Marathon Beginner’s Guide: Learn Maps, Extract Safely, and Keep Your Loot

A practical Marathon beginner’s guide to choosing a zone, learning routes, conserving supplies, timing extraction and making each run count.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest beginner strategy in Marathon is to treat every run as a risk decision, not a race to collect the fullest backpack. Pick a manageable objective, learn a few landmarks, conserve supplies, and start toward an exit while you still have time to travel and activate it. You keep a haul only if you extract; the gear you take into a later run is at risk again.

This guide explains how to prepare, read a zone, manage sound and supplies, and make a practical exit plan. Zone rotations and mechanics change in this live-service game, so use the current in-game selector and Bungie updates for details that can change.

What a Marathon run is actually for

Marathon is an extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. You deploy, scavenge, take on objectives and threats, then try to exfiltrate with useful loot. Extracted gear and materials can help you assemble stronger builds for later runs, but those builds are not guaranteed to survive the next deployment. Bungie describes that loop on the official Marathon overview.

That changes how to judge a run. A backpack packed with valuable items is not a successful haul until you get out. An early extraction with a needed contract item or barter material can be a better result than one more risky detour. Likewise, a fight is not automatically worth taking just because you might win it: ammunition, healing, time, noise and exposure all have costs.

Cronos - PlayStation 5
  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

For a beginner, success is partly about learning. A run can teach you the route between two landmarks, where you heard a fight, which supplies you used, or how long you needed to reach an exit. Keep the objective small enough that you can still make a deliberate extraction decision.

Choose a starting zone with the current selector

Bungie’s March 5, 2026 starter tips recommend Perimeter (Beginner) for players learning the game. The same guidance contrasts it with regular Perimeter for players seeking more PvP. This is a dated recommendation, not a guarantee that Beginner is PvP-free or that the current selector has not changed; check the live zone options before queueing. See Bungie’s starter tips.

Choice What the cited guidance establishes Beginner’s use
Perimeter (Beginner) Bungie’s March 5, 2026 tips recommend it for players learning the game. Choose it when available if your priority is learning basic routes and the extraction loop with less PvP pressure than regular Perimeter. Do not assume it removes PvP.
Regular Perimeter Bungie describes it as an option for players who want more PvP. Consider it when you are ready for more player-combat exposure, rather than treating it as the default first map.
Other zones The official overview describes multiple zones with escalating difficulty; the cited tips do not establish complete, current beginner comparisons for each one. Read the live selector and current Bungie zone guidance before choosing. Do not infer hazard, loot or extraction details from a zone’s name alone.

The choice is not simply “easy map” versus “hard map.” Think about the kind of learning you want: basic navigation, contract completion, environmental awareness, or exposure to more player fights. If a run becomes chaotic, return to a manageable option if it is still available rather than taking greater difficulty as a requirement for progress.

Before you deploy: set one goal and pack for the run

Pick one useful objective

Decide what would make the run worthwhile before you enter. It might be completing a contract, collecting a particular barter material, or learning the route between a landing area and a landmark. Bungie advises checking contract objectives on the map screen because some contracts are zone-specific, and tracking needed barter items so relevant drops are marked. That is more useful than roaming without a plan and only deciding what mattered after your inventory is full.

  1. Review progression: Inspect faction upgrade trees and identify an upgrade path that would help your next few runs. You do not need to pursue every branch at once.
  2. Check the contract: Read the objective and its map-screen clues. Confirm that the selected zone fits any zone-specific requirement.
  3. Track a barter need: If you are looking for a particular material, mark it in-game so drops can be identified as relevant.
  4. Set a stopping rule: Decide in advance what will make you turn toward extraction, such as finding the needed item, completing the objective, or using more supplies than planned.

Bring ammunition and healing you can afford to risk

Do not assume you will find enough ammunition or healing once you are in the zone. Bungie recommends carrying plenty because those supplies may be scarce during a run. Check your loadout and consumables before deploying, and budget them for both likely PvE threats and the possibility of a player encounter.

Think of each carried item in terms of a trade-off: it may help you survive or finish an objective, but it is part of the gear you are risking. Bring a practical supply rather than automatically taking your best kit, especially while you are still learning routes and making avoidable mistakes. There is no universal number of rounds or healing items in the cited guidance, so tune your loadout from your own experience rather than relying on a made-up fixed count.

Learn maps by building a route, not memorizing every room

There is no static map atlas in the official materials cited here that establishes a complete, current route for every zone. Map layouts, active zones and live-service details can change, so treat landmarks and paths you learn in play as useful observations—not a promise that every later match will unfold the same way.

Use a short landmark loop

On an early run, choose a nearby landmark, move to it, then identify one plausible route toward a second point or an exit area. Notice obvious approaches, cover and places where you could pause to check your position. A small loop gives you spatial knowledge you can reuse. Trying to remember every room, loot location and route in a single deployment overloads attention that you need for threats and extraction timing.

  • After reaching a landmark, note which direction you arrived from and which route could take you onward.
  • Pay attention to where you heard gunfire, where you encountered UESC forces or hazards, and whether the route forced you into exposed movement.
  • Look for alternatives rather than assuming the shortest path is safest. A route that avoids one obvious danger may still expose you to players or another threat.
  • Use the map screen for objective clues and contract locations, but check the live match for your actual position and circumstances.

Plan backward from the exit

Once you have a plausible exit in mind, think backward: where are you now, how much time is needed to travel there, and what could slow you down? An exit is not a guaranteed safe zone. Another Runner may be nearby, an approach may draw attention, and an exfil can involve a UESC patrol. Static guidance cannot tell you which route will be safe in a particular match.

Do not wait until the backpack is full to think about leaving. A useful habit is to check your objective, remaining supplies and timer whenever you reach a new landmark. If you have enough for the goal, or the route looks longer than expected, stop extending the run and begin moving toward a viable exit.

Sound, visibility and threats: surviving without taking every fight

Sound is information other players can use. Bungie’s tips specifically call out movement, looting, opening doors, activating an exfil, using items, healing, swapping weapons and firing as noisy actions. A gunshot is not the only thing that can reveal your presence. Treat each action as a choice about when and where to make noise.

Make noisy actions deliberately

Before looting or healing, consider whether you are in a place where someone can approach unseen or hear the activity. Avoid treating a menu, a door or a weapon swap as an interruption to the danger; those actions take place in the same live environment. If you suspect someone is close, moving to a more defensible position before using supplies may be preferable to stopping in an exposed spot.

Crouching makes heat dissipate faster, according to Bungie, but the guidance does not say it makes a Runner silent. Do not rely on crouching to hide every action or erase the noise of looting, healing, doors or equipment use.

Respect environmental and PvE danger

Player fights are only one source of risk. Bungie’s starter tips call out tick nests, UESC claymores and particularly deadly poison plants. These hazards can punish a route choice or distract you at exactly the moment you need supplies or an exit. Watch the environment while moving between objectives; do not spend all your attention scanning for other Runners.

Against low-level enemies, Bungie recommends using your knife when appropriate to conserve ammunition. Look for ammo crates as well. Outskirts containers are more likely to hold healing or ammunition, according to the same tips, which makes them worth considering when supplies are running low—but a container’s location does not guarantee its contents or make the approach safe.

Smoke is specifically recommended to break UESC aggro. Keep that claim narrow: the cited advice does not establish that smoke reliably breaks attention from every enemy type or from other players.

When to extract: timing the exit before you are desperate

Exfils appear semi-randomly during a match rather than all being fixed at the start. Bungie says an activated exfil takes about a minute to warm up, and guarded exfils bring a UESC patrol. Those facts make extraction a process, not an instant escape button. You need time to reach an exit, activate it and handle the situation that follows.

  1. Choose a plausible exit early. As you move through the zone, keep an eye out for an available exfil and consider how you would reach it from your current location.
  2. Start moving before the final moment. Leave time for travel and the roughly one-minute warm-up after activation, plus whatever delay comes from a patrol or other threats.
  3. Expect attention. An activated exfil and the activity around it can make your position easier to infer. Watch approaches and avoid assuming that reaching the area makes you safe.
  4. Use the warm-up time thoughtfully. Bungie says you do not need to remain inside the exfil area until the circle appears. That gives you room to watch approaches rather than standing still in the area through the countdown.
  5. Commit to leaving. Once you have chosen extraction, avoid turning back for one more loot stop unless the live situation genuinely changes and you can still meet the exit timing.

The one-minute warm-up is not the whole time budget: you must also reach the exfil, and a UESC patrol or player presence can change the plan. No static route or timing formula guarantees a safe escape. If the expected trip is uncertain, give yourself margin rather than treating the final possible moment as your target.

Keep the valuable loot; do not waste backpack space

Extraction is what banks the run’s useful haul. While deciding what to keep, account for your objective and the supplies you consumed, not just the apparent value of each item. Bungie specifically notes that depleted Patch Kits and Shield Charges do not extract, even for credits. Use them when needed and make room for more valuable loot instead of carrying empty consumables to the exit.

Inventory choices should support the next decision. If you have the barter material you came for, carrying more miscellaneous loot may not justify extra travel or another noisy fight. If an item is tied to a contract or a planned upgrade, its usefulness may outweigh an item that looks valuable in isolation. The game’s tracking feature helps prioritize relevant barter drops; use it before a run rather than trying to reconstruct your needs during a pressured extraction.

A repeatable beginner routine

This simple sequence turns each deployment into a controlled learning loop rather than an improvised scavenger hunt.

  1. Before queueing: Select an appropriate available zone, check the contract and map-screen clues, inspect faction upgrades, track a needed barter item, and bring ammunition and healing.
  2. At the start: Establish where you are and pick one nearby landmark or objective. Avoid committing to a long route before you understand the immediate threats.
  3. During the route: Listen and observe. Make looting, healing and weapon changes deliberately; watch for environmental hazards, conserve ammunition where practical, and use supplies when the run calls for them.
  4. At each decision point: Ask whether the current objective is complete, what you have gained, what supplies remain, and whether another stop still leaves enough time to extract.
  5. On the way out: Travel toward a plausible exfil with time for the warm-up and potential threats. Use the activation interval to monitor approaches rather than remaining stationary in the area unnecessarily.
  6. After the run: Note one route lesson, one resource lesson and one objective or progression step to pursue next. Adjust your loadout or route based on what actually happened.

A run that ends without extraction may still teach you where a route failed or which action made you vulnerable, but the loot is not banked. Use that information to make the next run more deliberate; do not treat a failed extraction as proof that every future run requires a stronger loadout or a more aggressive fight.

How current maps and seasonal changes affect this guide

Bungie’s live site features Season 2 and Night Marsh. Its June 2, 2026 announcement describes Night Marsh as a pitch-black version of Dire Marsh with new threats, and introduces Sentinel and the Cradle progression system. The October 6, 2026 roadmap describes a three-week Sponsored Queue rotation while saying regular Extraction remains available in each zone during that rotation. Those are dated live-service details, not permanent map instructions. Check the current selector and Bungie’s updates for what is available now: Season 2 is Now Live and the October roadmap.

The October 6 roadmap says Marathon: Symbiosis is planned for December 8, 2026, with a first permanent PvE experience, an expanded Perimeter and new onboarding among the announced features. As of October 13, 2026, that date is a future plan, not a feature already available. Confirm current release details directly with Bungie rather than planning around an announcement as if it were live.

This general guide does not provide a step-by-step clearance route for Cryo Archive or Night Marsh locks. Bungie’s overview establishes Cryo Archive as an endgame, raid-like activity, and the Season 2 announcement describes Night Marsh as having distinctive features, but the cited materials do not establish complete current walkthroughs for either. For those activities, use current zone-specific guidance instead of assuming the beginner extraction routine covers every mechanic.
