Play in this order: Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, then Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, then Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The official PlayStation series guide places Miles Morales one year after the first game and Spider-Man 2 about nine months after it. If you want both of the first two games in one PS5 purchase, compare the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition; if you want only Peter Parker’s first adventure, choose Remastered.

That sequence follows PlayStation’s own series guide. It is also the order that makes character introductions, relationship changes and references land naturally. “Remastered” is the PS5 version of the first game, not a separate story that should be placed after Miles Morales.

The Ultimate and Standard names refer to the PlayStation Store edition descriptions. Availability, packaging and prices can change by country and over time, so use your local PlayStation Store page or the exact retailer listing at checkout rather than relying on an old screenshot or launch article.

Why the order matters
Remastered establishes Peter’s timeline
PlayStation describes the original Marvel’s Spider-Man as the first game in the series and centers it on Peter Parker. The PS5 Remastered release contains that complete game, so it supplies the events and context that the later games assume. Starting here also lets you meet the supporting cast before the series shifts attention toward Miles.
Miles Morales is a continuation, not a replacement
PlayStation’s guide says the story continues a year later in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Miles has his own lead role and a self-contained adventure, but the game follows the world established by Peter’s campaign. Playing the first game beforehand means you will recognize the people, places and consequences that return in Miles’s story.
Spider-Man 2 is the third step
The same guide places Spider-Man 2 about nine months after Miles Morales and describes Peter and Miles reuniting. It is therefore the payoff to both earlier games rather than the ideal introduction to either hero. You can launch it first from a purely technical standpoint, but doing so discards the intended progression and may reveal later developments before their setup.

What is included with The City That Never Sleeps?
The PS5 Remastered package includes all three chapters of The City That Never Sleeps. PlayStation’s series guide also identifies the PS4 Game of the Year Edition as including that expansion. The Ultimate Edition’s store description calls out the complete remastered game and its three chapters as part of the bundle’s first-game component.
This matters when comparing a standalone copy of the first game with the bundle. You do not need to buy the three expansion chapters separately when your listing explicitly says it is Remastered with The City That Never Sleeps included. Read the product description for your region, especially if a retailer uses a shortened title or sells a used physical copy with a different package.
Choose by your starting situation
You own no game in the series
Compare the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition first. The US PlayStation Store listing states that it includes both Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for PS5. That gives you the first two chapters in the recommended order. Check whether the listing is a digital entitlement, a disc package or another format in your market, and verify that both games are listed before completing the purchase.

You want Peter’s first adventure only
Choose Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. It is the direct entry point and includes the three City That Never Sleeps chapters. Buying Spider-Man 2 first because it is the newest numbered release changes the narrative order and does not provide the earlier campaign.

The Miles Morales Standard Edition is the focused choice if your goal is Miles’s story. Before purchasing, check exactly which version you own and whether your account already has a PS5 entitlement. A PS4 copy, a PS5 copy and a bundle entitlement can have different upgrade rules; the store page for your territory is authoritative.
You only want Miles’s game
Use the Standard Edition listing rather than paying for a bundle you will not use. It is still a complete Miles Morales story, but it is not the same product as the Ultimate Edition, which adds the PS5 Remastered game.

You are ready for the latest game
Buy or play Spider-Man 2 after finishing Remastered and Miles Morales if story continuity matters to you. If you have already completed those games on another platform, there is no narrative reason to replay them solely because you now use a PS5; replaying is a preference, not a requirement.
PS4 discs, PS5 upgrades and the Digital Edition caveat
The US PlayStation Store listing gives a specific condition for PS4 disc owners who download or play the PS5 digital version: the PS4 disc must be inserted whenever the game is downloaded or played. A disc-free PS5 Digital Edition cannot use that disc-based route because it has no drive in which to verify the disc.
That rule applies to the stated PS4-disc situation, not every possible ownership or upgrade path. Digital purchases, regional editions, account entitlements and physical packages can have different terms. Before buying an upgrade or assuming a disc will work, check the exact edition shown in your local store. Keep the original disc if your entitlement depends on it; disposing of it can remove the verification method required to launch the PS5 version.

- PS5 console with a disc drive: a qualifying PS4 disc may need to remain inserted for access to the PS5 digital version.
- PS5 Digital Edition: it cannot use a PS4 disc-based upgrade route because it cannot read the disc.
- Digital ownership: sign in to the account that purchased the game and confirm the PS5 version shown in your library or store page.
- Different country or edition: do not assume the US listing’s terms apply unchanged; consult your local PlayStation Store.
Do you have to play every game before Spider-Man 2?
No technical requirement forces you to complete the earlier games. The useful distinction is between “can start” and “best first experience.” Spider-Man 2 is playable as its own PS5 release, but the official chronology places it after both earlier titles. New players who care about the story should follow the three-game order. Players who primarily want the newest gameplay can begin with Spider-Man 2, accepting that character history and earlier events will be presented out of sequence.
If time is limited, do not assume that Miles Morales is an optional replacement for the first game. It is shorter in scope than a full numbered sequel in how it is positioned, but it still occupies a specific point in the timeline. The most coherent shortcut is to play the first game, then continue to Spider-Man 2 and return to Miles later only if you are comfortable with the chronology being out of order.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify your console. Confirm whether your PS5 has a disc drive or is the Digital Edition.
- Check your existing library. Look for Remastered, Miles Morales and any PS5 entitlement before purchasing.
- Decide whether you need both opening games. If yes, compare the Ultimate Edition; if no, choose the individual game that matches your starting point.
- Read the included-content line. The Ultimate listing should name both games. The Remastered description should identify the complete game and the three City That Never Sleeps chapters.
- Verify format and region. Digital, physical and PS4-disc upgrade terms can differ, and local prices are not established by historical launch material.
- Keep qualifying discs. If your access depends on a PS4 disc, you will need to insert it whenever the store’s terms require verification.
- Play in narrative order. Start Remastered, continue with Miles Morales, and then launch Spider-Man 2.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking “Ultimate” for a deluxe version of only Miles
In the US store description, Ultimate means the bundle contains Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. It is not merely a cosmetic upgrade to Miles’s game. Confirm both titles in the listing when shopping in another region.
Buying Standard when you still need Peter’s game
The Standard Edition is appropriate when you already own the first game or only want Miles’s story. If you are new and want to follow the complete opening arc, compare its contents with Ultimate before checking out.
Assuming old launch prices still apply
PlayStation’s September 30, 2020 launch article described the original Standard, Ultimate and upgrade routes, including prices and a voucher expiry date. Those figures and terms are historical. They are not a current price list, and they should not be used to estimate what a store charges now.
Discarding a PS4 disc after an upgrade
For the disc-based route described by the store, the disc remains the ownership check. Keep it and insert it when required, or choose a purchase path that does not depend on disc verification.
