SketchUp has different measurement workflows for different jobs: use Tape Measure to check distances or create temporary guides, Protractor for angles, the Measurements box to enter exact values while drawing or transforming geometry, and dimension entities to show measurements on a model. LayOut dimensions work in page space as well as model space, so the right method depends on whether you need a quick readout, a modeling constraint, or a visible annotation.
Choose the right measurement tool
| What you need | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Check a distance or coordinates | Tape Measure | Reads distances and can show coordinates along an axis. |
| Check or lay out an angle | Protractor | Measures angles and creates angled guides. |
| Set a value while drawing or transforming | Measurements box | Applies typed values according to the active tool. |
| Show a measurement on the model | Dimension entity | Adds a visible annotation associated with model geometry. |
| Measure a page element or model in a presentation | LayOut dimension | Reports paper-space or model-space values depending on what is dimensioned. |
The Measurements box is available with almost all other tools, but its meaning changes with the active tool. SketchUp Help’s Precise Modeling with Measurements page was updated September 29, 2026.

Measure a distance and create temporary guides
Choose Tape Measure, select a start point and an end point, and read the result in the Measurements box. The tool can also report coordinates along an axis. Its default keyboard shortcut is T; if shortcuts have been customized, use the current assignment shown in your SketchUp setup. See SketchUp’s Default Keyboard Shortcuts page.

These are temporary layout aids, not regular geometry, and they do not interfere with the model’s geometry. Use them to establish alignments or reference points before drawing. The official tool overview describes the tool’s measurement and guide roles.

Enter exact values while drawing or editing
The Measurements box appears in the lower-right corner of the SketchUp interface. Start the relevant drawing or transformation tool, then type the value; do not click in the box first. The active tool determines whether the number specifies a shape dimension, movement, rotation, or scale. A unit suffix can specify the unit for that entry even when it differs from the model’s current display unit.
Documented examples include 10" for inches, 10' for feet, and 10mm, 10cm, or 10m for metric entries. These are examples, not an exhaustive list of accepted formats in every locale. SketchUp explains the box’s context-sensitive behavior in Using the Measurements Box.

Measure an angle
Use the Protractor tool when you need an angle measurement or an angled guide. The SketchUp tool overview identifies those purposes, but does not provide a detailed click-by-click procedure here; consult the help for your edition and version for the exact interaction.
Add dimensions that remain visible on the model
Use dimension entities when a measurement should appear as an annotation rather than only in the Measurements box. SketchUp supports dimensions for line length, circle diameter, and arc radius. You can place dimensions using inferred points such as endpoints, midpoints, points on an edge, intersections, and circle or arc centers.
Rank #3
Model dimensions can update when their associated geometry changes. If you manually replace the displayed dimension text, it loses that dynamic association and no longer updates with the geometry. SketchUp documents how to add and manage them in Adding Text, Labels, and Dimensions to a Model.
Understand model-space and LayOut dimensions
LayOut dimensions can measure page elements or geometry inside a SketchUp model entity. A dimension on paper-space geometry reports its size on the page; a dimension inside a SketchUp model entity reports the model measurement. If a dimension crosses both spaces, LayOut displays the paper-space measurement. Object snapping, enabled by default according to the LayOut dimension guide, can affect what the dimension attaches to, so check the snapped entities when a value is unexpected.

Resize a model to a known measurement
To resize the entire model against a known reference, measure a reference edge with Tape Measure, enter the intended new length in the Measurements box, and confirm SketchUp’s prompt to resize the model. This changes the model to match a real target length rather than applying a percentage. The workflow is distinct from using the Scale tool to scale selected geometry or enter a percentage. See Scaling Your Model or Parts of Your Model for the documented distinction.
