What is Masters of Albion’s New Beginnings update?
Masters of Albion is a single-player god game and strategy simulation from 22cans. It entered Steam Early Access on April 22, 2026. New Beginnings, released October 1, is the first major update; the developer calls it version 2.0, following the previous public version 1.4. The Steam listing still labels the game Early Access.
This is more than a small content drop: 22cans says it has changed how the game renders, where the story starts, how production and Orders work, how progression is presented, and how players face threats at night. It is a meaningful attempt to reshape the core experience, though the game remains in development.
What changed in version 2.0?
A new opening outside Oakridge
The journey now begins outside Oakridge. The expanded prologue adds places to explore, choices, and lore about the Chosen One’s origins, giving the game a different introduction rather than simply sending returning players back into the old opening.

A redesigned Orders and production loop
Random Orders above the Dispatch have been replaced by structured job series connected to Order Givers’ stories. The redesigned Design Table makes production costs, potential profit, customer requirements, and alignment visible while creating products. Completing Orders unlocks part packs; higher-tier parts can also be earned through night rewards or found in the world.
The practical promise is a clearer link between making goods and fulfilling requests: players can see more of the economic trade-offs before committing. Whether that turns the town economy into a consistently engaging long-term system will depend on how it feels in play.

More directed night encounters
Night combat now involves corruption and encounters framed around briefings and explicit objectives. Depending on the encounter, that can mean defeating a set number of enemies, surviving for a limited time, or escorting worshippers. Some rounds are timed, and the update adds scoring and reward cards alongside other combat changes.
These objectives give nights more variety in structure than a single repeating defense task. The update’s design changes are clear; how much variety they create over repeated play is a question players will answer over time.

Card-based progression and world interaction
22cans describes progression as card-based and says the update adds more ways to interact with Albion and its people. Together with the reworked Orders and night rewards, that suggests a stronger effort to connect development, production, and defense. It is a promising direction for the fantasy of acting as a god in a living world, not proof that every system is already deep or balanced.
A rebuilt rendering system
The developer says it moved the game to a more efficient rendering system and rebuilt or converted every in-game asset. 22cans reports “up to double the frame rate” in its own tests, while warning that results vary with hardware, resolution, and graphics settings. Treat that as a developer-reported result, not a guaranteed improvement for your PC or an independent benchmark. The best evidence for your setup is how the current version runs on it.

Is the old god game magic back?
That is a judgment, not a measurable update feature. The case for renewed optimism is that New Beginnings changes several central systems at once: the rendering pipeline, early story, production and Orders, progression, and night encounters. Those are more substantial foundations for a fresh experience than a patch limited to stability fixes.
There is reason to keep expectations measured. In its coverage of the original release, PC Gamer characterized it as an “initial sketch” and pointed to the challenge of combining multiple genres. A broad update can make the design more coherent, but a new version number and a list of revisions cannot establish how well all those parts work together for every player.

Steam’s storefront snapshot checked October 3, 2026 showed 64% positive from 615 all-time reviews and 63% positive from 11 recent reviews. Those figures are time-sensitive, and the recent sample is small; they are context, not a stable verdict on the update. Ultimately, whether the game now clicks for you depends on your tolerance for Early Access and on how the revised systems perform and feel in your own sessions.
Should you return, or wait?
If you stopped playing because the first release felt rough or its systems did not connect, the scale of this update gives you a reasonable basis to reconsider it. The key questions are specific:
- Performance: Does version 2.0 run better on your hardware and preferred settings? The studio’s “up to double” figure is not a promise for every configuration.
- Systems depth: Do the new Orders, product-creation information, and card progression make goals feel more connected?
- Night variety: Do objectives such as timed survival and escorting worshippers make defense more interesting over repeated encounters?
- Restart cost: Are you willing to begin again rather than continue your existing save?
- Early Access: Are you comfortable with a game that may continue to change in content, systems, and balance?
If you are mainly curious about the new structure and do not mind starting over, version 2.0 is the relevant build to assess. If continuing an existing 1.4 campaign matters more, check Steam’s current branch options before switching: 22cans said the public 1.4 branch would remain available for one month after the update, so its availability should not be assumed now.
Do you have to restart your save?
Yes, to play version 2.0: version 1.4 saves cannot be loaded in New Beginnings. The developer’s October 1 announcement said the public 1.4 branch would remain available through Steam for one month for people continuing an existing save. That was a time-limited commitment, not a guarantee that the branch remains available on October 3, 2026; check the game’s Steam branch options before relying on it.
What to expect from an Early Access game
The game is not presented as complete. Valve’s Steam notice says, “Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further.” 22cans likewise said in its New Beginnings announcement: “The game remains in Early Access, and we will continue listening to your feedback and improving the game after this update.” That matters here: version 2.0 is a substantial reset and rework, not a declaration that development is over.
