First identify which display is too bright: the Always On Display (AOD) that remains visible while the screen is otherwise off, or the full lock screen that appears after you wake the phone. They use different controls. Menu names and options vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Dim the regular lock screen
If the phone is awake and showing the full lock screen, lower the screen brightness using the brightness slider in the Quick panel. You can also open Settings > Display and adjust brightness there. Samsung notes that high display brightness can reduce battery life, but does not give a specific amount.

Stop brightness changing with the room
If the screen keeps getting brighter or dimmer as surrounding light changes, check Adaptive brightness in Display settings. Samsung describes this setting as adjusting screen brightness according to ambient light; turn it off if you want to control the level yourself. The exact label or location can vary by device.
Adjust Always On Display brightness
If the screen is otherwise off but the clock or other AOD content looks too bright, open Settings and search for Always On Display. On devices with the relevant menu, use Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display.

One UI 6.0 and earlier
Samsung US guidance for Galaxy devices running One UI 6.0 or earlier describes turning off Auto brightness in AOD settings and adjusting brightness manually. On supported devices, you may also be able to double-tap the AOD clock to bring up a brightness adjustment. The available controls depend on the phone.
One UI 6.1 and later
Samsung says the manual AOD adjustment described in its earlier-version instructions is unavailable on One UI 6.1 and later. If you cannot find a slider, check the AOD options on your device rather than assuming it is hidden under another universal menu path. Samsung’s support material cautions that options vary by model and software version.

Make AOD appear for less time
If your Galaxy offers display-mode or scheduling options, you may be able to show AOD only when tapped or during a chosen schedule instead of leaving it visible continuously. Look in the Always On Display settings for choices such as tap-to-show or scheduling; labels and availability differ across devices. Samsung regional guidance also describes automatic brightness behavior that can vary with lighting.

When the setting is missing
- Confirm whether you mean the awake lock screen or AOD; the regular Display brightness control does not necessarily change AOD brightness.
- Search Settings for “Always On Display” and check the phone’s One UI version before following version-specific steps.
- Compare the options actually shown on your device, because Samsung says AOD settings vary by model and software version.
- Community posts mention LockStar as a possible route on some setups, but this is user-reported, device-specific guidance—not a universal Samsung setting or official instruction.
Samsung’s guidance is published by regional support sites, and menu wording can also differ by region or carrier. For the lit lock screen, use the ordinary display brightness control; for AOD, use only the options available for that device and version.
