Mailchimp may suit a small business that wants email marketing with several plan tiers, but its value depends on your contact count, sending volume, and workflow needs. The Free plan is capped at 250 contacts and 500 monthly sends; paid plans raise the send allowance according to the contact tier you select. Mailchimp’s published limits and billing rules make it possible to compare plans, but they do not establish how well campaigns will perform or whether Mailchimp is better than a competitor.
Mailchimp plans at a glance
Mailchimp offers Free, Essentials, Standard, and Premium Marketing plans. The Free plan has the clearest published caps; paid-plan pricing varies with the contact tier, currency, and offers shown at the time of purchase. The figures below are vendor-stated terms on Mailchimp’s Marketing pricing page, accessed in 2026.

| Plan | Monthly email allowance | Published distinctions |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 500 sends per month and 250 sends per day; up to 250 contacts | One seat and one audience |
| Essentials | 10 times the selected maximum contact count per month | Feature and support level differs from higher tiers; check the live plan page for the specific tier and current price. |
| Standard | 12 times the selected maximum contact count per month | Feature and support level differs by plan; check the live plan page for current inclusions and price. |
| Premium | 15 times the selected maximum contact count per month | Mailchimp positions this as its most advanced tier and lists priority support. |
The multipliers are monthly send allowances tied to the selected contact maximum, not unlimited email. Mailchimp’s plan page also differentiates tiers by seats, audiences, role access, templates, reports, and dynamic content; confirm the features available in your account and region before choosing.

How much does Mailchimp cost?
There is no single durable price for every paid Mailchimp account in the available plan information. The price depends on the contact tier you select, currency, and any current offer. A teaser starting price should not be treated as the amount a customer with a larger list will pay.
#1 Best Overall
- Estimate your billable contact count using Mailchimp’s counting rules below.
- Enter that count on the Marketing pricing page and compare the available plan tiers and their send allowances.
- Review the checkout terms and your account’s billing page for the actual price, selected contact maximum, and any applicable offer before subscribing.
What counts toward your contact limit?
Mailchimp says a person present in multiple audiences is counted multiple times toward the plan contact total. Audience structure can therefore affect the bill even when those audiences contain some of the same people.
Mailchimp’s pricing help page says archived, cleaned, and deleted contacts do not count toward the contact total or plan price. Review the list before selecting a tier, and check the live billing page for the count Mailchimp applies to your account. See Mailchimp’s pricing-plan guidance for its stated rules.

What happens if you exceed a limit?
Mailchimp says exceeding the selected contact or email-send limit can result in an additional charge. Its plan-change guidance does not establish one universal overage amount, so do not assume a particular fee: check the billing terms that apply to your account. Mailchimp also says accounts can be paused and plans can be changed. A downgrade from any paid plan to Free is allowed only once over the life of the account. Details are in Mailchimp’s plan-change and pause guidance.

Which Mailchimp plan should you choose?
Choose Free for a genuinely small, low-volume list
Free is the straightforward starting point if 250 contacts, 500 monthly sends, and 250 sends per day cover your needs, and one seat and one audience are enough. Allow for growth: adding contacts or increasing campaign frequency can make the cap unsuitable.
Rank #3
Consider Essentials when the send allowance and included tools fit
Essentials allows monthly sends equal to 10 times the selected maximum contact count. Compare its current feature set with the specific workflow you need rather than upgrading solely because your list is growing.
Consider Standard for a larger send allowance or relevant features
Standard’s allowance is 12 times the selected contact maximum per month. Check whether its available automation, personalization, reporting, audience, and access features solve a real need for your team.
Consider Premium when its advanced tier and support matter
Premium allows 15 times the contact maximum in monthly sends and is presented by Mailchimp as its most advanced plan, with priority support. Its higher positioning is not a reason by itself to upgrade; compare the live price and features with the workload and support your organization actually needs.
How to judge whether Mailchimp is worth it
Before committing, assess the plan using your own list and workflow rather than a generic starting price.
Best Value
- Total cost: Use your actual billable contact count, including duplicates across audiences, and verify how the provider treats unsubscribed or inactive records.
- Sending cadence: Compare the monthly allowance with your planned campaign frequency and volume.
- Workflow: Identify the automation and personalization capabilities you need, then verify they are included in the selected tier.
- Team access: Check seat counts, role permissions, and audience limits against how your team works.
- Support: Decide whether the listed support level and onboarding options match your needs.
- Migration and integrations: Account for the effort to move contacts and connect essential tools; verify the integrations you rely on before switching.
The available plan information supports a comparison of published limits and billing mechanics, not a conclusion about deliverability, ease of use, campaign results, return on investment, or superiority over named alternatives. Those outcomes should be evaluated against your requirements and, where possible, your own experience.
