If The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask feels delayed or choppy on Switch, first identify which symptom you mean: controller input lag, online network latency, or local visual stutter. They have different causes, and Nintendo has not published a Majora’s Mask-specific frame-rate or input-latency measurement. Start by updating the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online app, then compare controllers and note when the stutter occurs; use network troubleshooting only for symptoms tied to an online connection.
Confirm which version and symptom you have
On Switch, Majora’s Mask is played through the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online app. Nintendo announced its availability to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members on February 25, 2022; the original Nintendo 64 release was in 2000. Nintendo’s announcement and its N64 collection page describe access and the collection.

Before changing settings, check whether the problem is delayed button response, a visual hitch or slowdown, or a connection interruption. Note whether it happens only in Majora’s Mask or also in other Switch games, which controller you are using, and whether it recurs after restarting the game. These comparisons can help narrow down the symptom; they are not Nintendo-published diagnostic tests.
Recommended Free Tools
- Input lag: A button press appears to register late or incorrectly.
- Local stutter or frame drops: The picture appears uneven or briefly pauses, even without an online interaction.
- Network latency: Delays or interruptions occur during online activity and may be tied to the connection.
Update the N64 app first
Nintendo’s guidance for button-response problems with the Nintendo 64 Controller tells players to check for available updates to Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online before starting a game from the library. From the Switch HOME Menu, highlight the N64 app, press the + button, choose Software Update, then select Via the Internet if that option is available. You can also open the app’s page in Nintendo eShop and check for an update.

Nintendo’s support article addresses button response and input lag with the Nintendo 64 Controller; it does not establish that an app update will resolve every kind of lag or visual stutter. Nintendo’s controller troubleshooting guidance is the applicable support reference.
Troubleshoot controller input lag
Check whether the controller is the variable
If you use Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 Controller for Switch, check the rear label for model HAC-043. Nintendo’s support guidance specifically identifies that model. If you have another compatible controller already, compare the same action with it. A difference may help isolate whether the issue follows one controller or accessory; it is not proof that another controller will eliminate emulation latency.

The N64 collection supports control customization, and the N64-style controller is optional. Buying one is not an established fix for game-wide input delay or frame drops. If one button or one controller consistently fails to respond correctly, use Nintendo’s support article to follow its current troubleshooting and service route rather than assuming the game itself is at fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the symptom specific
If every button feels delayed only in Majora’s Mask, record that distinction along with the controller model and whether the app is updated. If the problem also appears across other games, that comparison points beyond this one N64 title, though it does not identify a cause by itself. Nintendo’s published materials do not provide a numerical input-latency result for Majora’s Mask on Switch.

What to do about local stutter or frame drops
Nintendo cautions that “There are some differences in game performance and presentation as compared to the original versions of these games.” This is a general statement about the N64 collection, not a measurement of Majora’s Mask, a particular scene, or a known current defect. Nintendo’s cited product and support pages do not give this game’s frame rate or frame-pacing results.
For a useful record, note where the hitch occurs, what is happening on screen, whether it repeats after relaunching the app, and whether the app is updated. These observations may help distinguish a recurring game-specific symptom from an isolated interruption, but they are not proven fixes. Avoid treating a network change or a different controller as a remedy for local rendering stutter without evidence that it affects the symptom.

Use network troubleshooting only for online symptoms
Nintendo defines network latency as delays in sending and receiving data over a network. If you are seeing connection instability or delayed online interactions, test the Switch’s internet connection and check for weak wireless signal, interference, slow internet service, or a network device that is unresponsive. Make one change at a time and retest so you can tell whether the connection symptom changes.
Nintendo’s network guidance is for online latency, not local emulation performance in single-player Majora’s Mask. A stronger Wi-Fi signal or different network setup should not be presented as a fix for a visual frame drop that occurs offline. See Nintendo’s guidance for latency while playing online.

Do not apply the NES low-latency setting to N64
Nintendo documents a low-latency mode for NES – Nintendo Classics, where it can reduce input delay during online play and may affect audio and visuals. That instruction is scoped to NES software; Nintendo’s cited materials do not establish that the setting applies to Majora’s Mask in the N64 app. See Nintendo’s NES low-latency instructions for their stated scope.
