Deku Link flies briefly and hops across water, Goron Link rolls and pounds the ground, and Zora Link swims swiftly underwater and can create a magic-powered barrier. The Nintendo 3DS remake has a different item and camera interface, so do not assume the N64 button mappings apply.
How to equip a transformation mask in the N64 version
- Press START to open the subscreen.
- Open the Masks Subscreen and move the cursor to the mask you want.
- Set the mask to one of the C Buttons.
- Return to the game and press that C Button to put on the mask.
Nintendo’s N64 manual distinguishes ordinary masks from masks that change Link’s shape and give him new abilities. The blue Action Icon shows which action is currently available. The Control Stick moves Link, but button functions can change with his form and situation, so use the controls below for the relevant transformation.

Deku Link: fly briefly and hop across water
Launch from a Deku Flower
- Stand on a Deku Flower.
- Hold A, then release it to launch into the air.
- Press B while flying to drop Deku Nuts.
The flight is limited; the flower launch is not sustained flight. Deku Link can also spin to attack and shoot bubbles. Hold B and release to fire a larger bubble. Bubble attacks use magic.
Cross water with short hops
Deku Link can hop across water up to five times. If you attempt another hop, he sinks and returns to the point where he started. Fire and falls from great heights are also dangerous to him.

Goron Link: roll, punch, and pound
Start a roll and manage its limits
Hold A and tilt the Control Stick to curl up and begin rolling. If Goron Link travels a short distance without hitting an obstacle, spikes emerge and he continues rolling without needing forward input. This spiked rolling uses magic. An obstacle can interrupt the run, so a clear path and sufficient magic matter when using it for distance.
Attack at close range
- Punch: Press B with good timing to perform up to three consecutive punches.
- Ground pound: While curled, hold A and press B. The impact can damage nearby enemies.
- Rolling collision: Goron Link’s armored body can roll into enemies.
His weight prevents him from traveling through deep water, and the manual warns that he cannot handle falls from heights.

Zora Link: swim, dive, and attack with fins
Move through water
- Swim swiftly underwater: Press A and steer with the Control Stick.
- Dive from the surface: Press B.
- Move along the sea floor: Once there, Zora Link can move as if on land.
Use punches and fin attacks
Press B with good timing for up to three punches. To launch a fin from each arm, hold B and release. Z-targeting can home the fins in on an enemy, but Zora Link cannot perform other attacks while the fins are flying.

Create an electric barrier
While swimming, press R, or hold R and B, to surround Zora Link with an electric current. The barrier consumes magic. The manual also identifies fire and ice as weaknesses.

How N64 and 3DS controls differ
The detailed button instructions above are for the Nintendo 64 manual. In Majora’s Mask 3D, Nintendo describes using assigned buttons or tapping the relevant touch-screen slot to use items and put on masks. The remake also supports motion controls for looking around; its official page says the C Stick controls the camera on New Nintendo 3DS systems. The 3DS manual notes that the Circle Pad Pro’s right Circle Pad can be used to look around.

Nintendo’s 3DS materials confirm the three transformations and their broad roles—Deku flight, Goron rolling, and Zora swimming—but the cited manual information does not establish form-by-form 3DS button mappings. Check the control prompts in your game rather than transferring the N64 inputs directly.
