To make an SVG cat walk convincingly, keep each paw fixed to a ground-space target during its stance, then use inverse kinematics (IK) to pose the leg around it. For the artwork, use a bone rig with blended joints rather than rotating a whole leg as a rigid cutout. To animate a jump, stage crouch, push-off, flight and landing, and make the motion flow continuously into and out of the airborne arc.
Why rigidly rotating a leg can break the drawing
A leg that rotates as one solid SVG shape is simple to animate, but the silhouette can pull away from the rump or belly at the hip. A bone rig places joints and bones inside the artwork, then deforms the outline as the limb bends. Points in the middle of a bone follow it; points near a joint blend between neighboring bones; points above the first joint stay with the body. Subtle blending between the body outline and upper leg can also soften a hard seam.

These are techniques described for the example in SVG Lab’s cat-walk article, published September 25, 2026, not a promise that every SVG renderer or rig supports the same deformation features. Keep the drawing editable and organize its body and limbs so the rig can control them.
How to stop paws from sliding during a walk
Animate the paw’s position on the ground, not just the leg’s rotation. During stance, hold the paw target stationary in ground coordinates while the cat’s body moves over it. Once the paw passes behind the hip, lift it, swing it forward, and plant it for the next stance. IK calculates the joint angles needed to reach each target; a practical leg-rigging example likewise uses fixed bone lengths and ground-relative foot targets (Stick Motion documentation, version 1.1.0).

- Set a ground-space target. Record where the paw should contact the floor, independently of the moving body.
- Hold it through stance. Keep its horizontal ground position fixed while the body travels forward, and solve the leg pose to reach it.
- Lift and swing. After stance, raise the paw in a low arc and move it forward.
- Plant again. Start the next stance at the new target, then coordinate body speed and gait timing so the cycle can loop cleanly.
As Usman Bashir, author of SVG Lab’s example, puts the idea: “The fix turns the question around. Instead of deciding how far each leg rotates, you decide where each paw is on the ground, and the leg works out how to reach it.”
How to check the gait sequence
Make a footfall plot with a separate lane for each paw, marking stance and swing. SVG Lab reports this order for its corrected cat walk: a hind paw, the forepaw on the same side, the other hind paw, then that side’s forepaw. Its described walk keeps at least two paws on the ground. Treat this as the sequence reported for that example, rather than a universal veterinary gait reference, and use the lanes to spot timing that a still frame can hide.

How to animate a jump with a readable gravity arc
Build the jump in four phases: crouch, push-off, flight and landing. The crouch anticipates the movement; push-off accelerates the body upward. During flight, the cited example uses a parabolic path under a constant-gravity model: vertical speed decreases on the way up, is lower near the apex, and increases on descent. Let the hind legs trail and tuck and the front legs reach toward landing, then compress and settle on contact.

What SVG animation can—and cannot—do by itself
SVG SMIL provides declarative animation for SVG attributes, transformations and motion paths. MDN documents <animate> for attributes and <animateTransform> for transformations; the MDN guide to SVG animation with SMIL also covers motion-path animation. The W3C SVG Animations Level 2 editor’s draft, dated October 2, 2026, documents <set> and <animateMotion>.
Those declarative elements can move SVG elements or change attributes, but a deforming bone rig and foot-target IK are an additional layer of logic; simply sending a group along a path does not supply either. SVG Lab’s article says its example used a separate animation MCP for the rigged cat and that the tool remained in development as of September 25, 2026. That is the article’s time-specific claim, not confirmation of present availability.

How to validate the walk and jump
Inspect motion between keyframes, not only at them. Sample at a fixed rate—such as 30 or 60 samples per second—and check these properties:

- Count grounded paws at each sample and check the example’s reported expectation of at least two during the walk.
- Review the separate-lane footfall plot against the intended sequence.
- Zoom in on joints at the most extreme poses, where seams and silhouette breaks are easiest to see.
- At the jump’s push-off-to-flight handoff, check that position and velocity remain continuous; verify airborne paws stay above the floor until contact.
SVG Lab reports a maximum planted-paw drift of 0.04 pixels across its example’s walk and jump, and says it sampled the near hind paw’s horizontal position 30 times per second. Those are the author’s measurements for that animation, not an independently verified benchmark, a universal no-slide threshold or a required sampling rate. The source’s gait and measurement claims are example-specific; the W3C document cited above is an editor’s draft.
