The change is reversible, and you can return to 1x if the motion feels too abrupt.
What changing animation speed actually does
Android’s animation scales control how long certain interface animations take. At 0.5x, affected duration-based animations run in half their configured time, so you spend less time watching those transitions. This is why the phone may feel quicker even though its hardware is doing the same work.

Android Developers’ Developer Options guide says, in the context of Window animation scale, “A lower scale results in a faster speed.” That refers to animation playback, not overall device performance. The documentation does not establish that changing these settings makes apps calculate, load, or download faster.

Android provides separate controls rather than one universal animation-speed switch. Their effects depend on the type of animation being used.

Android Developers’ Settings.Global API reference lists 1.0 as the default Animator duration scale. It says setting that scale to 0.0 causes Animator-based animations to end immediately. The same reference describes Window animation scale and Transition animation scale as separate settings for window and activity-transition animations. Not every app animation necessarily responds identically: the controls apply to the animation types and frameworks described in Android’s documentation.
Choose between 1x, 0.5x and 0x

Android’s documentation describes what the settings do, not which one feels best for every person. Start with 0.5x if you want to preserve some motion. Zero is a more abrupt change, not simply a slightly faster version of 0.5x.

How to set Android animation scales to 0.5x
- Open Developer options. The exact path and label vary by manufacturer, model, and Android build; look in your phone’s Settings for Developer options.
- Find the animation controls. In Android’s official guide, Window animation scale and Transition animation scale are under the Drawing options in Developer options. If your device also shows Animator duration scale, it is a separate control.
- Change the scales you want to adjust to 0.5x. Use the setting’s value list, and leave unrelated Developer options unchanged.
- Use the phone normally. If the shorter motion feels uncomfortable or too abrupt, return the changed controls to 1x.
The official guide identifies the Drawing section for the window and transition controls, but there is no single navigation path established here for every Android device. If a setting is missing or named differently, consult the device maker’s instructions for your model rather than changing other developer settings.
What this adjustment cannot tell you
Shorter animation time can reduce the time spent watching supported transitions, but it is not a performance upgrade. Android’s documentation does not quantify how much faster a person will perceive a phone at 0.5x, nor does it establish a battery saving or a universal accessibility benefit. It also does not show that animation scales increase computation speed or refresh rate; refresh behavior depends on device support and system and app signals, as Android explains in its adaptive refresh rate guidance.
