Make Your Website Easier for Google to Understand: An Entity Factsheet QA Checklist

A practical site-wide checklist for keeping organization and entity facts accurate, consistent, crawlable, and useful for Google Search.

An entity factsheet gives your team one verified reference for who your organization is, what it offers, and how its important entities relate. Use it to check that your website states those facts consistently in page copy, metadata, structured data, and public-facing profiles. For Google Search’s generative AI features, the practical work is sound SEO, useful content, accurate entity information, and crawlable pages—not a special AI markup format.

What an entity factsheet can—and cannot—do for AI search

Google says its generative AI search features build on existing Search systems and indexed web pages. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be eligible for those features, but meeting the requirements does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve it. See Google’s guidance on AI features in Search and its people-first content guidance.

A factsheet is an internal quality-control tool, not a ranking switch. It helps editors and site owners find conflicting names, descriptions, dates, locations, and relationships before those inconsistencies spread across pages. The guidance cited here is specific to Google Search; it does not establish equivalent requirements for other answer engines.

1. Establish verified facts before auditing pages

Create a controlled record for your organization and each important entity, such as a product, service, publication, or public-facing person. Keep evidence and the date each fact was last confirmed beside the fact. Mark disputed, unknown, and time-sensitive details explicitly rather than filling gaps with assumptions.

  • Identity: canonical public name, accepted variants, and entity type.
  • Official destination: the entity’s official website URL.
  • Description: a short, factual explanation of what the entity is or does.
  • Location: address or service area, when relevant.
  • People: founder, author, or spokesperson only when verified and relevant.
  • Offerings: official product and service names.
  • Relationships: how the organization, brands, products, and people relate.
  • Governance: source documents, last confirmation date, and the person responsible for updates.

Google’s entity-submission guidance emphasizes authoritative names and required properties. If required details are unavailable, do not submit an incomplete entity record simply to fill the template.

Use Knowledge Graph results as candidates, not proof

The Knowledge Graph Search API can search by text, identifiers, and entity types, and return fields such as name, description, official website, image, and relevance score. Inspect a result to determine whether it refers to the entity you mean; a result is not proof of inclusion or an endorsement.

2. Compare site pages and metadata against the factsheet

Audit the pages where readers and search systems are most likely to encounter an entity. Compare what each page visibly says with its metadata and the controlled factsheet.

  • Homepage and About page
  • Author and organization pages
  • Product and service pages
  • Contact and location details
  • High-traffic editorial pages that identify or describe an entity

Check spelling, accepted names, descriptions, locations, dates, ownership, and relationships. If an entity has more than one legitimate name, explain the relationship—for example, a former name or a product made by a particular organization—rather than switching names without context. Check title elements, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text as well as visible copy. Google’s title-link guidance and snippet guidance explain how those search elements are handled.

3. Check crawlability and indexing eligibility

Even accurate, useful information cannot be considered for Google Search features if Google cannot access or index the page. Check that intended pages are publicly reachable, not accidentally blocked, and meet Google’s technical requirements for indexing and snippet display.

  1. Review the page’s access and indexing settings for accidental blocks or exclusions.
  2. Use Search Console to investigate indexing and site-health issues.
  3. For JavaScript-rendered pages, confirm that important information is available to Google and follow Google’s JavaScript SEO basics.
  4. Keep the main content distinguishable from navigation and other page elements, and make pages work reliably across devices.

Prefer semantic HTML where practical: it helps convey page structure and also supports people using assistive technologies.

4. Review usefulness, accuracy, and trust

For each audited page, ask whether it has a clear purpose, answers the reader’s need, adds original value, and is accurate. Give readers appropriate context about the author or organization and cite sources where the subject calls for them. Avoid thin pages created mainly to target every possible query variation. Google says its systems can understand relevance without exact phrase matching; its helpful content guidance is a better editorial standard than producing near-duplicate pages for query variants.

If generative AI helped draft a page, manually verify factual claims and review its title, meta description, structured data, and image alt text—not just the body. Google advises: “When creating content for the web, focus on accuracy, quality, and relevance, especially when automatically generating it.” See Google’s guidance on generative AI content. Disclose how content was created when readers would reasonably want that context.

5. Validate structured data, but do not treat it as an AI shortcut

Check structured data against the current requirements for the relevant Search feature, and make sure it accurately reflects visible page content. Google states that structured data is not required for generative AI search and there is no special schema to add for it. Markup may still matter for eligibility for other Search features, which have their own rules; consult Google’s structured data introduction.

Google also says an llms.txt file neither helps nor harms Google Search visibility, and there is no requirement to split content into tiny chunks. Adding schema, an llms.txt file, or chunking pages is not a promise of inclusion in AI-generated results. See Google’s AI features guidance.

6. Prioritize findings and maintain the factsheet

Group audit findings into four complementary areas so the team can fix the right underlying problem rather than chase a single supposed AI tactic.

Area What to check Typical next step
Editorial trust and factual quality Purpose, accuracy, original value, sourcing, author or organization context Correct unsupported or outdated claims and improve the page for its reader.
Crawl and index eligibility Access, indexing issues, snippet eligibility, JavaScript-rendered content Resolve confirmed technical problems and recheck in Search Console.
Entity identity and completeness Names, official URLs, descriptions, required properties, and relationships Reconcile discrepancies against authoritative evidence and update the factsheet and affected pages.
Measurement and maintenance Search Console diagnostics, performance reporting, and ownership of changing facts Assign a responsible person and review the record when a material fact changes.

Use Search Console to diagnose crawl and indexing problems and to inspect Google’s generative AI performance report where available. The cited Google sources do not establish a universal visibility metric across all answer engines.

Investigate entity-matching warnings carefully

Google labels entity matching in its relevant feed guidance experimental. A matching warning can point to missing information or a near-match; it does not, by itself, prove that the proposed entity is false. Review the authoritative name and required properties, correct confirmed errors, and allow time for subsequent ingestion. See Google’s entity matching guidance.
