For most new, conventional web applications on a self-managed VPS, choose a currently supported MariaDB LTS when you want broad MySQL protocol compatibility, more included storage-engine options and lower support overhead. Choose MySQL when your application vendor, hosting image, team or operational tools require MySQL-specific behavior, MySQL 8-era JSON semantics, or Oracle-backed support.
That recommendation is not a claim that MariaDB is universally faster or that switching is risk-free. MariaDB and MySQL still share clients and wire protocols, but their SQL behavior, engines, release policies and administration features have diverged. Pin a supported major version, test your exact workload and keep a rollback path before changing a production VPS.

The short answer
| Situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Typical WordPress, PHP or custom web application on a new VPS | Supported MariaDB LTS | High compatibility with common MySQL clients and applications, plus a broad set of included engines and generally lower licensing and support complexity. |
| Vendor certifies only MySQL or requires MySQL-specific behavior | MySQL | Certification, exact SQL semantics and vendor support are more important than a generic compatibility claim. |
| Heavy use of MySQL 8-era JSON behavior, operators or generated-column features | MySQL | MariaDB’s compatibility is substantial but not identical; JSON implementation and edge-case behavior can differ. |
| Distributed analytics or a specialized storage-engine requirement | MariaDB may fit better | MariaDB documents ColumnStore, MyRocks and an S3 storage engine among its available choices in its 10.5 comparison. |
| Lowest possible memory footprint or highest throughput on an inexpensive VPS | Whichever wins your test | No independently controlled, same-version benchmark establishes a universal winner. |
If you cannot identify a MySQL-only requirement, a supported MariaDB LTS is a reasonable default. If changing engines would invalidate a vendor support contract, preserve the certified MySQL deployment instead.

What has changed between MariaDB and MySQL
MariaDB began as a MySQL-compatible fork, and that heritage still matters. Existing MySQL client libraries, common connection strings and much conventional SQL continue to work. MariaDB says that “MariaDB Server still retains high levels of compatibility with MySQL, and most popular applications that use MySQL will work seamlessly with MariaDB.”
However, the projects no longer promise complete interchangeability. MariaDB no longer describes the server as a universal “drop-in replacement,” and Oracle’s migration guidance states that “MariaDB can no longer deliver drop-in compatibility.” Newer releases have introduced different SQL defaults, data types, authentication options, optimizer behavior, replication details and storage engines. Treat compatibility as something to verify against your application, not as a guarantee supplied by the product names.
Protocol and clients
Most PHP, Python, Ruby, Java and command-line clients that speak the MySQL protocol can connect to either server. A working connection proves only that the handshake and basic queries succeed. It does not prove that prepared statements, transaction isolation, authentication plugins, JSON expressions, replication or migrations behave identically.
Recommended Free Tools
SQL modes, collations and defaults
SQL mode changes can turn previously accepted data into errors or alter date, grouping and division behavior. Collation and character-set defaults affect sorting, uniqueness and index comparisons. Record the source server’s global and session settings, then compare them on the target before importing data. Pay particular attention to applications that depend on case sensitivity, accent handling, zero dates or implicit type conversion.
JSON and generated data
MySQL and MariaDB both offer JSON functionality, but the implementation and edge-case semantics are not interchangeable. Applications using JSON path operators, generated columns, functional indexes, validation behavior or optimizer treatment of JSON expressions should be tested with real queries and representative documents. A schema that merely contains a column declared as JSON is not enough evidence of compatibility.
Authentication and connection security
Authentication plugins, TLS defaults and account syntax can differ by release. Inventory every account used by the application, backup jobs, monitoring agents and replication channels. Test the exact driver version and authentication method from the application host; a successful local command-line login does not prove that a remote connection will work.

Replication, GTIDs and high availability
Replication topology, global transaction identifiers, failover tooling and backup metadata are engine-specific operational contracts. Do not assume that a replica can be changed from MySQL to MariaDB (or the reverse) by pointing it at the existing binary log. Plan a logical or physical migration supported by the target release, and rehearse promotion and rollback independently.
Choose by workload and required features
When MariaDB is the practical fit
- You run a conventional web stack and want a familiar MySQL-compatible protocol without a MySQL-only vendor dependency.
- Your workload is read-intensive or has many concurrent connections; MariaDB positions itself for these patterns, but you should validate the claim on your own data.
- You need storage-engine choice beyond the default transactional engine. MariaDB’s documented comparison includes ColumnStore for distributed analytics, MyRocks for compression-oriented workloads and an S3 storage engine.
- You prefer a community, enterprise or extended-LTS distribution that matches your operating system and support budget.
Those are selection criteria, not performance guarantees. Specialized engines can introduce their own operational, SQL and backup constraints, so select one only when its data model and tooling are a good fit.
When MySQL is the safer fit
- Your software vendor explicitly certifies MySQL and does not list MariaDB as supported.
- Your application depends on MySQL 8-era JSON behavior, syntax, optimizer details or authentication plugins.
- Your organization already operates MySQL monitoring, backup, replication and incident-response tooling and changing engines would create more risk than benefit.
- Oracle’s commercial support, ecosystem or contractual response requirements are part of the decision.
MySQL’s ecosystem is not merely a collection of client libraries. It includes vendor-certified integrations, training, support arrangements and operational products whose assumptions may be tied to a particular MySQL major version.
Storage-engine comparison
| Capability | MariaDB evidence | MySQL decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Default transactional web workload | Supported and broadly compatible with common applications. | Also a natural fit; choose based on certification, lifecycle and team familiarity. |
| ColumnStore | Documented by MariaDB as an available engine for distributed analytics. | Verify whether your MySQL architecture already supplies the analytics layer you need. |
| MyRocks | Documented by MariaDB for compression-oriented workloads. | Do not assume equivalent behavior or tooling across products. |
| S3 engine | Documented by MariaDB among its engine options. | Check application support, durability expectations and backup procedures before using it. |
Is one faster on a low-memory VPS?
There is no defensible universal answer from the available evidence. Vendor comparison pages make directional claims, but no independently controlled, same-version benchmark on identical VPS hardware establishes that MariaDB or MySQL is always faster, uses less memory or handles more connections.
On a small VPS, workload shape usually matters more than the brand name. A poorly indexed query, an oversized connection pool or a cache competing with PHP workers can exhaust memory regardless of engine. Conversely, a well-indexed read-heavy application may perform acceptably on either server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Measure these signals
- Memory pressure: resident database memory, swap activity and the operating system’s out-of-memory events during peak traffic.
- Cache efficiency: buffer-pool or page-cache hit rate and the amount of disk I/O generated by representative requests.
- Concurrency: active connections, connection wait time, thread utilization and queue depth.
- Query behavior: latency percentiles for the application’s slowest and most frequent queries, not only an average.
- Replication: replica lag and recovery time if you use replicas.
- Operations: logical and physical backup duration, restore duration and disk space consumed by temporary files.
A practical VPS test
- Clone production data into a staging VPS with the same CPU, memory, storage class and operating-system family as production.
- Pin one supported MariaDB or MySQL major version and record configuration, SQL modes, collations and connection limits.
- Replay a representative request mix or application load, including cache-warm and cache-cold periods.
- Capture p95 and p99 latency, throughput, memory pressure, I/O, active connections, slow queries and backup time.
- Repeat with the other engine using equivalent settings and the same dataset. Change one variable at a time.
- Keep the result with the deployment record; a benchmark from different versions or hardware cannot be generalized to your VPS.
Support and release lifecycle in 2026
Lifecycle is more important than the MariaDB or MySQL label. Select a branch that your application supports and that your distribution will receive security maintenance for, then document its end-of-life date.

| MariaDB publishes community, enterprise and extended-LTS binaries and describes a yearly LTS model alongside rolling releases. | You can choose a slower-moving LTS for production, but you still must track the project’s published lifecycle and your provider’s image maintenance. |
| MariaDB Server 10.6 reached end of life on July 6, 2026. | A 10.6 image is not a forward-looking choice for a new deployment unless you have a documented, supported exception and an upgrade plan. |
| MariaDB identified Server 12.3 as its latest LTS in the 2026 end-of-life announcement. | Confirm that your application, Linux distribution and VPS image support 12.3 before selecting it. |
| MySQL 26.7.0, released in July 2026, is the first valid calendar-versioned MySQL release. | Version numbers now need careful interpretation; do not assume that a familiar major-number pattern describes the same compatibility window as older releases. |
| MySQL warns that behavior changes can affect SQL syntax, reserved words, query execution and performance. | Test upgrades for parser, optimizer and application regressions rather than treating them as maintenance-only changes. |
Package repositories and managed VPS images can lag upstream releases or apply their own security-support policy. Check the exact image version, repository source and maintenance end date before provisioning. A package name such as “mysql-server” or “mariadb-server” does not by itself establish how long that build will receive fixes.
Compatibility checklist before switching
Use this inventory before changing an existing VPS. It is deliberately broader than a simple export-and-import because most failed migrations are caused by assumptions outside the table data.
- Application framework and ORM version, including the exact database driver.
- SQL mode, default character set, default collation and time-zone settings.
- JSON operators, generated columns, functional indexes and full-text features.
- Stored procedures, triggers, events, views and routines that use engine-specific syntax.
- Authentication plugins, TLS requirements, database users and host-based grants.
- Replication topology, GTID settings, binlog format, failover scripts and monitoring checks.
- Backup format, restore tooling, encryption keys and the time required to recover.
- Connection-pool size, transaction isolation and any application retry logic.
- ORM migrations that may emit vendor-specific DDL.
- Extensions or plugins loaded by the current server.
How to migrate safely on a VPS
1. Freeze the decision and define rollback
Choose a target major version that is supported by both the application and the VPS operating system. Write down the current engine, version, configuration files, data directory location, users, grants, scheduled jobs and firewall rules. Decide how you will return to the original server if validation fails; a rollback that exists only in theory is not a rollback plan.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match2. Take and verify a backup
Create a backup using tooling supported by the source engine, store it outside the VPS and test restoring it to an isolated instance. Check row counts, representative checksums and application-critical tables. A backup file that has never been restored is an unverified assumption.
3. Build a staging target
Provision a separate VPS or isolated instance with the target engine and the same major version you intend to run in production. Reproduce users, TLS, firewall rules, scheduled jobs and connection limits. Import a current copy of the data and record warnings rather than ignoring them.
4. Run application and schema tests
Exercise login, writes, reads, background jobs, uploads, search, reporting and administrative screens. Test every migration, trigger, procedure and scheduled event. Compare JSON results, ordering, null handling, timestamps and error messages where the application depends on them.

5. Compare operational behavior
Run the workload test described earlier. Measure memory, latency, I/O, connection behavior, backup and restore time. Include a restart and a simulated disk-full or connection-limit incident so that recovery procedures are tested, not merely documented.

Lower DNS or proxy TTLs ahead of the maintenance window if your architecture uses them. Stop writes, take a final consistent backup or synchronize the approved change set, import it into the target and switch the application connection settings. Keep the old VPS intact and isolated until validation is complete.
7. Validate before deleting anything
Check application logs, error rates, slow queries, scheduled jobs, backups, monitoring alerts and replication status. Confirm that all expected rows and users exist. Do not destroy the source server until the agreed observation period has passed and a tested restore from the new engine is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.WordPress and PHP applications
Most mainstream WordPress and PHP applications use the MySQL protocol and will connect to MariaDB, which is why a basic page load often succeeds after a switch. That initial success does not validate every plugin, migration or reporting query.
- Confirm the application’s documented database versions and the hosting image’s PHP driver.
- Test plugin and theme upgrades, scheduled tasks, search, checkout or payment flows and any reporting dashboard.
- Inspect queries that use JSON, custom collations, full-text search or vendor-specific SQL.
- Check that the PHP process can authenticate remotely with the selected plugin and TLS settings.
- Re-run database repair, backup and restore procedures using the target engine.
If a vendor support policy names MySQL specifically, obtain written confirmation before moving to MariaDB. Compatibility at the protocol level does not override a contractual certification requirement.
Common failure modes and fixes
The application connects but returns SQL errors
Compare SQL modes, reserved words, collations and JSON expressions. Capture the exact failing query and test it on both engines with the same schema and data. Fix the query or pin the application to a certified engine rather than disabling safety modes globally.
Best Value
Authentication fails after cutover
Inspect the account’s authentication plugin, host pattern, password hash compatibility and TLS requirement. Create a dedicated test account and validate it from the application host, not only from localhost.
Queries are slower despite similar hardware
Compare execution plans, statistics, indexes, cache hit rate and connection concurrency. A changed optimizer decision or a missing index is more actionable than a conclusion that one brand is inherently slow.
Replication will not start
Stop and review GTID, binlog format, server identifiers, privileges and version compatibility. Cross-engine replication should be treated as a designed migration project, not an automatic consequence of protocol compatibility.
Backups restore but the application is inconsistent
Check whether the backup captured all databases, routines, events, users and grants, and whether writes were quiesced or captured consistently. Test a full application workflow after restore, not just a successful command exit.
Decision framework for a new 2026 VPS
- Start with constraints: list vendor certifications, required MySQL features, operating-system support and your team’s operational experience.
- Eliminate incompatible choices: remove any engine that cannot satisfy a required JSON behavior, authentication method, replication design or support contract.
- Prefer a supported LTS: choose the newest branch your application and distribution certify; avoid end-of-life releases such as MariaDB 10.6 after July 6, 2026.
- Test the workload: measure representative queries and memory pressure on the actual VPS class instead of relying on a universal speed claim.
- Document the choice: record engine, major version, repository or image, lifecycle date, configuration, backup method and upgrade owner.
For a normal self-managed web VPS with no MySQL-only dependency, that process commonly ends with a supported MariaDB LTS. For a certified enterprise application, MySQL-specific JSON or Oracle support requirement, it ends with MySQL. Either outcome is sound when the version is supported, the workload is tested and recovery has been rehearsed.
Quick Recap
Deployment checklist
- Use a current supported image and verify its security-maintenance policy.
- Separate database and application resource limits enough to observe contention.
- Set connection limits and buffer/cache sizes for available memory; leave headroom for the operating system and application workers.
- Enable encrypted remote connections where traffic leaves the VPS.
- Restrict database network access with firewall rules and least-privilege accounts.
- Schedule tested backups and monitor both success and restore readiness.
- Track slow queries, memory pressure, disk growth, connection saturation and replication lag.
- Pin the major version and review release notes before upgrading.
- Keep a documented rollback procedure and an offline copy of the last known-good backup.
