Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake an Atlassian Cloud migration more predictable by treating it as a sequence of decisions and checks—not as a single assistant-driven transfer. Inventory Jira and Confluence, settle identity and access issues, assess Marketplace apps, choose what moves and when, rehearse the plan, then prepare owners to validate the result. Jira and Confluence have separate Cloud Migration Assistants and product-specific checklists, so a project covering both needs to plan for both.
What the Cloud Migration Assistants do—and what they do not
Atlassian provides a Jira Cloud Migration Assistant for moving Jira from Server or Data Center to Cloud, and a separate Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant for Confluence. Their functions include preparation and migration activities such as app and user assessment, email-domain review, data migration, and checks, reports, or error logs. The exact capabilities and prerequisites depend on the product and current configuration.

The assistants are part of a broader migration journey, not a substitute for planning work outside the tools. Atlassian directs new migration planners to its broader Cloud migration guidance, and its product-specific checklists remain important because assistant checks do not cover everything. Installing or updating the Jira assistant does not require downtime or a restart, according to Atlassian; that statement concerns the assistant installation, not the operational impact of migrating Jira data. Network allowlisting may also be needed for the assistant to connect to Atlassian.

Inventory the source and destination
Write down whether the project covers Jira, Confluence, or both; the source product versions; installed Marketplace apps; identity sources; public-access settings; integrations; and the intended Cloud destination configuration. Check the current Atlassian checklist for each product against the actual source and destination. Supported versions, limits, and prerequisites can differ by product and change over time, so do not assume a single generic compatibility rule covers both.
Make identity a dedicated workstream
Decide which users and groups are in scope. Where directory users are involved, confirm they are active and synchronized as required. Review invalid or duplicate email addresses, potential group conflicts, and whether people shared across Jira and Confluence use consistent email identities. Atlassian warns that identity issues can interfere with account mapping and may result in duplicate users; resolve them before treating the migration plan as ready.
Confirm permissions, limits, and connectivity
Check that the migration operator has the required permissions in both the source and destination. Review relevant Cloud user, storage, or other applicable limits; firewall and proxy rules; and destination public-access settings. Jira’s checklist also covers Data Center setup, character and asset entity limits, and integrations. Confluence has its own prerequisites, including heap and timezone considerations. Use each product’s current checklist rather than inferring that passing one product’s checks means the other is ready.

How to decide what moves, and in what order
Choose a scope that fits the dependencies
Both product paths support migrating all data in one broad plan or dividing work into multiple plans. A broad plan reduces the number of separate migration waves to coordinate, while selective plans give a team more control over scope and sequencing. Selective plans also require clear ownership of dependencies and a deliberate order; otherwise, related users, groups, content, or app data may be split across waves. Complete assessments before migration and choose based on your product scope, dependencies, identity setup, and cutover constraints—not on a universal rule that one plan shape is always safer.
Decide app by app
For every Marketplace app, record whether it is needed in Cloud, whether a native Cloud capability or alternative is sufficient, and how any required app data will move. A Cloud version may not exist, an assistant-supported migration path may be unavailable, or the app may require a separate process from its vendor. Confirm the path, prerequisites, data ownership, timing, and support arrangements with the app partner. Atlassian says the assistants do not assess app-data security, so customers must address security, legal, and regulatory requirements with the relevant partners.

Consider pre-migrating shared foundations
Atlassian recommends considering pre-migration of users, groups, and attachments to reduce downtime. Moving these ahead of other content may lower the amount of work left for the main cutover, but it adds planning and coordination: define which plan handles each item, how dependencies are maintained, and who verifies the result. Whether that trade-off makes sense depends on the migration’s scope and operational window.
How to compare the main planning options
| Decision | Option | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Migration scope | One broad plan | Moves a larger scope together, with fewer separate waves to coordinate; confirm that dependencies and the operational window fit. |
| Migration scope | Multiple selective plans | Allows tighter scope control and sequencing, but requires explicit dependency ownership and an agreed order. |
| App data | Assistant-supported path | Use when the current product and app documentation confirms a supported path; verify its prerequisites and what data it covers. |
| App data | Partner-led or separate path | Coordinate timing, requirements, data ownership, and support with the app vendor; include the required security, legal, and regulatory review. |
| Users, groups, attachments | Pre-migrate | Can reduce work during the main cutover, while requiring earlier coordination and validation. |
| Users, groups, attachments | Move with other content | Keeps these items in the broader migration sequence, but may leave more work for the migration window. |
The documentation does not establish one best option for every organization. Select based on the source configuration, data and app dependencies, identity topology, and the cutover constraints you actually have.

How to rehearse the migration and use the results
Atlassian strongly recommends trialing a Confluence migration to a test or staging site before the final move; its Jira checklist also recommends a test migration. Treat the rehearsal as a way to expose issues and improve the plan, not as proof that every production error will be found.
- Prepare a representative test scope. Use the product-specific checklist and document what is included, which apps have a migration path, and what is deliberately outside the test.
- Run the test migration. Review the assistant’s checks, reports, and error logs alongside the outcomes important to your organization.
- Assign and track fixes. Give each issue an owner, record the resolution, and retest affected areas. Capture unresolved risks and their impact in the production decision.
- Keep the Jira assistant version consistent. For Jira production migration, Atlassian advises using the same assistant version used for the test migration.
What to prepare for Jira destination state and repeat runs
Jira Cloud Migration Assistant adds migrated data; it does not delete or overwrite data in the source or destination. Atlassian also says repeated runs may link identical configuration items to avoid duplicates. Plan the destination’s initial state accordingly: identify existing Cloud data that overlaps the source, decide which configuration should be present, and determine how repeat runs fit the migration plan. Do not treat a rerun as a clean reset of the destination.

How to prepare for cutover and validate each wave
Before production migration, agree how source changes will be controlled during the move. Depending on the team’s needs, that may mean a change freeze or a read-only approach. Name the people responsible for business validation and decide what they will inspect after each wave.
- Confirm the expected users, groups, permissions, and access behavior.
- Check key Jira issues or Confluence content, along with relevant attachments.
- Verify app data using the agreed app-specific migration path.
- Test important links and integrations that support business workflows.
Atlassian’s guidance supports planning and test migrations, but it does not establish a universal downtime promise or a single success threshold. Set operational expectations and acceptance criteria for your own environment rather than assuming a standard duration or outcome.
