That contrast is useful, but not absolute: a work can combine both approaches, and neither label fits every text by a writer associated with it.
How magical realism and surrealism differ
| Question | Magical realism | Surrealism |
|---|---|---|
| What happens to the strange? | Supernatural or folkloric events enter everyday life and may be narrated without surprise. Cambridge University Press summarizes the effect: “A magical realist text will treat supernatural occurrences as if they were perfectly natural.” | Dreamlike or unexpected images disrupt ordinary rational expectations. |
| What anchors the story? | Often a recognizable material, social, or historical world. | Often the private mind, dreams, free association, and the subconscious. |
| What question helps a reader? | How does the narrator or community absorb the extraordinary into shared reality? | How does the text loosen rational control and bring dream or unconscious associations forward? |
These are tendencies, not pass-or-fail rules. Columbia University’s overview describes magical realism as retaining a mimetic and historical function while bringing myth and the marvelous into everyday life. The Metropolitan Museum of Art traces surrealist writing to automatism and the effort to release the subconscious. Columbia’s overview of magic realism and the Met’s history of surrealism provide fuller context.

How to tell which approach a passage uses
Look at what the passage asks you to accept and where its attention goes. A useful reading test is not simply whether something impossible occurs, but how the text handles it.

- Notice the response to the extraordinary. If a supernatural event is accepted as part of daily or communal life, that points toward magical realism. If the event unsettles rational sequence or behaves like a dream image, that points toward surrealism.
- Check what remains in view. A concrete community, material conditions, or historical experience often anchors magical realism. A passage led by private association, dream logic, or unconscious imagery leans surrealist.
- Describe the passage before naming it. Explain whether it integrates the marvelous into shared reality or gives priority to dream and disrupted logic. A single strange image—or an author’s reputation—is not enough to classify a whole work.
A text can use both strategies or resist either label. Treat the terms as interpretive tools rather than mutually exclusive boxes.

Where the terms came from—and where their histories meet
Magical realism
The name “magical realism” appeared in European art and literary discussions in the 1920s. Columbia’s account links early contexts to German art historian Franz Roh and, independently, Italian writer and critic Massimo Bontempelli’s journal Novecento. The term’s later literary development is not confined to one region: Columbia describes Latin American authors’ adoption of it in the 1940s, drawing on earlier theories, surrealist ideas of the marvelous, and indigenous mythologies. The mode’s relation to folklore, belief, collective memory, and historical representation is part of its significance, not a definition tied to a single cultural tradition.
Surrealism
Surrealism began in the late 1910s and early 1920s as a literary avant-garde experimenting with automatic writing. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates its formal establishment in Paris to André Breton’s Manifesto of Surrealism in 1924. Breton and other writers drew on Freud’s psychology and studies of dreams, using free association to produce unexpected imagery. Surrealism also had artistic and political dimensions, not just a preference for unusual pictures or scenes. The Met’s account of surrealism outlines this background.

The traditions therefore intersect, but their aims are not identical. Columbia’s overview describes Latin American magical realism’s 1940s formation as incorporating surrealist concepts of the marvelous while retaining a mimetic and historical emphasis. Columbia’s scholarly overview discusses that development. The term “magical realism” remains difficult to define, as Christopher Warnes and Kim Anderson Sasser note in their 2020 Cambridge introduction; the historical connection does not erase the distinction between the approaches.

Writers associated with each tradition
Cambridge University Press names Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Salman Rushdie, and Ben Okri among writers associated with magical realism. Breton is central to surrealism’s literary history as a poet, critic, and author of the 1924 manifesto. These are orientation points, not permanent labels for every work by those writers.

Classify the particular text by how it handles reality, the marvelous, history, and the mind. For a closer introduction to the mode’s varied origins and development, see Cambridge’s 2020 collection Magical Realism and Literature, edited by Warnes and Sasser.
