Magnetic Disk vs. Magnetic Tape: What They Are and How They Work

Magnetic disks rotate for direct access; magnetic tape moves along a strip for sequential access. Here’s how each works and where it is commonly used.

A magnetic disk stores data on a rotating, disk-shaped surface and lets a computer access recorded locations directly. Magnetic tape stores data on a long strip that moves past a read/write head, so the drive must travel along the strip to reach a particular section. Both record information magnetically, but their physical form and access pattern make them suited to different roles.

What is a magnetic disk?

A magnetic disk is a disk-shaped medium with a magnetizable recording layer. In a drive, the disk rotates while a head reads or writes data on its surface. Because the drive can go to a particular recorded location without reading all the data before it, disk storage supports direct access.

Hard disk drives use rigid disks. Floppy disks are a flexible version: IBM describes them as magnetic-coated Mylar disks that spin on a spindle inside a drive. IBM’s floppy-disk history explains the flexible medium and its use in a drive.

What is magnetic tape?

Magnetic tape records information on a long, narrow, magnetizable strip. During reading or writing, the tape moves past a head. Since data is arranged along the strip, reaching a particular section requires moving the tape to that point; this is sequential access.

Today, data tape is commonly encountered as a cartridge used with a compatible tape drive. Tape remains in use in businesses and data centers for backup and retaining large amounts of data that are accessed infrequently. IBM’s overview covers its history and continued business use, while a 2025 technical review describes tape’s role in data storage systems.

Magnetic disk and tape: the key differences

Feature Magnetic disk Magnetic tape
Physical form Rotating disk surface; examples include rigid hard disks and flexible floppy disks. Long strip of magnetizable material, commonly supplied as a cartridge for data storage.
How data is accessed Direct access to a location on the disk. Sequential access; the tape moves to the required section.
Common role Storage where data needs to be accessed directly. Backup and retention of data that is not accessed often.

These are differences in how the media store and retrieve data, not a universal ranking. Which is faster, cheaper, or more durable depends on the media generation, drive, workload, and system.

How disk and tape entered computer storage

Their early commercial histories are close in time. The Computer History Museum dates the UNIVAC UNISERVO—the first tape storage device for a commercial computer—to 1951. It records 1,440,000 decimal digits per reel and a read speed of 100 inches per second. The museum’s timeline marks the beginning of magnetic disk storage in 1956, when IBM shipped a RAMAC 305 system to Zellerbach Paper in San Francisco.

IBM also identifies engineering milestones in tape’s development. In 1953, it introduced a vacuum column for the IBM 701 to help control rapid tape starts and stops. In 1964, IBM’s System/360 tape drives were described as processing 90,000 characters per second, with a stated start-and-stop time of 0.0015 second. IBM says it discontinued reel-to-reel products in 1984 as it moved toward cartridge-based products with the 3480 family.

Why magnetic tape is still used

Tape’s sequential access makes it a different fit from disk: it is useful for keeping backup copies and retaining data that does not need to be opened frequently. IBM characterizes modern tape as a high-capacity, low-energy option with low cost per terabyte for infrequently accessed data. Those are advantages described for particular systems and uses, not guarantees for every product or deployment.

IBM reported an aerial density of 317 gigabits per square inch in a 2020 research demonstration with Fujifilm. That figure describes a research result, not a specification for a consumer tape drive.

What you need to use each medium

A hard disk drive is a familiar example of magnetic disk storage. For tape, a cartridge must match a compatible tape drive. Knowing the distinction does not require buying either: the essential difference is that disks rotate to provide direct access, while tape must move along its strip to reach data.
