A Vedic astrology API can return plausible but wrong results when calculation settings leak or disappear between requests—and it can hide a rate-limit response behind what looks like a browser CORS error. In a 2026 account of building GrahaAPI, developer Vaibhav Govind describes how he addressed both problems: reasserting sidereal settings at calculation boundaries, testing stable domain invariants, and tracing errors through middleware rather than trusting the browser’s summary.
Why an astrology API has unusual correctness risks
An API that calculates chart data has two distinct engineering responsibilities: it must handle ordinary service concerns such as concurrency and rate limits, and it must apply the intended calculation settings consistently. A response can be valid JSON, arrive quickly, and still be wrong if a native library uses a different zodiac mode from the one the caller expects.

Govind’s account concerns GrahaAPI’s implementation. The specific incidents and fixes below are his report, not independently verified tests of the service or its calculations. They are useful as engineering case studies, but should not be read as proof that every ephemeris library behaves the same way.

How a fresh worker returned the wrong zodiac mode
Govind says his deployment used a C ephemeris library whose zodiac selection behaved as thread-local state in that environment. A worker that had not received the expected setting could therefore calculate tropical positions when the API was meant to return sidereal output using Lahiri ayanamsha.

That distinction matters downstream. In Govind’s account, the mode error could shift longitudes by about 24 degrees, changing the Moon’s nakshatra and affecting subsequent dasha timing. The exact behavior depends on the library, its bindings, and how the application deploys workers; the reported state behavior should not be generalized to every C library or ephemeris setup.
Set mutable configuration at the operation boundary
The practical fix Govind describes is to reassert sidereal mode at the start of every function that uses the ephemeris. This makes the function’s required configuration explicit at the point where the calculation happens, rather than assuming a prior request or worker initialization left the process in the right state.
As he puts it: “If you bind to a C library, find out where it keeps its state before you put it behind a threadpool.” The broader lesson is to establish the lifetime and scope of every mutable setting—per call, per thread, or process-wide—before relying on it in concurrent code.

Consider serialization when native state is shared
A separate public Swiss Ephemeris API repository describes serializing calls behind a process lock because ayanamsha and topocentre are held in C globals. That repository illustrates one way to protect a particular implementation from shared native state; it does not confirm that GrahaAPI had the same storage model or that a process lock is right for every application.
For an implementation handling concurrent requests with different settings, determine whether the underlying library supports safe parallel calls. If it uses shared mutable state, options include serializing access or isolating calculations so requests cannot overwrite one another’s configuration. The right choice depends on the library and deployment, and should be validated with concurrent requests that deliberately use different settings.
How to write regression tests for astrology
Govind’s approach is to test domain invariants: properties expected to remain true across code changes, rather than only checking that a function returns a plausible-looking object. Such fixtures can catch regressions in calculation logic even when the output is structurally valid.

Use stable, reviewable expectations
Examples in his account include the 120-year total for the Vimshottari cycle, a fixed ordering for choghadiya, and a reference Ashtakavarga total. He also describes an identical-chart matching fixture that expects 28 out of 36 points in his implementation, not 36 out of 36, because its rules treat a shared nadi as a dosha.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →These are implementation-specific examples attributed to Govind, not universal test values for every Vedic astrology system. In particular, the 28/36 result encodes the matching rules his fixture applies. A useful test suite should document where each expected value comes from, which calculation conventions it assumes, and who reviewed the fixture. Otherwise a test can preserve a mistaken assumption just as effectively as it prevents a bug.
Test boundaries as well as canonical cases
Domain invariants are strongest when paired with cases that stress configuration boundaries: a new worker, a different zodiac mode, concurrent requests with different settings, and inputs near a calculation boundary. For an API that supports missing birth times, include cases that verify the response distinguishes lower-confidence calculations from results that require a precise time. These are engineering recommendations; Govind’s account does not establish that his service uses all of these additional cases.

Why the browser showed CORS instead of 429
Govind reports that quota middleware returned HTTP 429 before the middleware responsible for adding CORS headers ran. The server had a rate-limit response, but the browser could not expose it to the calling page because the response lacked the headers needed for the cross-origin request. The visible symptom was a CORS failure rather than a clear quota error.
The phrase “a 429 disguised as CORS” describes this reported middleware-ordering incident; it is not a general explanation for browser CORS errors, which can have other causes. The diagnostic point is to inspect the actual network response and the path that generated it, rather than treating the browser’s CORS message as proof that the request never reached the server.
Check short-circuit responses
- Inspect the status code and response headers for a request that exceeds quota.
- Trace which middleware creates the 429 and whether that early response receives the CORS headers the client needs.
- Check that rate-limit or quota metadata is present on the error path when the API promises it.
- Test both successful requests and middleware-generated failures from the browser origin the application actually uses.
A separate API reference, VedIntel’s, documents 429 quota errors and rate-limit headers. It is a different service and does not verify Govind’s account of GrahaAPI’s middleware ordering.

Return uncertainty instead of false precision
Govind says he made birth time optional and labeled which calculations were less reliable without it. That design avoids silently presenting precise house placements or dasha boundaries when an important input is absent.
The general API-design principle is to make input limitations visible in the response: distinguish calculations that can still be returned from those whose reliability depends on a missing value. This is a description of Govind’s design choice, not independent validation of the astrological interpretations or a claim that every calculation has the same dependency on birth time.
What the account establishes—and what it does not
Govind’s 2026 article reports that GrahaAPI had 237 REST endpoints across 23 modules and a free tier of 1,000 calls per month. Those are self-reported product figures in that account, not independently confirmed current specifications; endpoint counts and quotas can change. They are not necessary to the engineering lessons, but they illustrate why operational claims should be dated and attributed.

The account is most useful as a set of reported implementation lessons: reapply mutable settings where calculations begin, understand native-library state before adding concurrency, encode reviewed domain expectations in regression tests, preserve headers on early error responses, and expose uncertainty when inputs are incomplete. The separate Swiss Ephemeris API repository provides context for shared C state and locking, but neither it nor the separate VedIntel documentation independently verifies the GrahaAPI incidents or calculations.
