In WordPress, open WooCommerce > Settings > Site visibility, select Coming soon, choose whether it applies to the whole site or store pages only, and click Save changes. WooCommerce then shows visitors a Coming soon page while authorized users and people with a private link can review the store. To reopen the store, select Live on the same screen and save. Enable WooCommerce maintenance mode in five steps
- Open the visibility settings. In WP Admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Site visibility.
- Select Coming soon. This is WooCommerce’s built-in maintenance-style visibility control; you do not need a separate plugin for the basic setup.
- Choose the scope. Decide whether to hide the entire site or only the store pages listed by WooCommerce.
- Optional: create a private link. Use the setting to generate a link for selected reviewers, then share it only with the people who need access.
- Save changes. Visitors will see the Coming soon landing page according to the scope you selected.
The admin-bar visibility badge is only a shortcut to this screen. Showing or toggling the badge itself does not change visitor access; the saved Coming soon or Live setting does.
Choose what Coming soon should hide
The scope choice matters most on an existing website that has public, non-store content.

Review the scope before saving. A store-pages-only setting is not the same as making every URL on the domain private.

Let clients or reviewers see the hidden store
Coming soon mode can generate a private link for controlled review. Create the link in WooCommerce > Settings > Site visibility, copy it, and send it directly to the intended reviewers. This allows them to inspect the store while ordinary visitors continue to see the Coming soon page. Treat the URL as access information and share it selectively.
Turn maintenance mode off
- Return to WooCommerce > Settings > Site visibility.
- Select Live.
- Click Save changes.
Live makes the site accessible to visitors again. If the public view still shows Coming soon immediately afterward, a page cache, optimization plugin or CDN may still be serving the earlier response. Wait for the cache to expire or follow your host’s cache-clearing procedure, then check the site in a private browser window. Customize the Coming soon page
If a block theme is active, the Site visibility screen includes an Editor link beneath Coming soon. Use it to edit the template in the Site Editor. WooCommerce lists six pre-designed patterns for WooCommerce 9.8 and later; availability and appearance can depend on the active theme. With store-pages-only scope, the page may use the theme’s header and footer. The official template guide has the version-specific details: Customizing the Coming soon page.
Coming soon versus disabling purchases
Use Coming soon when the primary requirement is to control who can see the store. It is different from a vacation or purchase-closure mode that leaves catalog pages online but prevents checkout.

Choose Vacation Mode when customers should continue browsing products but must not place orders. Choose Coming soon when you need to limit visibility during a launch, redesign or maintenance window.
A safer workflow for major live-store changes
Changing the Site visibility setting is quick and does not require staging. For substantial updates, WooCommerce Subscriptions’ backup guidance describes a broader workflow: back up the site, prepare and test the changes in staging, enable maintenance visibility while applying final changes to production, verify the result, and switch the site back to Live. Use that process as risk management for major work, not as a prerequisite for the dashboard setting. See WooCommerce’s backup restoration guidance.

Defaults and common surprises
- An already-live store remains Live unless an administrator changes the setting.
- New stores completing onboarding default to Coming soon; the exact scope depends on the onboarding conditions described in WooCommerce’s guide.
- Users with the appropriate authorization, and people using a valid private link, may see the store while ordinary visitors cannot.
- Switching the admin-bar badge is not the same as saving a visibility change.
Developer options
Developers can synchronize Coming soon state with another plugin or hosting provider, add code-based exclusions and coordinate cache purges. Those options are covered in WooCommerce’s integration documentation; most merchants only need the Site visibility screen.
