To turn on mobile data on most Galaxy phones, open Settings > Connections > Data usage and switch on Mobile data. For a faster route, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick panel and tap the Mobile data icon. If you have two SIMs or an eSIM, also confirm which line is assigned to mobile data, because a lit toggle does not guarantee that the active SIM can reach the internet.
Turn on mobile data on a single-SIM Galaxy phone
Mobile data is the phone’s cellular internet connection, the one that works when Wi-Fi is off or unavailable. Samsung’s own description is direct: “Mobile data allows your Samsung Galaxy device to connect to the internet through your mobile network provider” (Samsung Gulf Support, “How to enable or disable mobile data on a Galaxy phone,” last updated 9 June 2026).

- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections. On some menu variants the entry is labelled Network & internet.
- Tap Data usage.
- Turn on Mobile data.
The Quick panel gives the same switch in one tap: swipe down from the top edge and tap Mobile data. Labels, icons and menu depth change with model and software version, so if you cannot find a label exactly as written, look for the same wording under a neighbouring menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the correct SIM on a dual-SIM phone
On a phone with two active lines, mobile data is assigned to one SIM at a time. Enabling the toggle without checking this assignment is the most common reason people end up on the wrong line, or on a line with no plan.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then SIM card manager.
- Tap Mobile data and select SIM 1 or SIM 2.
Set the SIM your carrier plan actually covers. If you use one line for work and one for personal data, keep the data assignment on the line with the plan you want to spend.
Activate an eSIM
Some Galaxy models support an eSIM alongside, or instead of, a physical card. Support differs by model and regional variant, so check your phone’s own manual before following these steps. In the Galaxy S23-series EU/UK English user manual, the route is Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM. When a plan is found, the manual says to “follow the on-screen instructions to activate the eSIM.” If your carrier supplied a QR code, choose Scan QR code instead.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

After activation, go back to SIM card manager > Mobile data and confirm that the eSIM, not the physical SIM, is the one selected for data if that is the line you intend to use.

Optional: let the phone switch to the other SIM for data
The S23-series manual describes an option to use the other SIM for data when the preferred SIM cannot connect. The manual warns that additional charges may apply. Leave this off unless you know which line will carry the traffic and what it costs, and treat its exact name and location as model-specific.

Roaming: a separate setting with its own cost
Data roaming lets the phone use a network that your provider does not own, most often when you are abroad. It is not needed for normal use at home. Samsung’s US support material warns that extra charges may apply, especially outside your country, and advises asking your carrier before you enable it.
| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| Usual path | Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Data Roaming Access |
| Carrier-specific steps | May differ from the usual path |
| Greyed-out switch | Samsung UK’s article (updated 5 June 2026) says you may need to turn on Mobile data first |
| Cost | Set by your plan and destination; no universal price is stated by Samsung |
Before travelling, check your carrier’s roaming terms and confirm that both your plan and your device are permitted to roam. Then enable Data roaming only for the trip.

When mobile data still does not work
Work through these checks in order and test the connection after each one. Start with the cheapest and most reversible steps; the network reset comes later because it removes saved settings.
- Confirm the basics. Check that the SIM is active, Mobile data is on, the plan is active, your daily or monthly allowance has not run out, signal is adequate, and the software is up to date. Samsung India’s troubleshooting article suggests temporarily turning Wi-Fi off while you test, so that you know the result reflects mobile data. Enable roaming only if you are actually roaming.
- Turn off Airplane mode and check coverage. Samsung US states that “Airplane mode turns off all network connections including calling, texting, mobile data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth” (Connection options for your Galaxy phone or tablet). If the phone is in Airplane mode, switch it off. If signal is weak, move to a more open location, away from thick walls or metal obstacles.
- Check the data SIM. On a dual-SIM or eSIM phone, go to Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Mobile data and confirm the intended line is selected.
- Restart the phone. A restart clears temporary network and SIM-recognition problems. Use the normal power menu where possible. If the phone is unresponsive, use the forced-restart combination for your model, which is listed in its manual.
- Set the network mode to automatic. Samsung India’s article describes choosing automatic connection across 5G, LTE, 3G and 2G. Only if the problem persists, reset Access Point Names to default in the mobile networks menu. Do not type carrier APN values from memory, because they are carrier-specific.
- Check SIM status if the phone does not recognise the card. Go to Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status. If the carrier name does not appear, reseat the physical card or test it in another compatible phone, then ask the carrier about a replacement. eSIM users should not remove any physical card for this check.
- Reset network settings last. The mobile network reset option removes saved mobile network configuration and reconnects with defaults. Samsung’s troubleshooting material also notes that a network reset clears Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other network settings, so you will need to re-enter saved Wi-Fi passwords and re-pair devices.
- Contact your carrier. If the device-side checks fail, ask the provider to confirm that the line and data plan are active, that allowance remains, that roaming is authorised if you are travelling, that the device or SIM is provisioned correctly, and that there is no local outage.
Know the limits of these instructions
Menu names, default SIM behaviour and eSIM support are not uniform across Galaxy models, software versions, carriers and regions. The Samsung Gulf toggle guide, the Samsung India troubleshooting article, the Samsung US connection and roaming pages, and the S23-series EU/UK manual each cover a different slice of this topic, so an option that appears in one may be absent from your phone. If your menu differs, use the manual that matches your exact model and region, or ask your carrier which options it has provisioned on your line.
