A 2026 study found that including this process—called homogeneous nucleation—in a Mars weather model helped reproduce important features of the cloud. That is a proposed explanation supported by modeling, not a direct observation of ice forming in the Martian atmosphere.
What is the strange cloud on Mars?
The Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud, or AMEC, is a white water-ice cloud that forms downwind of Arsia Mons, a 20-kilometer-tall volcano, during spring and summer in Mars’s southern hemisphere. The European Space Agency (ESA) says it can extend up to 1,800 kilometers and develops and fades in a daily cycle over several months. ESA describes the cloud and the study.

AMEC is an orographic cloud: its shape and formation are influenced by winds interacting with a mountain or volcano. Its striking length and recurring appearance made it a challenge for models of Martian weather to reproduce.

It does not mean quantum mechanics, relativity, or a newly discovered force. In this context, “exotic physics” means an unexpected process in cloud microphysics: homogeneous nucleation. The process is known in physics, but the study’s authors say it is usually treated as theoretical and had not been seen in action in a planetary atmosphere.

Conventional cloud formation
In the more familiar process, called heterogeneous nucleation, water vapor condenses onto an existing particle that helps ice form. On Earth, such particles can include dust, soot, salt, or pollen. That particle provides a starting surface for the change from vapor to ice.
The proposed process for AMEC
With homogeneous nucleation, water vapor forms ice particles directly, without a pre-existing nucleus. ESA says this requires exceptionally high relative humidity—over 100,000 times levels usually experienced in daily life on Earth. That figure describes the extreme conditions required in the modeled explanation; it is not a direct measurement of humidity inside the cloud.

How could Arsia Mons help the cloud form?
In the study’s modeled explanation, winds interacting with Arsia Mons rapidly lift moist air. As the air rises, it cools, pushing conditions toward the very high relative humidity needed for homogeneous nucleation. ESA reports that the model’s uplift produces a temperature drop of 30 degrees in 10 minutes.
The proposed sequence is therefore: winds lift moist air near the volcano, the rising air cools sharply, and water vapor forms ice particles directly. The cloud is then carried downwind, where it can stretch into its elongated form. The temperature change is a figure reported by ESA for the modeled process, not a measurement of an individual parcel of air in the cloud.

What did the study establish—and what remains uncertain?
The study, titled “Homogeneous ice Nucleation from Water Vapour Suggested by Elongated Clouds on Mars,” was published in Nature Geoscience, according to ESA’s 7 October 2026 announcement. Its authors report that adding homogeneous nucleation to a Mars meteorological model allowed it to reproduce important, distinctive characteristics of AMEC. ESA’s announcement summarizes the result.
The accessible preprint record, submitted on 29 September 2026, describes the same modeling result and notes that the preprint had not undergone peer review at the time represented by that record. That status applies to the preprint; it does not override ESA’s statement that the paper was published in Nature Geoscience. The arXiv preprint record gives its abstract and submission status.

Crucially, the evidence described in these sources is a model that fits observed cloud features—not direct sampling of the cloud’s ice particles or an in-situ observation of nucleation. ESA also notes that the simulation does not match every aspect of the observations exactly. The result makes homogeneous nucleation a plausible explanation for AMEC, but it is not proof that the process has been directly witnessed on Mars.

If the explanation holds up, AMEC would be an example of a cloud shaped by a process that models and expectations had not accounted for in this setting. It also shows why matching a visible cloud’s outline is not always enough: the microphysics that creates its ice can matter. ESA Mars Express Project Scientist Colin Wilson said, “While clouds on Earth and Mars seem to be governed by the same ‘rules’, understanding this exotic martian cloud required exotic physics – and this may be true elsewhere in the cosmos,” in ESA’s announcement.
