Marvel’s Wolverine has six Special Techniques, but you can equip only four at a time. There is no official best-to-worst ranking: the right choices depend on whether you need crowd coverage, interruption, healing, defense breaking, or a way to engage an opponent. Here’s what each Technique does and how to choose a loadout from its documented role.
All six Special Techniques at a glance
| Technique | Documented function | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| Tornado Spin | Deals high damage with multiple hits against surrounding enemies and builds Rage. Upgrades increase damage, break blocks, and interrupt attacks. | Crowds and nearby attackers |
| Knee Breaker | Strikes an enemy’s head to stagger them and interrupt attacks. Upgrades increase stagger damage, speed recharge, and can add area stagger. | Stopping an attacker or building stagger |
| Relentless | Focuses the healing factor to recover Health faster for a limited time. Upgrades can shrug off basic attacks, extend the duration, and grant a near-death healing burst. | Survivability during a difficult stretch |
| Spiral Strike | Drills through foes with a high-damage attack and can break through enemies when surrounded. Upgrades allow up to three rapid uses. | Punching through a group |
| Overwhelm | Charges forward, tackles an opponent, and mounts them. Upgrades can knock other enemies back, chain after a Barrage kill, and recharge faster. | Aggressive forward engagement |
| Brutal Assault | Dashes toward a target and delivers a combo that breaks through enemy defenses. Upgrades add strikes and can build Rage with kills. | Attacking a defended target |
These functions and upgrade descriptions are from PlayStation’s Marvel’s Wolverine combat guide. The guide does not provide comparative damage tests or rank the Techniques.

Which Techniques should you equip?
Treat “best” as a question of what problem you want your four-slot loadout to solve. The suggestions below are practical inferences from the moves’ official descriptions, not measured rankings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When you need crowd coverage
Tornado Spin is the clearest crowd-oriented pick: its description specifically calls out multiple hits against surrounding enemies. Spiral Strike is another option when you are surrounded and need to drill through foes. Choose between them based on whether you want a surrounding multi-hit attack or a move described as breaking through a group.

When you need to interrupt an attacker
Knee Breaker is the direct choice for staggering an enemy and interrupting attacks. Its stagger-focused upgrades reinforce that role, including an area-stagger option.
When survival is the priority
Relentless is the healing option. It temporarily speeds Health recovery, and its upgrades add defensive or emergency-healing effects. It is a reasonable slot to consider when you value sustain over another attack.

When you want to challenge defenses or close distance
Brutal Assault is described as breaking through enemy defenses, making it the functional choice to consider against a defended target. Overwhelm instead gives you a forward charge, tackle, and mount. PlayStation’s descriptions establish these different roles, but do not establish that either is stronger against a particular boss or enemy.
Build around the challenge, not a universal ranking
With four slots for six Techniques, you have to leave two unequipped. A practical starting point is to cover the need you most often encounter, then use the remaining slots for complementary roles—for example, a crowd option, an interruption option, a defensive option, and a move for the kind of engagement you prefer. Change the mix when a different function would be more useful; the official guide does not identify a universally optimal four-move set.

Equipping, unlocking, and upgrading Techniques
PlayStation’s combat guide says you can equip up to four Techniques. Unlocks come through a mix of story progress and level requirements, but the guide does not give a complete unlock-level table. You can spend Technique Points to upgrade their effects.
For controls, Insomniac’s accessibility features page lists a Special Techniques Mode that switches between Hold and Toggle, as well as the ability to assign shortcuts for every Technique slot. Look for the mode in the game’s settings if holding the input is not your preference. The page was updated June 2, 2026.

A note about Bull Rush and pre-release footage
PlayStation’s June 2, 2026 gameplay and story announcement mentioned Bull Rush alongside Tornado Spin in a pre-release description. The current combat guide lists six Techniques and does not include Bull Rush. The available official information does not establish whether Bull Rush was renamed, removed, or otherwise changed, so it should not be counted as a seventh listed Technique.
Platform and release
PlayStation’s game guide describes Marvel’s Wolverine as available exclusively on PS5. PlayStation announced a September 15, 2026 release in its June 2, 2026 State of Play post.
