WooCommerce is usually the more approachable choice for a WordPress-based store that wants a free core and modular extensions. Magento Open Source suits teams able to operate a more technical, Composer- and command-line-driven stack. Adobe Commerce—the commercial Magento product—adds deployment models and documented B2B capabilities that require a separate evaluation. The right choice depends on your catalog, integrations, markets, technical staff, infrastructure control and total budget.
First, clarify what “Magento” means
Current Adobe documentation uses two related names:
- Magento Open Source is Adobe’s contributed open-source code base.
- Adobe Commerce is the broader commercial platform. Adobe documents SaaS, PaaS and on-premises deployment options, each with different operational control, customization and supported capabilities.
A feature documented for Adobe Commerce should not automatically be treated as part of Magento Open Source. Confirm the exact edition and deployment model before comparing requirements, features or costs.
WooCommerce and Magento compared
| Decision area | WooCommerce | Magento Open Source / Adobe Commerce |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | Open-source ecommerce functionality built on WordPress. | Magento Open Source is open-source code; Adobe Commerce is the commercial product built around that platform. |
| Platform fees | WooCommerce says its core has no monthly subscription and no revenue share. | No comparable official total-cost figure is established for Magento Open Source or an individual Adobe Commerce implementation. |
| Infrastructure | You select and pay for hosting and remain responsible for the WordPress and WooCommerce operating environment. | Adobe Commerce can be deployed as SaaS, PaaS or on-premises; Magento Open Source requires you to operate a compatible application stack. |
| Technical operation | Setup is organized around WordPress, products, payments, tax, shipping, design and extensions. | Installation and upgrades use Composer and command-line procedures and require supported dependencies. |
| Multiple stores and locales | Multiple currencies, regions, tax rules and shipping scenarios are possible, with details depending on configuration and extensions. | One instance can support multiple websites, stores and store views with different content and attributes, and can be configured for multiple locales. |
| B2B | The reviewed documentation establishes broad store and extension functionality, but not like-for-like native parity with Adobe Commerce B2B. | Adobe Commerce documentation covers company accounts, Quick Order and Negotiable Quotes. Verify availability for the intended edition and deployment. |
Costs: free core does not mean free store
WooCommerce’s published 2026 estimates put hosting for most stores at $25–$350 per month and extensions at $29–$299 per year per extension. WooCommerce also states that its core platform has a $0 monthly subscription and 0% revenue share. These are vendor estimates for platform-related costs, not an independent total-cost study or a guarantee for your store.

Hosting needs rise with traffic and performance requirements.
The available Adobe material does not provide a fair, like-for-like total-cost estimate for Magento Open Source or a quote for Adobe Commerce. Do not infer that either is automatically cheaper. Build a scope-based budget covering:
- Hosting or cloud infrastructure and storage
- Implementation, design and migration
- Extensions, integrations and custom development
- Security updates, testing, backups and monitoring
- Payment, tax, shipping and third-party service charges
- Internal developers, agencies or managed support
Technical requirements and setup workload
WooCommerce 10.8 and later
WooCommerce’s current recommendations call for WordPress 6.9 or later, PHP 8.3 or later (tested up to PHP 8.4), MySQL 8.0 or later or MariaDB 10.6 or later, HTTPS and a WordPress memory limit of at least 256 MB. These are current recommendations for the stated WooCommerce versions; older legacy versions may expose a site to security vulnerabilities.

Its setup checklist covers adding products, connecting payments, customizing the store, configuring tax, choosing shipping options and completing launch checks. Payment-provider availability varies by country and store details, so confirm providers for your market before committing.
Adobe Commerce 2.4.9
Adobe’s 2.4.9 requirements list Composer 2.10, OpenSearch 3, PHP 8.5 and MariaDB 12.3 as recommended (MariaDB 11.8 is also listed), among other version-specific dependencies. These combinations apply to that release; requirements for another Magento or Adobe Commerce release may differ.
Adobe’s installation materials describe Composer and command-line installation and upgrade procedures. The integrator path assumes application-server access and substantial technical experience. A hosting plan that does not support the exact required stack is not an acceptable substitute.

Which platform fits your business?
Choose WooCommerce when
- Your site already runs WordPress and your team is comfortable administering it.
- You want a free, open-source core with a large extension-based approach.
- Your catalog and workflows can be assembled from available plugins and integrations.
- You prefer selecting your own host and infrastructure while accepting responsibility for upkeep.
Choose Magento Open Source when
- Your team can manage Composer, command-line deployment, server access and supported software versions.
- You need its documented multi-website, multi-store and store-view structure.
- You expect substantial catalog, pricing, integration or workflow customization and can fund engineering and maintenance.
Evaluate Adobe Commerce when
- You need a commercial Adobe deployment model—SaaS, PaaS or on-premises—that matches your operating requirements.
- Documented Adobe Commerce capabilities such as company accounts, Quick Order or Negotiable Quotes are relevant to your B2B operation.
- Your organization can justify the implementation, support and governance model and has confirmed which capabilities apply to the selected deployment.
A practical selection checklist
- Define the edition. Write down WooCommerce, Magento Open Source or the specific Adobe Commerce deployment you are considering.
- Map the store. Record catalog size, product types, customer accounts, pricing rules, tax jurisdictions, shipping methods, currencies, languages and number of storefronts.
- List integrations. Include ERP, CRM, warehouse, marketplace, payment, search, tax and shipping systems, then verify version and API compatibility.
- Assess operations. Identify who will handle releases, security, backups, performance monitoring, incident response and extension conflicts.
- Model the full budget. Include development, migration, infrastructure, extensions, payment charges, support and internal staff—not just the platform license.
- Validate with a proof of concept. Test your highest-risk catalog rule, integration, checkout flow and regional tax or shipping scenario on the exact versions you intend to deploy.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The official materials reviewed do not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark for speed, conversion, search-engine optimization or full lifecycle cost. Therefore, claims that one platform is universally faster, cheaper, better for SEO or superior for every large store are not established here. Performance and operating cost depend on workload, architecture, extensions, hosting and team practices.

For a WordPress-centered business seeking a modular store and a free core, WooCommerce is the sensible starting point—provided you budget for hosting, extensions and ongoing administration. For a technically capable organization needing Magento’s multi-store structure or extensive customization, Magento Open Source can be appropriate. For commercial B2B capabilities or flexible Adobe deployment models, evaluate Adobe Commerce specifically rather than treating it as interchangeable with Magento Open Source. The best platform is the one whose edition, operating workload and total cost match your documented requirements.

Is Magento more expensive than WooCommerce?
There is no reliable like-for-like figure in the cited official material. WooCommerce publishes hosting and extension estimates, while Adobe’s pages do not publish a comparable Magento Open Source total or an individual Adobe Commerce quote. Compare complete implementation and operating costs for your scope.

Can WooCommerce handle multiple countries and currencies?
WooCommerce documentation covers multi-region, currency, tax and shipping configurations, but the exact result depends on your settings and extensions. Verify the required payment and tax services for each country.
Are Adobe Commerce B2B features included in Magento Open Source?
Do not assume so. Adobe documents features such as company accounts, Quick Order and Negotiable Quotes for Adobe Commerce; confirm availability for the precise edition and deployment you plan to use.
