It is associated with the community-led maester365 project—not a Microsoft commercial product—and it complements rather than replaces Secure Score, Defender, vulnerability scanners, penetration testing, or compliance platforms.
Its practical purpose is to catch configuration drift, regenerate evidence, and make a failed control actionable instead of leaving it as a one-time review finding.
What problem does Maester solve?
Microsoft 365 settings change whenever administrators alter Conditional Access, identity, devices, applications, Exchange, SharePoint, Purview, or other services. A review performed once can be accurate on the day it is delivered and obsolete after the next change. Maester addresses that gap by treating expected configuration as code.
- Teams define security expectations as tests.
- Tests and exceptions can be stored in source control.
- The same checks can run after a change, nightly, or in a delivery pipeline.
- Reports provide evidence, remediation context, and a history of regressions.
- Custom tests can prevent a discovered failure from recurring.
The framework is intended for repeatable validation, not automatic remediation. Administrators still decide whether a failed condition is risky, acceptable with a compensating control, or simply not applicable.

How Maester works
Maester combines a PowerShell module, Pester test execution, Microsoft Graph PowerShell queries, and a maintained test repository. You install the module from the PowerShell Gallery, install the standard tests into a local directory, authenticate to the tenant, and invoke the test run.
- PowerShell module: provides commands such as
Connect-Maester,Invoke-Maester, and test-management commands. - Pester: supplies the test syntax and execution engine.
- Microsoft Graph PowerShell: reads Microsoft cloud configuration, subject to the permissions granted to the operator or automation identity.
- Test repository: contains maintained checks and baseline mappings.
- Reports: results can be exported or presented as HTML, CSV, Excel, JSON, and Markdown, depending on the selected workflow.

What does Maester test?
Coverage changes as the project adds tests and Microsoft changes its services. The project website currently advertises hundreds of built-in tests and five baseline families; verify the live documentation before using a count in an audit or procurement document.

Maester 2.2 was announced on July 26, 2026. That release specifically listed 269 Active Directory checks, five Purview checks, 12 new SharePoint Online checks, five CIS GitHub organization controls, nine Global Secure Access checks, and four Intune endpoint-security checks. These are release-specific additions, not a permanent total. Details are in the 2.2 announcement.

The project website also reports, as volatile project metrics, more than 500,000 PowerShell Gallery downloads, more than 60,000 tenants protected, more than 360 built-in tests, and five compliance frameworks. Treat those figures as date-stamped claims from the project, not independently audited measurements.

Secure Score answers, “How does Microsoft rate these recommendations?” Maester answers, “Does our tenant currently meet the conditions encoded in these tests?” Their results are not equivalent scores. Defender and Microsoft security portals focus on alerts, incidents, detection, and response; they are complementary to configuration testing.
Requirements and identity planning
- A PowerShell environment compatible with the installed Maester release and permission to install modules.
- A supported Microsoft cloud tenant and network access to the required services.
- Delegated or application Microsoft Graph permissions, with the required consent and role assignments.
- A procedure for running an initial, preferably read-only, assessment and triaging findings.
- Source control if you will customize tests or automate them.
- A secure automation identity, result-retention policy, and alert owner for scheduled execution.
- Awareness that licensing and feature availability affect whether a particular test applies.
There is no universal permission list: required access depends on the tests and services selected. Confirm the current Maester documentation and the specific Graph calls before granting consent. Do not use Global Administrator as a shortcut.

The repository documents an optional environment parameter:
Connect-Maester -Environment USGovDocumented values include Global, China, USGov, and USGovDOD. National-cloud support does not mean identical coverage. Graph endpoints, permissions, service availability, and applicable tests can differ, so validate results in the tenant’s actual cloud.

Install Maester and the standard tests

Install the module for your user account:

Create a test directory and switch to it:
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path ~/maester-tests Set-Location ~/maester-tests -
Install the maintained test files:
Install-MaesterTests
Module installation is not tenant authorization. Authentication and permissions are evaluated when Maester connects and runs tests.
Run your first assessment
Connect-Maester
Invoke-MaesterRun interactively first so sign-in prompts, consent, Conditional Access, and cloud selection are visible. The resulting report may include interactive HTML and machine-readable formats, depending on how the command is configured.
How to read results
- Pass: the tested condition was observed.
- Fail: the observed configuration did not meet the test condition.
- Skipped or inconclusive: Maester could not evaluate the test, often because of permissions, licensing, an unavailable service, a missing prerequisite, or cloud differences.
- Remediation: the expected correction and, where provided, a link to the relevant Microsoft administration location.
A failed test is not proof of active compromise or an exploitable vulnerability. It is evidence that a defined configuration condition was not met at that time. Validate the finding, assess business impact, and assign an owner.
Update the framework and tests separately
Maester’s module and its downloaded test files are separate update surfaces:

Record the Maester module version, test version, PowerShell version, Graph module versions, runner image, and cloud environment when reproducibility matters. Pin versions in critical pipelines and test upgrades outside production first.

Write organization-specific tests
Custom tests use Pester-style PowerShell. Place them in the Custom folder and use the .Tests.ps1 suffix so automatic discovery can find them. For example:
Custom/ContosoEntra.Tests.ps1- Keep custom files separate from downloaded standard tests.
- Store them in version control and require code review.
- Test both the expected pass state and a deliberate failure state.
- Include remediation instructions in the test output.
- Prefer stable lookups or configuration variables over hard-coded object IDs.
- Give every exception an owner, reason, and expiry date.
The official guidance is at maester.dev/docs/writing-tests/. A custom test is valuable when the organization’s policy differs from a built-in assumption or when a previously discovered failure must never recur.
Automate Maester in CI/CD
Documented integration paths include GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps Pipelines, GitLab pipelines, and Azure Automation. A production design normally follows this sequence:
- Keep standard and custom tests in a private repository.
- Create a dedicated automation identity rather than reusing a human administrator.
- Grant only the Microsoft Graph and service permissions required by the selected tests.
- Use workload identity federation where the platform supports it.
- Run on a schedule and after changes to identity, access, device, or workload configuration.
- Publish HTML for investigation and Markdown, JSON, CSV, or other machine-readable output for tracking.
- Alert on meaningful failures, not every transient API or permission error.
- Track accepted exceptions with owners and expiry dates.
The official Maester GitHub Action documents workload identity federation, which can avoid storing long-lived client secrets in a workflow. Federation does not automatically create least privilege: trust configuration, permissions, logs, and secret-handling controls still require review.

Authentication or consent errors
Check the selected cloud, exact failing Graph call, admin consent, role assignments, Conditional Access, and automation-identity configuration. Reproduce the run interactively before changing pipeline permissions, and avoid broad administrator grants as a first response.

Skipped or inconclusive tests
Determine whether the cause is a missing license, unavailable service, insufficient read access, an unenabled feature, or a genuinely inapplicable control. Document intentional exclusions and use supported test-selection or tagging controls. A skipped test is not a pass.
False positives
Review the test definition against your architecture. Shared or break-glass accounts, custom roles, administrative boundaries, and compensating controls can differ from built-in assumptions. Document the exception or write a policy-specific custom test rather than silently suppressing the result.
Version drift
Align module, test, PowerShell, Graph, and runner versions; review release notes; and stage updates before changing production gates.
Overprivileged automation
Separate assessment from remediation, use a dedicated identity, prefer federation over stored client secrets where supported, and grant only the permissions required by the enabled tests.

Open-source, hosted, and commercial operating choices
The core Maester framework is presented as free, MIT-licensed open source. That does not make operation cost-free: identity administration, pipeline runners, report storage, support, and test maintenance consume engineering time.
The official site also presents hosted and self-hosted Maester Cloud options. Current pricing was not established here, so request and verify terms directly at maester.dev, especially for data residency and sovereignty requirements.
Commercial CSPM or managed-security platforms may be preferable when you need hosted dashboards, cross-cloud asset discovery, vendor support, or managed remediation. Microsoft Secure Score, Defender, Entra, and Purview remain complementary Microsoft services rather than products Maester replaces.
Limitations to plan for
- Results depend on permissions, API availability, licensing, and service state.
- Built-in tests encode assumptions that may not fit every business.
- Microsoft service changes can make tests stale or alter expected behavior.
- A passing suite does not prove the tenant is secure or compliant.
- A failing test does not by itself prove compromise.
- Scheduled automation creates responsibilities for authentication, logging, retention, alert routing, and exception governance.
- Test counts and project metrics change over time.
Bottom line
Maester is a practical security-as-code layer for Microsoft environments: install it, authenticate with deliberately scoped permissions, run the maintained tests, review failures and skips in context, and add organization-specific checks under version control. It is most valuable when configuration validation must be repeatable and auditable. It should sit alongside Secure Score, Defender, vulnerability management, penetration testing, and compliance processes—not be mistaken for any of them.
