Colorlib Error 404 V13 is a free HTML/CSS template for a bold, red-and-type-led “page not found” screen. It replaces an illustration with a red exclamation mark and includes a single “Back to homepage” button. Downloading the template gives you the page design—not the server configuration needed to return it with a genuine HTTP 404 status.
What Colorlib Error 404 V13 includes
Colorlib describes V13 as a loud, high-contrast design. Its visual centerpiece is a red exclamation mark rather than an image, so there is no illustration file to host or replace. Chango supplies the display typography, while Montserrat is used for body copy. The page pairs a standard explanation with one route back to the homepage. Colorlib’s roundup recommends fitting a downloaded design to the site and then configuring the server to serve it. A standalone template does not automatically become your site’s error page.

Choose an installation route

The plugin is a separate WordPress option, not an automatic installer for the standalone V13 download. Its project documentation and changelog list WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.4 as minimum requirements and GPLv3-or-later licensing. If you need to edit the heading in the plugin, select another template. The documentation describes version 1.1.0 and gives a changelog date as “10.08.2026”; it does not make the date convention explicit.
Configure and verify the HTTP 404 response
- Prepare the page. Edit the downloaded HTML/CSS, or configure the WordPress plugin. Update the homepage link and adapt the branding and copy.
- Connect the page to missing URLs. Configure your server or framework’s not-found handling to serve the page. For WordPress, follow the plugin’s setup and confirm the template is active.
- Test a URL that does not exist. Open a deliberately nonexistent path on your site and inspect the response status using your browser’s developer tools or another HTTP inspection method.
- Confirm the result is HTTP 404. A page that looks like an error is not enough: the missing URL should return 404, not a successful response such as 200 or a redirect. Correct the server or framework configuration if it does not.
Colorlib’s plugin documentation says the plugin returns a real 404 status and adds a noindex tag. That documented behavior applies to the plugin; do not assume a separately installed HTML template does the same. Verify the status on your own site after configuration.

What the design can—and cannot—promise
V13 provides a recognizable error-page design and a direct route back to the homepage. Colorlib’s materials do not establish a measured improvement in conversions, performance, or visitor retention, so treat those as possible goals rather than guaranteed outcomes. The practical test is whether visitors can recover from a broken link and whether your site responds with the correct status.
