First check where the handoff stops. If clicking a magnet link does not open qBittorrent, fix the magnet: protocol association in your operating system or browser. If qBittorrent opens but stays on “Retrieving metadata” or “Gathering info,” the link reached the client; it is waiting for torrent metadata from peers, and changing the default app will not solve that.

If qBittorrent does not open
Set qBittorrent as the application that handles magnet: links. Depending on your system and browser, the choice may be available in qBittorrent’s options, the operating system’s default-app settings, or the browser prompt that appears when a site opens a magnet link. The exact screen varies by platform and browser, so use the relevant system or browser settings rather than following a menu path for a different device.

Do not confuse magnet links with .torrent files. They are separate associations: making qBittorrent the default for downloaded .torrent files does not necessarily register it to handle magnet: links.

If qBittorrent opens but stays on “Retrieving metadata”
A magnet link is not a complete .torrent file. It identifies the torrent with an info-hash and may include a display name or tracker, but the client still needs to retrieve metadata before it can show the torrent’s contents. The libtorrent manual explains that magnet links are intended to be handled by a BitTorrent application without a separate .torrent file; in practice, metadata discovery depends on sources such as peers, and magnet links typically rely on DHT.

Wait for discovery to complete. If the task remains unresolved, the swarm may not have reachable sources that can provide the metadata. In that case, reassigning the magnet protocol to qBittorrent is not the remedy: the client already received the link.
Check the link and try qBittorrent’s add-link interface
Make sure the full magnet link was copied or opened intact. As a diagnostic, use qBittorrent’s “Add Torrent Link” interface to paste the magnet directly. The qBittorrent help page confirms that a client can accept a magnet link directly and that metadata retrieval can take time. If it behaves the same way there, the browser handoff is not the cause.

If you use qBittorrent WebUI
Browser extensions can route magnet links to a qBittorrent WebUI instead of a local desktop client. If that is your intended setup, verify that the extension points to the right WebUI endpoint and that the remote interface is reachable. The project FAQ identifies extensions for this use, but does not establish their current compatibility or browser-store availability; do not assume an extension designed for WebUI is needed for ordinary desktop qBittorrent.
Check the qBittorrent version and platform
Association and magnet-add behavior can vary with the client version and operating system. qBittorrent’s project history records past fixes for Windows magnet associations under non-admin accounts and for a race condition when adding a magnet. Those fixes show that client-side issues have existed, but do not identify the cause of every failure.
