Make a new smart TV easier to use by setting up captions, menu guidance, readable display options, audio description, and simpler control of connected devices. The exact labels and shortcuts depend on your TV, remote, software, and streaming apps, so treat the menu paths below as examples and check your model’s manual when they differ.
1. Turn on captions or subtitles
Captions put dialogue and other audio information on screen. They can help viewers who are Deaf or hard of hearing, and anyone who prefers to read along. Captions must be available for the program or app you are watching; turning on a TV-wide preference cannot add captions to content that does not provide them.

Look in your TV’s Accessibility settings for Captions or Subtitles. On Roku devices, closed captions are available through Accessibility settings; Roku also explains the feature and its options on its accessibility page. A streaming app may have its own caption control, so check the playback menu if captions do not appear after changing the device setting.
2. Make menus easier to navigate
If navigating settings or menus is difficult, try spoken guidance. This reads on-screen menu items and controls aloud; it is different from narration of a show’s visual action, which is covered in the audio-description section below. A remote shortcut can make guidance easier to switch on or off, but the button and available options vary by model.

- Samsung: Samsung UK says some Smart Remotes open Accessibility Shortcuts when you press and hold the mute button. Options can include Voice Guide, captions, magnification, and other visual settings. The shortcut and feature list depend on the TV and remote. See Samsung’s accessibility instructions.
- LG: LG documents Audio Guidance controls through settings or a remote shortcut, with menu paths that vary by TV generation. See LG’s Audio Guidance instructions.
Enable spoken guidance only if it suits the person using the TV; it can announce routine menu navigation as well as settings. If the TV’s shortcut is unclear, search its Accessibility menu or consult the current support page for the exact model.
3. Make text and screen elements easier to see
For small or hard-to-read menus, check Accessibility for text-size, magnification, contrast, or other visual options. Availability and names differ between TVs. Samsung, for example, lists magnification and visual options among the features that may appear in its Accessibility Shortcuts menu; the actual selection depends on the TV and remote. Apple TV 4K is an example of a separate streaming device with accessibility options including text display controls, Switch Control, and Tap to Navigate. Adjust one setting at a time, then check the home screen and an app. A change that helps with menus may not affect text inside every app or video. If you use an external streaming box, its accessibility controls may be separate from the television’s.

Audio description adds spoken narration of important on-screen visuals and actions. It is intended for viewers who benefit from hearing visual information, and it differs from spoken menu guidance: one describes program content, while the other reads the TV interface. The show or service must provide an audio-description track, and your TV or streaming device must support the feature.

On supported LG TVs, look in Accessibility settings for Audio Description; LG’s instructions note that controls and paths vary by generation: LG’s Audio Description guide. Sony likewise describes Audio Description as narration of on-screen visuals and actions, with available controls depending on the model and remote: Sony’s BRAVIA instructions. If narration does not start, check both the device’s accessibility setting and the audio options for the program.

HDMI-CEC lets compatible devices send some control commands to each other over HDMI. When supported and enabled, it can reduce the need to use separate remotes for basic tasks such as controlling a connected device or coordinating power. The setting may be called HDMI-CEC or use a brand-specific name: Roku’s examples include Samsung Anynet+, LG SIMPLINK, and Sony BRAVIA Sync. Menu locations and supported commands vary, so follow the instructions for your TV and connected device. Roku’s HDMI-CEC and ARC guide describes the setup examples.

CEC is not a universal replacement for every device remote. Roku Support cautions: “CEC does not allow control of all aspects of every device.” Some functions may still require the original remote. ARC is a related HDMI feature that can route TV audio to a connected sound system; confirm that you are using the appropriate ARC-labeled port and that both devices support it.

Some compatible voice remotes can handle TV power or volume as well as voice commands. Roku says its Voice Remote Pro supports hands-free voice commands, but TV-control functions vary and HDMI-CEC may need to be enabled. Check compatibility with your exact TV before relying on one; setup details are in Roku’s TV-control instructions. An extra remote is optional, not a prerequisite for using the accessibility settings or HDMI-CEC.

Use the settings that fit your household
Start with the changes that solve a real problem: captions for dialogue, guidance for menu navigation, visual adjustments for readability, audio description for narrated visuals, or HDMI-CEC for fewer basic remote handoffs. Feature names, shortcuts, and availability depend on the model, remote, software version, and content. If a setting is missing, check the TV’s manual or the manufacturer’s current support page rather than assuming every smart TV offers the same controls.
