Malwarebytes Scam Link Check vs. VirusTotal: Which URL Checker Should You Use?

Malwarebytes offers a simpler consumer verdict; VirusTotal provides multiple vendor signals. Here’s how privacy, report age, and each tool’s limits should shape your choice.

Use Malwarebytes Scam Link Check for a quick consumer-friendly verdict and guidance; use VirusTotal when you want to compare multiple security vendors’ findings—and only if the URL is safe to submit publicly. Do not put confidential, sensitive, or personally identifying links into VirusTotal’s public service: its analyses and reports are shared. Neither tool has been shown here to be more accurate than the other, and a clean result from either is not a guarantee that a link is safe.

Malwarebytes Scam Link Check vs. VirusTotal at a glance

Question Malwarebytes Scam Link Check VirusTotal public service
Best fit A straightforward consumer verdict with an explanation and suggested next steps. Comparing partner-specific detections and report context for a URL that is safe to submit publicly.
What the result includes Malwarebytes describes safe, dangerous, or unknown verdicts, a screenshot, plain-language reasons, and next steps. Malwarebytes’ announcement. Partner findings and other URL context, including results from antivirus scanners and URL/domain blocklists. VirusTotal report documentation.
Detection breadth Malwarebytes describes its own threat-intelligence ecosystem and checks, but its launch announcement does not give a partner-count comparison. VirusTotal says it inspects URLs with more than 70 antivirus scanners and URL/domain blocklisting services, alongside other analysis tools. That count does not establish superior accuracy. VirusTotal: How it works.
Public-submission privacy The launch announcement does not state URL retention, visibility, or sharing terms; those terms are unknown from that source. Public searches store analyses and reports; submissions are shared with examining partners and the public community, and submitted content may also be shared with premium customers. Do not submit sensitive URLs. VirusTotal: Searching and VirusTotal: How it works.
Private organizational option No comparable private-analysis option is described in the launch announcement. VirusTotal Private Scanning is a separate paid, organization-scoped service. Its analyses are visible only within the organization for a limited retention period, but they omit multi-antivirus and URL-scan partner verdicts. VirusTotal: Private Scanning.

Which checker should you use?

Choose Malwarebytes for an understandable first check

Malwarebytes announced the free Scam Link Check on October 5, 2026. The company says you can paste a URL without a download, payment, or login. It describes checks for malicious sites, phishing pages, freshly registered domains, and redirect chains, followed by a safe, dangerous, or unknown verdict, screenshot, explanation, and suggested next steps. These are the company’s descriptions of its tool, not independent comparative test results. Malwarebytes’ launch announcement.

Choose VirusTotal when you need multiple vendor signals

VirusTotal aggregates findings from antivirus scanners, URL/domain blocklists, analysis tools, and community contributions. Its public interface has high scanning priority among its publicly available submission routes, according to its documentation. The results can help you see whether partners flag a URL and can surface possible false positives, but VirusTotal presents a collection of signals, not an accuracy guarantee. VirusTotal: How it works.

Do not choose based on a claim that one is more accurate

No independent head-to-head detection test or false-positive benchmark establishes which checker performs better. VirusTotal’s larger stated scanner count describes breadth, not proof that its verdict is more reliable. Treat either service as one input to a decision, not as a definitive safety certificate.

Privacy: what happens when you check a URL?

VirusTotal public searches are not confidential

VirusTotal says its public search stores analyses and reports. Its general description says submitted material is shared with examining partners and the public community, and may also be shared with premium customers. Avoid public lookup or submission for URLs that contain private account tokens, personal information, confidential company details, or any other sensitive material. VirusTotal: Searching and VirusTotal: How it works.

Malwarebytes’ announcement does not settle its URL-handling terms

The launch announcement does not specify whether Scam Link Check retains submitted URLs or makes them visible to others. That absence does not establish that Malwarebytes is more private; check the service’s current terms before submitting a sensitive link.

Private Scanning serves a different organizational need

VirusTotal’s paid Private Scanning option is for organization-scoped analysis: URLs and reports remain visible only within the organization for a limited retention period. It does not return the multi-antivirus and URL-scan partner verdicts available through public analysis, so it is not a confidential version of the same multi-engine check. VirusTotal: Private Scanning.

How to check a suspicious link without opening it

  1. Preview or copy the link first. Do not tap through to test it. Malwarebytes’ FAQ recommends pressing and holding a link on a phone to preview or copy it. Malwarebytes’ launch announcement.
  2. For a quick explanatory result, use Malwarebytes Scam Link Check. Malwarebytes says the free checker needs no login or download. Review its verdict, screenshot, reasons, and recommended next steps.
  3. For multiple vendor findings, use VirusTotal only when the URL is not sensitive. Public searches and submitted reports are shared as described above.
  4. Read the analysis or report date as well as the verdict. A result reflects information available to the service at that time; it cannot guarantee what the destination will do when you open it.
  5. If you already opened the page, do not enter information. Malwarebytes advises against entering details on a suspicious page and says Scam Link Check provides recommended next steps. Malwarebytes’ launch announcement.

How to interpret a clean or alarming result

A clean result is limited evidence, not a guarantee

VirusTotal’s URL search may normalize the submitted address and return the most recent report it has for that normalized URL. That report may not reflect a fresh visit or what a person would encounter at the moment of clicking. Vendor blocklist updates can flow into user-facing verdicts, but reports remain snapshots: check the displayed date and remember that a destination can change. VirusTotal: Searching, VirusTotal: Reports, and VirusTotal: How it works.

A warning deserves attention, but results can differ

VirusTotal shows partner-specific results, so a warning from one partner is not the same thing as universal agreement. Its documentation describes the service as a way to examine collected signals, including possible false positives; do not treat a single detection as proof without considering the report context. Conversely, no detections do not prove a link is harmless.

What Malwarebytes’ launch claims do—and do not—show

Malwarebytes also says users can report a website, feeding information back into its threat intelligence. Its October 5, 2026 announcement attributes several scam-related figures to outside organizations or its own research, but those figures do not measure Scam Link Check’s detection accuracy. In particular, the announcement’s statement that roughly one in five Scam Guard submissions were flagged as high-risk concerns Scam Guard submissions, not a Scam Link Check accuracy rate.
