To create Shepard in the original Mass Effect 3, start a new game, choose Male or Female, then select Role-Playing or Story mode to reach character creation. Action mode skips those screens. You can customize Shepard’s appearance and background, but the documented creator does not offer a separate voice selector: the official credits associate Mark Meer with male Shepard and Jennifer Hale with female Shepard.
How to create and customize Shepard in Mass Effect 3
- Start a new game or import a career. From New Game, select Male or Female to create a Shepard. Choose Import ME2 Character to continue a completed Mass Effect 2 career; the manual says the character’s level and story-impacting decisions carry forward. Import ME3 Character becomes available after completing Mass Effect 3. EA’s PC manual documents these options.
- Choose an experience mode. Select Role-Playing or Story to enter the creation screens. Action mode bypasses them and proceeds into the game. The manual says combat difficulty and conversation mode can be changed in Options after starting.
- Set Shepard’s identity and background. The original-game manual lists first name, appearance, military class, personal history, service history, and combat losses as creation choices.
- Review and confirm. At Review, confirm your selections. Until confirmation, you can return to earlier screens and revise them.
The manual names Appearance as a category but does not enumerate specific sliders, hairstyles, facial features, or presets. The exact cosmetic controls available may depend on the edition and platform, so check the creator in your version rather than assuming a particular facial-editing option.

Can you choose Shepard’s voice separately?
The documented creator asks you to choose Male or Female; it does not describe an independent voice picker. BioWare identifies Mark Meer as the voice of male Shepard, while EA’s manual credits Jennifer Hale for Commander Shepard (Female) and Mark Meer for Commander Shepard (Male). In the documented flow, voice performance is linked to the gender choice rather than offered as a separate setting. BioWare’s FemShep article and the official manual credits identify the performers.

What changes in Mass Effect Legendary Edition?
Do not assume the original 2012 creator and Legendary Edition have identical appearance options. EA says the remaster unified Shepard customization across the trilogy and added options including skin tones and hairstyles. EA’s team described the update this way: “For example, we’ve unified Shepard’s customization options in the character creator and even added some new options, like additional skin tones and hairstyles.” The creator code can be used across all three games for a consistent appearance, or you can change Shepard’s appearance at the start of each game.
In Legendary Edition, the Mass Effect 3 FemShep design is the default female option throughout the trilogy; the original FemShep design remains available as a preset. These are remaster-specific changes, not descriptions of the original release. EA’s Legendary Edition gameplay-calibration article explains the changes.
