When Marathon crashes, disconnects, lags, or puts you in the wrong queue, first use its reconnect path: restore your connection if necessary, relaunch the game, and try to rejoin your shell. Bungie says the shell remains in the world and may be protected by your crew. That recovery does not guarantee that lost gear will be returned. For continuing problems, separate a local Wi‑Fi issue from packet loss elsewhere on the internet, a Bungie service problem, or a matchmaking-state bug before changing advanced router settings.
What happens after a Marathon crash or disconnect
Marathon is designed to leave your shell in the activity when a crash or disconnection interrupts a run. In its February 23, 2026 networking and security article, the Marathon Dev Team says: “If you crash or get disconnected, your shell will remain in the game world and can be protected by your crew.” That means a disconnect is not automatically the same as losing the run immediately. Your crew can potentially keep the shell safe while you restart and return.

- Stabilize the connection. If your router, modem, or wireless link has dropped, restore it before reopening the game. Avoid repeatedly launching while the connection is still flapping.
- Relaunch Marathon. Start the game again on the same platform and account.
- Use the reconnect option or re-enter the run. Follow the prompt Marathon presents to reconnect to the existing activity rather than starting a new one.
- Check the result before making another change. If you return to the shell, finish the extraction or move to a safe position before troubleshooting further.
Do not treat reconnection as a gear-refund promise. Bungie says it will attempt to return starting gear only for a subset of errors involving its server or network infrastructure. Its stated limitation is that “Gear refund only applies to a subset of server error conditions and will not cover gameplay losses due to Internet connectivity or client-side problems.” A home-network dropout, damaged cable, unstable Wi‑Fi adapter, or game-client crash can therefore leave a loss outside that policy.

Different symptoms point to different tests. A crash closes the client or returns you to the platform dashboard. A disconnect leaves the game running but removes you from the activity. Lag delays movement, shots, or inventory actions; rubber-banding is a visible result of delayed or corrected state. A failed match can mean a queue that never completes, a mode that changes unexpectedly, or a session that starts with connection errors.

| Symptom | What it can indicate | First useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Game closes or freezes mid-run | Client-side crash, platform problem, or a connection failure that destabilized the session | Relaunch and attempt to reconnect to the shell; then look for repeatability after basic network checks |
| You are removed from a run | Intermittent local connection, packet loss, ISP-path congestion, or Bungie-side infrastructure trouble | Restore the connection, relaunch, and retry once; record the time and any displayed error |
| Delayed actions or rubber-banding | High latency, packet loss, or congestion | Stop competing network traffic and compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet if possible |
| Wrong queue or a queue that will not progress | Matchmaking state or service issue rather than raw bandwidth | Cancel the search, select the intended mode again, and check current patch or service notices |
Latency and packet loss are not the same problem
Bungie’s detailed explanation of these terms is written for Destiny, not Marathon, so use it as general networking guidance rather than a Marathon-specific diagnostic rule. Bungie describes lag and packet loss as separate possibilities:
- Latency is the time data takes to travel between your device and the game service and for the response to return. High latency makes an action feel late even when packets eventually arrive.
- Packet loss means some data never reaches its destination. The game may need to wait for missing information or correct your position, producing stutter and rubber-banding.
Both can be caused by congestion, weak or unstable Wi‑Fi, long geographic distance, outdated router or device firmware, or damaged network hardware. A fast speed-test result measures capacity at one moment; it does not prove that short bursts of loss or latency are absent during a Marathon match.
Work through local and home-network causes
1. Remove competing traffic
Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, video uploads, and other high-volume activity on the same connection. If another person or device is saturating the upstream link, Marathon can suffer even when ordinary web pages still load. Test a quiet period rather than changing several settings at once.

2. Compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet
Bungie’s Destiny latency guidance recommends trying a wired connection to help rule out Wi‑Fi signal strength and stability. For Marathon, this is a diagnostic experiment, not an official wired-only requirement or a guaranteed cure. Connect the gaming device directly to the router with Ethernet, keep the same game mode and time of day, and compare whether delayed actions or disconnects recur. If Ethernet is stable while Wi‑Fi is not, investigate distance, interference, access-point placement, or the wireless adapter rather than blaming the game service.
3. Restart and update network equipment
Power-cycle the modem and router according to their normal manufacturer procedure, then wait for the connection to return fully before launching Marathon. Check for firmware updates for the router, modem, and platform network hardware. Bungie lists older hardware or firmware as possible contributors in its Destiny guidance; applying that advice to Marathon is a reasonable general test, not a documented Marathon requirement.
4. Inspect physical hardware
Try another Ethernet cable or router port if the wired comparison is unstable. Look for loose connectors, damaged cable jackets, overheating equipment, or a failing power adapter. If every device on the network drops at the same time, the problem is more likely local equipment or the ISP than the Marathon client.
When the ISP or internet path is the likely culprit
Problems outside your home can cause intermittent loss even when your router appears connected. Congestion between your ISP and Bungie, a routing change, or a regional outage may affect Marathon while other services continue to work. Bungie Help told a player reporting “constant server connection errors and disconnects” in a June 2026 forum exchange that network errors could involve local hardware, packet loss, or ISP-level problems even when the connection looked fine at a glance. That response is support guidance to one report, not a diagnosis of every player.
Use the pattern of failures as evidence:
- If only one device fails and other devices remain stable, focus on that device, its Wi‑Fi path, or its cable.
- If several devices lose connectivity together, contact the ISP after checking the modem and router.
- If failures occur only at busy times or only on a particular route, provide the ISP with timestamps and packet-loss evidence rather than only a speed-test screenshot.
- If friends in different regions report the same outage at the same time, check Bungie’s service announcements before replacing local hardware.
For recurring problems after these basic checks, Bungie’s forum response points players toward Bungie’s networking material and then their ISP. It does not provide a Marathon-specific error-code playbook.
Check for Bungie-side service or infrastructure failures
A server-side failure can disconnect many players at once and is the situation in which Bungie’s limited gear-return policy may apply. The Marathon networking article does not promise restoration for every interruption, so preserve any error message, approximate time, platform, and activity when reporting a problem. Those details help distinguish a service incident from a local dropout and are more useful than repeatedly retrying without recording what changed.

Do not infer a service outage solely from one failed launch. First try the reconnect path and one controlled retry after your connection is stable. If multiple attempts fail with the same server message, look for current Bungie announcements or support updates before making advanced changes to your router.

Bungie documented a specific Marathon matchmaking-state defect in Update 1.1.0.5, published July 9, 2026. The notes say Bungie fixed a problem in which selecting Solo Queue could fail to update the matchmaking state, leaving a player in a different queue or unexpectedly in a crew-based queue.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Cancel the current search instead of waiting indefinitely.
- Return to the matchmaking selection screen and choose the intended mode again.
- Confirm that the displayed mode is Solo Queue or the relevant crew option before starting.
- If the game still presents the wrong state, restart the client and repeat the selection once.
- Check the newest Marathon patch notes and Bungie support announcements if the behavior continues. The July 9 note establishes a historical fix; it does not prove that the same bug is currently recurring.
A queue that selects the wrong mode is not evidence that your internet is slow. Matchmaking state can fail before a match is created, so changing DNS, buying faster service, or forwarding ports is unlikely to address that particular symptom without evidence of a network failure.
Use advanced router guidance cautiously
Bungie’s Network Troubleshooting Guide places UPnP, port forwarding, NAT checks, and related configuration in an advanced Destiny section. The available official material does not establish Marathon-specific port numbers, NAT requirements, or platform-by-platform router settings. Do not copy Destiny port-forwarding instructions into Marathon as though they were verified game requirements.
Changing router security or NAT settings can create new exposure or break other devices. Attempt those changes only when current Marathon-specific documentation directs you, and record the original values so you can undo the change. For most players, eliminating Wi‑Fi instability, competing traffic, outdated firmware, and ISP faults is a safer first pass.
A practical escalation checklist
- Write down the exact symptom: crash, disconnect, lag, rubber-banding, wrong queue, or failed match.
- Record the time, activity, platform, displayed error, and whether other devices lost service.
- After a crash or disconnect, restore the connection, relaunch Marathon, and try to reconnect to the shell.
- Pause household downloads and compare a stable Ethernet test with Wi‑Fi when feasible.
- Restart and update the modem, router, and relevant platform network hardware.
- Check current Marathon patch notes and service announcements, especially if matchmaking state is wrong.
- Contact the ISP when multiple devices or repeated packet-loss symptoms point beyond the home.
- Use Bungie support channels with the collected details; do not assume a gear return unless the error matches the limited server-side conditions Bungie describes.
What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
Bungie has documented Marathon’s shell-reconnect behavior, a conditional starting-gear return policy, and a dated fix for one Solo Queue state problem. Its detailed explanations of latency, packet loss, Wi‑Fi, firmware, UPnP, NAT, and port forwarding are Destiny support materials. They are useful for forming careful tests, but they do not establish a current Marathon error-code table, guaranteed crash fix, platform-specific network settings, or a universal remedy for failed matches.
