Wizards of the Coast has made Universes Beyond a more central part of Magic: The Gathering: beginning in 2025, its announced strategy paired a more spread-out release schedule with upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases legal in all formats. The company did not formally name this a “Universes Beyond era.” In October 2024, it called Foundations the start of a new era for Magic overall.
What Wizards actually announced
In its October 25, 2024 announcement, Wizards of the Coast said it would spread Magic releases out more beginning in 2025, with a balanced schedule that included both Magic settings and Universes Beyond. It also stated: “Upcoming Universes Beyond booster releases will be legal in all formats.” Wizards’ announcement ties those changes to the broader future of Magic alongside Foundations; it does not establish “the dawn of a new era for Universes Beyond” as an official program name.

The format policy is consequential because it expands the potential reach of crossover cards beyond formats that already accommodate them. It is an announced policy for upcoming booster releases, not a substitute for checking a particular card’s current legality in a specific format.

Wizards’ September 30, 2025 lineup announcement placed three major crossovers on the 2026 schedule, alongside the year’s other Magic releases:

The slate also reflects a strategy already underway: Wizards announced Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY for June 13, 2025 and said its Marvel collaboration would continue with Marvel’s Spider-Man in late 2025. The shift is therefore not just the addition of one crossover; it is the placement of multiple outside franchises within the regular Magic release calendar.

More crossover cards can reach more formats
Wizards’ all-formats announcement makes future Universes Beyond booster releases part of the broader format conversation. But format legality is specific to the card and the format, and the announcement alone does not confirm the status of every card. Check the applicable current card and format rules before building around one.
The schedule is meant to be more spread out
Wizards said it was responding to concerns by spreading releases out further from 2025, with both in-world Magic and crossover sets in the schedule. That is a stated direction, not a published before-and-after calendar comparison: the cited announcements do not provide comparable historical release totals or a full cadence table. They establish the intended mix and spacing, not a quantified reduction in releases.

Crossovers share space with Magic’s own settings
The 2026 examples—Marvel, Middle-earth, and Star Trek—show the range of franchises Wizards planned to bring into Magic. The same annual lineup also includes Magic’s own settings. The announcement presents these as parts of one release slate rather than as separate calendars.

Hasbro’s Q1 2026 investor remarks reported that Lorwyn Eclipsed had become the best-selling Magic premiere set to that point and that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universes Beyond collaboration had exceeded internal expectations. Those statements are company-reported performance claims, not independent sales measurements; Hasbro did not provide unit or revenue figures for those particular claims in the cited remarks.

The same reporting described backlist demand for Avatar: The Last Airbender and FINAL FANTASY. Hasbro later said Secrets of Strixhaven had surpassed Lorwyn Eclipsed as the largest Magic premiere set ever by the time of its remarks. These rankings are time-bound company statements, not permanent all-time standings. The financial context also needs care: Hasbro reported 13% revenue growth for Wizards of the Coast in Q1 2026, which is not a Magic-only growth figure.

The commercial reports suggest that both in-world releases and crossovers can draw substantial interest, but they do not isolate the effect of the all-formats policy or establish that every future collaboration will perform similarly. Hasbro’s investor materials are the source for these company statements.
