These approaches complement each other. A drill gathers material, while instruments and observations establish what it contains and where it came from. Curiosity analyzes powdered samples aboard the rover. Perseverance drills and seals rock cores for potential return; those cached samples have not been returned to Earth.
What a Mars rover drill can—and cannot—tell us
A drill is a sampling tool, not an instrument that identifies a rock on its own. It reaches selected material so the rover can examine it with onboard instruments and interpret the results alongside images and observations of the surrounding geology.

The missions handle drilled material differently. Curiosity delivers powder to its onboard laboratory. Perseverance’s rotary-percussive drill collects rock cores and seals them in tubes for possible retrieval and return. NASA describes the latter as part of a planned sample-return campaign, not a completed delivery to Earth. NASA’s Perseverance rover components overview and its Mars Sample Return science overview describe these roles.
Onboard instruments can identify minerals and study chemistry
Curiosity’s CheMin uses X-ray diffraction to distinguish mineral phases. NASA gives gypsum, which contains water, and anhydrite, which does not, as an example of minerals it can tell apart. CheMin’s analysis of mudstone at Yellowknife Bay, considered with other rover observations, helped support the interpretation that an ancient freshwater lake existed there. NASA explains how CheMin works.

Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, or SAM, studies sample chemistry, including gases released when material is heated and products of wet-chemistry experiments. Together, CheMin and SAM show that a rover can do meaningful mineralogical and chemical analysis in situ—not merely drill, photograph, and send data home.
A recent example: Curiosity’s Campo Marte sample
In a May 2026 mission update, Curiosity deputy project scientist Abigail Fraeman described the team’s work with a Campo Marte drill sample: the rover tested delivery of powder, sent a portion to CheMin, and used early results to plan SAM analyses. The drill reached 28 millimeters at this particular target, and the delivered portion was no more than tens of milligrams. Those figures describe this dated operation, not a universal drill depth or sample size. NASA’s Campo Marte update provides the operational details.

What Earth-based analysis could add
Instruments sent to Mars must fit within a spacecraft’s limits for size, mass, and power, and survive launch, transit, landing, and the Martian surface. Earth laboratories do not face the same flight constraints. NASA says terrestrial facilities can use complex equipment too large or bulky to send to Mars and can analyze returned material across multiple facilities and over time. NASA’s overview of bringing Mars science to Earth explains this intended advantage.
Return would also preserve the option to revisit samples as analytical methods improve. A rover’s instrument suite is fixed when the spacecraft is built; returned material could be studied by different researchers and generations of researchers with methods chosen for the questions that emerge. Earth analysis would still depend on the rover’s records of each sample’s location and geological setting: more powerful laboratory tools do not replace context.

The comparison is therefore not a simple contest in which one side makes the other obsolete. Rover measurements connect a sample to its surroundings and provide timely evidence while exploration continues. Earth laboratories could then apply additional methods to selected material. NASA frames life detection as a scientific objective, not a guaranteed result, and greater analytical capability alone cannot promise a definitive answer about past life.
Organic molecules are evidence, not proof of life
On April 21, 2026, NASA reported that SAM analysis of Curiosity’s Mary Anning 3 sample identified 21 carbon-containing molecules, seven of them detected for the first time on Mars. NASA said the molecules could have biological or geological origins, so the finding does not establish that life existed on Mars. NASA’s report on the discovery gives both the result and its limitation.

That distinction applies to both rover and laboratory results: detecting a compound describes what is in the material; determining how it formed requires further interpretation and evidence. Returned samples could allow additional tests, but an expanded toolkit would not automatically settle the question.

Perseverance’s sealed cores are intended for possible future retrieval and study on Earth; they are not already available to Earth laboratories. NASA’s January 7, 2025 announcement said the agency would study two landing approaches during program formulation and expected to confirm a path in the second half of 2026. That dated announcement does not establish the eventual decision or a current return date. NASA’s 2025 announcement records what was planned at that time.
