A Magento card skimmer is malicious JavaScript that runs in a shopper’s browser on a checkout page and can send payment data to an unauthorized destination. The page can still load and the payment flow can appear to work, so a successful uptime check shows reachability—not that checkout scripts are trustworthy.
How does a Magento card skimmer steal cards?
Digital skimming, also known as Magecart or form-jacking, involves malicious scripts placed in checkout pages to capture and exfiltrate cardholder data and other sensitive information, according to Mastercard’s security bulletin about Magento 1. Once the script is delivered with the page, it executes in the shopper’s browser. The browser-side activity can occur while the storefront remains available and the transaction appears to proceed normally.

The key distinction is where the compromise acts: the attacker’s code runs in the checkout experience, not necessarily in a way that makes the whole site go offline. A site responding successfully therefore does not establish that its payment-page code is unchanged or that browser requests are going only to authorized destinations.
Why do uptime checks miss a card skimmer?
An uptime check generally answers whether a URL or service responds. A skimmer targets what happens in a shopper’s browser during checkout. Those are different signals: a page can respond successfully while a malicious script also executes. This is a distinction between availability and browser-side integrity, not evidence that a particular monitoring product has been tested against a particular skimmer.
#1 Best Overall
Uptime monitoring remains useful for detecting outages. It should not be treated as proof that checkout scripts are safe, that payment data is not being captured, or that browser requests are sent only to intended destinations.
Which controls address the browser-side risk?
| Control | What it examines or controls | What it can tell or do |
|---|---|---|
| Content Security Policy (CSP) | Which browser resources a page may load | Can report policy violations and, in restrict mode, block resources outside the configured policy. |
| Subresource Integrity (SRI) | Whether a fetched resource matches an expected cryptographic hash | Can detect a changed resource when its expected hash is specified; it does not prove every permitted script is benign. |
| Adobe Security Scan Tool | Platform security checks | Provides scheduled or on-demand scan results and historical reports; it is not documented as continuous real-browser checkout monitoring. |
| Availability checks | Whether a URL or service responds | Provides availability evidence, not proof of browser-side script integrity. |
How CSP can limit unexpected scripts
Adobe describes CSP as a browser resource policy that can help detect and mitigate cross-site scripting (XSS) and related data-injection attacks, including card skimmers. In report-only mode, the browser records violations without enforcing the policy. In restrict mode, it blocks resources that do not meet the configured rules. Adobe also documents collecting violation reports at a configured endpoint. See Adobe’s CSP overview and CSP implementation documentation.
Rank #2
CSP requires a policy that reflects the scripts and other resources a store legitimately uses. A restrictive policy can block expected functionality if it is configured without accounting for the checkout’s dependencies. Reviewing report-only violations before enforcing a policy can help identify resources that need attention.
Check the deployed version and mode
Adobe says CSP support began in Commerce and Magento Open Source 2.3.5. For versions 2.4.7 and later, Adobe documents restrict mode by default on payment pages and report-only mode by default on other pages. Those defaults do not confirm the configuration of a particular store; verify the deployed version and its actual policy.

How SRI checks scripts
Subresource Integrity lets the browser compare a fetched resource with an expected cryptographic hash. A mismatch can reveal that the resource differs from the one the page expects. Adobe documents SRI support for Commerce and Magento Open Source 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p6, 2.4.7, 2.4.8, and later, with default coverage on payment pages. Merchants can extend coverage. See Adobe’s Subresource Integrity documentation.
SRI is an integrity check, not a judgment about whether code is safe. If a permitted script and its expected hash are both changed through an authorized deployment or a compromised process, the hash comparison alone cannot establish that the new code is benign.

What Adobe’s Security Scan Tool adds
Adobe describes its Security Scan Tool as a free service with scheduled weekly or daily scans, on-demand scans, historical reports, and more than 21,000 security tests, including checks for malware and security risks. The test count is Adobe’s description of the tool, not a measure of how prevalent skimming is. Adobe does not describe the service as continuous real-browser checkout monitoring. Details are in the Adobe Security Scan Tool documentation.
Use scan results as one security signal alongside review of checkout scripts, CSP reporting and SRI coverage—not as proof that every live checkout session is free of malicious browser-side code.

A practical order for reviewing a Magento checkout
- Confirm the platform version and patch status. Check the deployed Commerce or Magento Open Source version against Adobe’s current security guidance before relying on version-specific protections.
- Review checkout scripts and their provenance. Identify the scripts loaded on payment pages and whether each has a known, legitimate source and purpose.
- Evaluate CSP. Verify the policy actually applied to payment pages. Where appropriate, begin in report-only mode, review violations, then enforce a policy that accounts for legitimate checkout resources.
- Check SRI coverage. Confirm which payment-page resources have integrity hashes and whether additional resources should be covered.
- Collect and review CSP violation reports. Reporting can expose resources that violate policy; investigate unexpected entries rather than assuming every violation is malicious.
- Run Adobe Security Scan Tool checks. Use scheduled or on-demand results as an additional platform-security signal, while keeping availability monitoring in its separate role.
Magento 1 and the historical support warning
Mastercard’s historical bulletin warned that Adobe support for Magento 1 would end after June 2020. Treat that as a dated warning about Adobe’s support timeline, not as a complete statement about every fork or third-party support arrangement. It does not establish the current support status of a specific store.
