Majora’s Mask on Nintendo Switch Online is the Nintendo 64 release; Majora’s Mask 3D is a separate Nintendo 3DS-family remaster. The 3DS edition adds refreshed visuals and platform-specific features such as touch-screen access, an alarm-enabled quest notebook, hints, and fishing holes. The Switch option is the more direct way to play the N64 version, but requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Nintendo added Majora’s Mask to the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online app on 25 February 2022. That library entry is based on the Nintendo 64 game, originally released in 2000, rather than the 3DS remaster. Nintendo describes Majora’s Mask 3D, released for the Nintendo 3DS family on 13 February 2015, as a full remaster.

So the practical choice is between the N64 release as offered through Switch Online and a remake with visual and interface changes—not two editions of the same remaster. Nintendo’s pages do not provide a complete technical comparison of the Switch and 3DS versions.

Nintendo says the 3DS edition’s visuals were overhauled and improved. That is the publisher’s description; the cited product information does not provide a measured resolution or a side-by-side technical analysis.

Touch-screen access
The 3DS touch screen provides convenient access to items and the map. This is a platform-specific interface feature, rather than a change available in the Switch Online N64 app.

Hints and fishing
Majora’s Mask 3D adds Sheikah Stone hints and fishing holes. These are among the remaster’s documented additions to the original game.

Nintendo says you can look around using the 3DS system’s motion controls. A Circle Pad Pro can be used with the original Nintendo 3DS, while the New Nintendo 3DS offers camera control through its C Stick.

How does the Switch Online version differ in play?
The Switch app presents the Nintendo 64 game through Nintendo’s service, with customizable controls listed for the Nintendo 64 Classics library. Nintendo also cautions that performance and presentation of Nintendo 64 Classics may differ from their original versions. That general notice does not establish a specific visual improvement, performance problem, or exact emulation change for Majora’s Mask.
The 3DS edition’s touch-screen tools, revised notebook, hints, fishing holes, and camera options are documented remaster features. Nintendo’s cited Switch materials do not list equivalent game-specific additions for the N64 app entry.

On Nintendo Switch
You need a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to access Majora’s Mask in the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online app. Online features require internet access, and availability varies by country. Check Nintendo’s game announcement and Nintendo Switch Online service FAQ for service requirements and regional details.

Nintendo ended new purchases through the Nintendo 3DS family eShop on 27 March 2023, so a physical cartridge is the relevant purchase route to look for. Which version should you choose?
- Choose Switch Online if you want the Nintendo 64 release on Switch and already have, or are willing to get, the required Expansion Pack membership.
- Choose the 3DS remaster if you want its documented visual refresh, touch-screen conveniences, notebook alarms, hints, fishing holes, and additional camera controls—and can access a 3DS copy.
- Do not treat the Switch entry as the 3DS remaster. They are distinct releases, and Nintendo’s available pages do not establish a complete technical comparison between them.
