Yes—if you want a character-driven space opera where decisions carry across three games. Mass Effect Legendary Edition brings the original trilogy and more than 40 DLC packs together, with visual and control improvements that make the first game easier to approach. It does not modernize the trilogy’s combat or mission pacing throughout: the first Mass Effect still feels dated, and its combat remains relatively limited in depth.
What Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes
Electronic Arts describes the collection as the single-player base content from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, plus over 40 DLC packs. Those packs include story expansions, weapons, armor and promotional content. The collection is remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD, according to EA’s product page.

The trilogy’s connective tissue is a major part of the package: choices made in one game can carry forward and affect later missions, relationships, battles and the fate of the galaxy. That makes the collection more than three separate campaigns bundled together, though the effects and experience depend on the decisions a player makes.
How well does the story hold up?
The strongest reason to play is the long-form story: a galaxy-scale conflict unfolds across three games, with recurring characters and decisions that give the journey continuity. EA highlights that choices travel between games; whether that kind of investment is rewarding depends on how much you enjoy shaping a protagonist’s relationships and moral decisions over a lengthy series.
#1 Best Overall
- One person is all that stands between humanity and the greatest threat it’s ever faced.
- Relive the legend of Commander Shepard in the highly acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
- Includes single-player base content and over 40 DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, including promo weapons, armors, and packs - remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD.
MeriStation’s 2021 review praised the characters, moral choices, conflicts and cinematic presentation, awarding the collection 8.5/10. That score and assessment are the reviewer’s judgment, not a universal measure, but they point to the trilogy’s enduring appeal for players who prioritize narrative and companions.
What changed in the remaster—and what still feels old?
EA’s 2021 announcement lists updated character models and textures, visual and lighting improvements, interface updates and quality-of-life changes. For the first game, it also cites changes to aiming, squad controls and behavior, Mako handling and cameras. These improvements smooth the presentation and some interactions; they do not turn the trilogy into a contemporary action game. See EA’s launch announcement and its gameplay-calibration notes.

The first game is the main adjustment
MeriStation’s reviewer noted conspicuous rough edges in the first entry and described its combat as limited in depth. Expect a different feel from later action-oriented RPGs: the remaster improves handling and presentation, but some sections and systems remain products of an older design era.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLater games do not erase the trilogy’s unevenness
The package spans three releases rather than one uniformly designed game. If dated combat or slower mission pacing is a deal-breaker, the remaster’s visual polish alone may not be enough. If you can accept that trade-off for the characters and connected story, the rougher moments are easier to weigh against the whole arc.

How much time should you set aside?
There is no guaranteed completion time: optional content and play style change the total substantially. Mac Walters, project director of Legendary Edition and lead writer of the original trilogy at BioWare, described the collection as having over 100 hours of gameplay in EA’s 2021 announcement. MeriStation’s reviewer estimated more than 140 hours for someone seeking to experience all the content. Treat these as attributed estimates, not a promise for every playthrough.

Who should play it today?
- Good fit: You want a substantial science-fiction RPG centered on companion characters, consequential decisions and a story that continues across multiple games.
- Consider carefully: You enjoy narrative RPGs but have limited time, or you are unsure how much older combat and mission design will bother you. Optional content can make the commitment extensive.
- Probably not a fit: You want consistently modern combat, tightly paced missions or a short, self-contained campaign.
Verdict
Mass Effect Legendary Edition remains worth playing for the trilogy’s connected story and characters, especially if you have not played it before. Its bundled content and remaster improvements make it a convenient way to experience the series, but the improved controls and presentation do not remove the dated feel of the first game or make combat uniformly modern. Decide based on whether the story is worth that gameplay compromise for you, and check your regional store for current price and availability.
