A single dashboard can bring host switching and routine server checks into one browser window, replacing the need to keep three separate SSH sessions open. It does not combine the servers or eliminate SSH: connections, authentication, and trust decisions still matter. The title does not identify which dashboard was used, so Cockpit is discussed below only as a documented example—not as the author’s confirmed tool or setup.
What changes when you manage several servers from one dashboard?
With separate SSH sessions, each machine has its own terminal window or tab. A server dashboard can give you one browser entry point for selecting hosts, viewing system information, and carrying out supported administration tasks. That can make routine checks and host switching less fragmented.

The interface is a layer over separate machines, not a way to turn them into one system. Each host remains distinct, and the dashboard’s capabilities depend on its software and configuration. The Cockpit Project describes its product as a web interface for server administration, including a browser terminal: Cockpit Project.
How does a dashboard reach the other hosts?
Cockpit’s documented multi-host workflow uses one host as the primary entry point and connects from there to additional machines over SSH. Users authenticate to those hosts with passwords and/or supported SSH keys. In other words, the browser provides a unified way to navigate and administer; SSH still carries the documented secondary-host connections. See the Cockpit multi-host documentation.

- 【DeskPi RackMate T2】It's made of aluminum alloy and acrylic frame mini chassis which you can setup your own cluster or home assistant server. For 10 inch 4U Server Cabinet (DeskPi RackMate T0), please refer to ASIN B0DPGZPTPP . For 10 inch 8U Server Cabinet (DeskPi RackMate T1), please refer to ASIN B0CSCWVTQ7 . NOTE: the rack is designed for 10-inch form factors and is not compatible with standard 19-inch enterprise equipment.
- 【10-inch width】The cabinet has a width of 10 inches, which is a relatively small size that saves space while accommodating sufficient equipment. With dimensions of 11.02x10.23x23.22 inches, it is suitable for small offices, home environments, and large enterprises looking to save space.
- 【Open Design】The cabinet adopts an open design, allowing easy access to all devices inside. This design facilitates equipment installation and maintenance, aids in device cooling, and maintains optimal working conditions.
- 【12U Standard】The cabinet has a height of 12U, which is a standard unit size. With 1U equaling 1.75 inches, 12U implies a height of 21 inches.
- 【Translucent Design】Both sides are made of translucent acrylic, providing dust resistance and reduced weight. This design allows direct observation of the cabinet's interior, and users can add ambient lights for decoration.
That distinction matters operationally. The secondary hosts must be reachable, and SSH authentication and host-key verification remain part of the access path. A dashboard does not automatically make these connections safer or remove the need to manage credentials and access controls.
Is Cockpit’s multi-host feature a current choice?
Use care when considering Cockpit specifically for multi-host management. Its current documentation marks that feature deprecated as of Cockpit version 322. Separately, the project landing page reports Cockpit version 366, released on 13 August 2026. The deprecation applies to Cockpit’s multi-host feature; it is not a claim that every Cockpit feature is deprecated. Check the project’s release information and feature documentation for the version you plan to run.

What security boundary does a multi-host dashboard introduce?
The Cockpit Project warns that, in multi-host mode, code from the local and remote hosts runs in the same browser context without isolation. A connected host can therefore affect the primary host and other connected systems. Cockpit advises connecting only to trusted machines and documents disabling multi-host access with AllowMultiHost=false. Read its multi-host security guidance before enabling the feature.

This is a product-specific warning, not a blanket assessment of every dashboard. Likewise, whether a management interface should be reachable beyond a trusted network depends on the product’s current guidance and the network design; the available information here does not establish a particular homelab network. Avoid treating a convenient browser entry point as a substitute for carefully scoped access.

Would an SSH client be a better fit?
If your main need is to save host details and open terminal sessions, an SSH client may be a closer fit than a server-administration dashboard. For example, Termius describes saved hosts and terminal-session workflows on its official site. That makes it an adjacent option, not an equivalent replacement for dashboard controls such as system overviews or administration features.

| Need | Server dashboard example: Cockpit | Terminal-first client example: Termius |
|---|---|---|
| Primary workflow | Browser-based server administration and terminal access, according to the Cockpit Project: project page. | Saved host access and terminal sessions, according to Termius: official site. |
| Secondary-host access | Documented multi-host connections use SSH from a primary host; the feature is marked deprecated as of Cockpit 322: Cockpit documentation. | Saved host and terminal features are described by the vendor; equivalent dashboard controls are not established: official site. |
| What to verify | Version status, SSH reachability and authentication, and the browser-context security warning: Cockpit documentation. | Whether its host and session workflow meets your needs; the cited description does not establish it as a system-administration dashboard: official site. |
How to choose a workflow for your homelab
- Choose around the task. For browser-based status and administration controls, look at server dashboards. For saved SSH destinations and terminal work, consider an SSH client.
- Check multi-host support for the exact version. A feature’s presence in old instructions does not establish that it remains supported; Cockpit’s multi-host capability has a documented deprecation caveat.
- Map the access path. Identify which machine is the entry point, how it reaches each other host, and how each connection authenticates.
- Set a trust boundary. Only connect machines you trust, and review the specific product’s advice before making its management interface reachable outside your trusted network.
