Yes. A computer and a digital audio workstation (DAW) are enough to start making beats: you can program drums, play virtual instruments, arrange parts, add effects, mix, and export a finished audio file. You can begin with your mouse and keyboard and the sounds included with your software; a controller or recording interface is optional unless your workflow calls for one.
What a DAW does
A DAW is the software where you build and shape a track. It can sequence MIDI notes, trigger software instruments and samples, arrange parts on a timeline or in clips, process sounds with effects, balance tracks, and export audio. Focusrite’s overview explains the role of a DAW in recording, editing, and producing audio: What is a DAW?

That means you do not need a separate drum machine or a complete studio setup to begin. The computer runs the instruments and production tools; a controller can make input more tactile, but it does not replace the DAW.

Optional: a MIDI keyboard or pad controller
A MIDI controller sends note or performance information to software instruments. A keyboard can be useful for melodies and chords; pads can make drum parts easier to play. You can also enter notes and patterns with a mouse and computer keyboard. If buying a controller, check that it sends standard MIDI and is compatible with your chosen DAW. Image-Line documents support for USB or MIDI keyboards and pad controllers with standard MIDI: FL Studio product information.
Conditional: an audio interface
An interface is for bringing external sound—such as a microphone or guitar—into the computer. It is not a prerequisite for programming MIDI or using virtual instruments. If you only plan to make beats with software sounds, you can start without one.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Computer compatibility: Check the software’s current requirements for your operating system, processor, memory, and storage before installing.
- Workflow: If you like building repeating patterns, look for comfortable step-sequencing and pattern tools. If you prefer arranging sections across a song, check its clip and timeline workflow.
- Sounds and sampling: Compare included instruments, drum sounds, sound packs, and how easily you can import and work with samples.
- Recording: If vocals or instruments are part of your plan, confirm that the software supports audio recording and consider whether you need an interface.
- Access and project limits: Trials and bundled licenses differ. Check whether a trial can save, reopen, and export projects, and whether a bundled license has an expiry or hardware requirement.
- Export and portability: Confirm the audio formats you need and consider whether you will be able to reopen projects on another computer or in another DAW.
Examples of different entry points
| Software | What the cited official information establishes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| FL Studio | Image-Line lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 10.15 or later, and says the software works on its own. Its trial offers the full feature set and full-quality exports without a time limit. | In the trial, saved projects cannot be reopened until a license is purchased. Check the current details on Image-Line’s product page and download page. |
| Ableton Live Lite | Live Lite is bundled with certain hardware products and apps, is not sold separately, and its license does not expire. Live offers Session View for flexible clip-based composition and performance and Arrangement View for timeline-based work. | The cited system-requirements page lists 8 GB RAM for Live 12 Lite; check the full, current requirements and availability at Live Lite and Ableton’s Live overview. |
| Serato Studio | The download page describes sample, drum, and instrument decks; sound packs; audio recording; VST/AU support; and Scene and Song composers. It reports version 2.5.0, including macOS Tahoe support and native control for AlphaTheta SLAB. | Version and operating-system compatibility can change; confirm current requirements on the download page. |
| Maschine 3 | Native Instruments says the software works without hardware, although compatible controllers are available. | See Maschine 3 for current product information. |
| MPC Beats | Akai presents MPC Beats as free beat-making software and mentions MIDI note entry and recording. | The cited page provides limited feature detail; check current information directly at Akai’s MPC Beats page. |
Check computer requirements before you install
Requirements belong to a particular product and version; one DAW’s figures do not predict whether another will run well. The vendor-published specifications below were accessed on October 7, 2026, and are not independent performance benchmarks.
| Product and version context | Published figures | What they mean |
|---|---|---|
| FL Studio, current requirements listed by Image-Line | 4 GB RAM and 4 GB free disk space for Windows and macOS; Image-Line suggests a quad-core CPU, 8–16 GB RAM, and an SSD for smoother performance. | These are Image-Line’s listed requirements and recommendation for FL Studio, not a universal minimum for beat-making software. Source. |
| Ableton Live 12 Lite | 8 GB RAM listed. | This applies to Live 12 Lite’s listed requirements; consult Ableton’s page for the corresponding operating-system and processor requirements. Source. |
Because software requirements and versions change, check the maker’s live requirements page for the specific edition you intend to install. If a project strains your computer, simplify the session and consult that DAW’s setup guidance rather than assuming a particular machine will handle every project.

A practical first beat workflow
- Install a DAW that supports your computer. Review the version-specific requirements first, then create a new project.
- Build a drum pattern. Use a built-in drum instrument or a sample, then program a simple rhythm with the mouse, keyboard, or an optional MIDI controller.
- Add a musical part. Use a virtual bass or melodic instrument and enter or play notes that fit the drum pattern.
- Arrange the idea. Repeat the core parts and introduce changes so the track has distinct sections rather than one unchanging loop.
- Balance and shape the sounds. Adjust track levels and use effects available in the DAW where they help the parts work together.
- Save the project and export audio. Save regularly so you can return to the editable session, then export a listening file using the format your intended use requires.
Bundled sounds are enough for a first session. Before releasing music that uses a sample or loop, check the license for that specific sound pack or source and keep a copy of its terms. A DAW’s ability to load or export a sound does not establish that every sound is cleared for every commercial use.
