Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo make a Galaxy phone act when you leave home, create a routine in Settings > Modes and Routines > Routines > Add. Choose a departure-related condition under If, add phone actions under Then, and save. For compatible smart-home devices, create a separate routine in SmartThings instead. Menu names, triggers, and availability can vary by Galaxy model, software version, app version, and region.
Choose the right kind of routine
| Use | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Modes and Routines | Automating settings or actions on the phone itself | Whether your phone offers the departure trigger and actions you want |
| SmartThings | Automating supported connected-home devices, such as lights or televisions | Location setup, device compatibility, and the controls available in the app |
You do not need SmartThings just to automate a phone setting. Use it when the routine needs to control connected devices that SmartThings supports.

Create a leaving-home routine on your Galaxy
- Open Settings > Modes and Routines, then select the Routines tab.
- Tap Add to make a custom routine. Samsung also allows recommended routines to be customized.
- Under If, select a departure-related condition offered on your device. Available triggers can differ, so use the options shown on your phone rather than assuming a particular location trigger is present.
- Under Then, choose the phone action or actions you want the routine to perform. Examples might include changing a phone setting or launching an action, but the choices depend on your software version.
- Save the routine with a name, icon, and color.
For example, you could name a routine “Leaving home,” choose an available condition that represents leaving, and add an available phone action. These are setup examples, not a guarantee that every Galaxy exposes the same trigger or actions. Samsung notes that Modes and Routines availability varies by device and software version. See Samsung’s Modes and Routines guide.

Automate supported home devices with SmartThings
If you want a home device to respond—such as turning off a compatible light—set up a SmartThings routine. In Samsung’s US guide, the path starts at Favorites > Add > Create routine. Add a departure condition under If, choose supported device actions under Then, test the actions, and save. App menus can vary by version and region; follow the labels shown in your app. Samsung’s instructions are at Use automations in SmartThings.

Check location and device support
SmartThings locations can have a geolocation, and Linked places can be used for routines that run when someone arrives or leaves. Samsung describes the location options in its guide to managing locations and rooms. SmartThings also has a Get your location from this phone setting for location-based automations and showing other members whether you are home; see SmartThings app settings.
A device may not appear in SmartThings if it does not support automation. The available controls depend on the device and its manufacturer’s policy. If you cannot select a desired device action, check its compatibility and the options exposed in SmartThings.

Edit or troubleshoot the routine
- Can’t find Modes and Routines? Check whether your Galaxy model and software version support it; Samsung cautions that availability varies.
- Can’t find a departure trigger? Review the conditions offered under If on your phone or in SmartThings. The available choices are not guaranteed to be identical across devices and app versions.
- A home device is missing? It may not support SmartThings automation, or its manufacturer may limit available controls.
- Need to change the setup? Open the Routines tab in Modes and Routines, select the routine, and edit it.
Samsung’s support pages do not establish a universal trigger timing or guarantee identical background behavior across devices. Treat the options and behavior shown on your own phone and in your SmartThings app as the applicable ones.
