Major Annual Meteor Showers: 2026 Dates and Viewing Guide

The Orionids peak October 21–22, 2026. Find upcoming shower dates through the 2027 Perseids, plus guidance for choosing a dark, comfortable viewing window.

The next major meteor shower peak is the Orionids on the night of October 21–22, 2026. The American Meteor Society (AMS) lists a 74%-illuminated Moon that will interfere while it is above the horizon, so conditions may be less favorable for faint meteors. After that come the Southern Taurids on November 4–5 and the Northern Taurids on November 11–12. Peak dates are a starting point, not a promise of a particular number of meteors: the best local time depends on the shower, your location, moonlight, darkness and weather.

Upcoming meteor shower peaks from October 2026

These dates and observing notes reflect the AMS 2026/2027 calendar checked on October 4, 2026. Peak-night dates are local-night ranges; a listed peak does not guarantee the same viewing conditions everywhere. Check the AMS meteor shower calendar or the International Meteor Organization calendar again close to your observing date.

Shower Next peak night Active period What to know
Orionids October 21–22, 2026 October 2–November 7, 2026 The Moon is listed at 74% illumination and can obscure fainter meteors while above the horizon. A normal maximum produces 10–20 shower members per hour, according to the AMS.
Southern Taurids November 4–5, 2026 September 20–November 20, 2026 The AMS describes this as a fireball-rich shower. The Moon is listed at 25% illumination on peak night.
Northern Taurids November 11–12, 2026 October 20–December 10, 2026 The Moon is listed at 4% illumination. Overlapping Taurid activity can sometimes increase fireball reports.
Leonids November 16–17, 2026 November 6–30, 2026 The Moon is listed at 39% illumination and may hide fainter meteors. Rare meteor storms are not the expected display.
Geminids December 13–14, 2026 December 4–17, 2026 Usually the strongest shower of the year. The Moon is listed at 15% illumination, and Gemini is well placed from about 22:00, making this a good option for observers who cannot stay out until dawn.
Ursids December 21–22, 2026 December 17–26, 2026 A Northern Hemisphere shower, typically about 5–10 meteors per hour near maximum. The Moon is listed at 89% illumination and is expected to interfere.
Quadrantids January 3–4, 2027 December 28, 2026–January 12, 2027 The maximum lasts about six hours. The AMS predicts a peak near 03:30 UT on January 4, favoring Europe and western Asia. The Moon is listed at 18% illumination.
Lyrids April 21–22, 2027 April 14–30, 2027 The Moon is full on peak night, likely obscuring fainter meteors.
Eta Aquariids May 5–6, 2027 April 19–May 28, 2027 The Moon is listed at 2% illumination. The shower is stronger from southern tropical latitudes; north of the equator, typical rates are 10–30 per hour just before dawn.
Southern Delta Aquariids July 30–31, 2027 July 12–August 23, 2027 Usually faint and better placed in the southern tropics. The Moon is listed at 14% illumination.
Perseids August 12–13, 2027 July 17–August 24, 2027 A popular Northern Hemisphere shower. The AMS gives a typical maximum of 30–50 shower members per hour from rural locations; the Moon is listed at 79% illumination and can hide fainter meteors.

Major annual meteor showers and their 2026 peak dates

The AMS calendar-year 2026 list shows when the main annual showers reach their listed peaks. These are calendar-year peak dates, not fixed best viewing hours; the AMS notes that its annual-table time indicates when the radiant is best positioned, and lunar conditions change from year to year.

Shower Active period in 2026 Peak date in 2026 Viewing context
Quadrantids December 26–January 16 January 3 Short maximum; best placed in the Northern Hemisphere.
Lyrids April 17–26 April 22 Northern Hemisphere favored. Its sharp peak can disappoint observers who miss the brief maximum.
Eta Aquariids April 15–May 27 May 5 Best rates from southern tropical latitudes; north of the equator, often 10–30 meteors per hour just before dawn.
Southern Delta Aquariids July 19–August 13 July 30 Better placed farther south; meteors are fainter and rates lower north of the equator.
Perseids July 17–August 29 August 13 Popular in the Northern Hemisphere; a normal rural maximum is 30–50 shower members per hour.
Orionids October 2–November 12 October 23 Usually medium strength, with 10–20 meteors per hour in a normal year.
Leonids October 28–December 7 November 18 Usually modest. Exceptional meteor storms are rare, not the expected display.
Geminids December 1–21 December 14 Usually among the year’s strongest showers and can be worthwhile before midnight.

How to choose the best time and place

A shower’s peak date tells you when activity is expected to be highest overall; it does not identify a universally best local hour. Compare the peak timing and its duration, your latitude, the Moon’s position and brightness, and the darkness and weather at your site. A bright Moon can wash out faint meteors even on a shower’s peak night.

Celestron Cometron 7x50mm Astronomy Binoculars
  • EASY-TO-USE ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS FOR BEGINNERS: Cometron 7x50 binoculars are an easy, affordable way to learn the night sky and get started with astronomy.
  • 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
  • 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
  • GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
  • TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.
  • Favor a dark, open location. Move away from artificial lights when practical and choose a site with a broad, unobstructed view. Darker skies make faint meteors easier to see.
  • Check moonrise and moonset for your location. If possible, observe when the Moon is below the horizon. If it is up, look away from its glare rather than toward it.
  • Account for latitude. The Eta Aquariids and Southern Delta Aquariids are better placed for southern tropical or southern observers; several other showers are especially favorable in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Look broadly, not at the radiant. Meteors can appear across the sky, so face a wide section of it instead of staring at the point from which the shower seems to radiate. NASA JPL advises against binoculars and telescopes for casual meteor watching because their narrower fields show less sky.
  • Give your eyes time to adjust. NASA’s 2026 Perseid guidance recommends 20–30 minutes for dark adaptation. Avoid bright phone screens; NASA JPL suggests using red light if you need a light source.
  • Plan to wait comfortably. Allow at least half an hour, dress for overnight temperatures, and use a reclining chair or ground pad, blanket or sleeping bag so you can keep looking up. As NASA JPL puts it, “A reclining chair or ground pad will make it far more comfortable to keep your gaze on the night sky.”

What meteor rates mean in practice

Hourly rates are reference figures for shower conditions or observer circumstances, not a forecast of what one person will count. Your actual view changes with darkness, moonlight, timing, location and weather. For example, the AMS’s typical Perseid maximum of 30–50 shower members per hour is specifically for rural locations; the Orionid figure of 10–20 per hour describes a normal-year maximum. Both are shower members, not a guaranteed personal tally.

Season and hemisphere also matter. The AMS gives the Eta Aquariids a typical 10–30 meteors per hour north of the equator just before dawn, while noting stronger rates from southern tropical latitudes. For the Ursids, about 5–10 per hour is typical near maximum, but the 2026 peak coincides with a bright Moon. For a short, sharply timed shower such as the Quadrantids, missing the brief maximum can matter more than for a longer active period.
