To verify a Macrium Reflect backup, open Existing Backups, select the appropriate Image or File and Folder view, select the backup, and choose Verify. Reflect checks the backup’s data against stored hashes. A successful check supports data integrity, but it does not prove the image will boot or that a restore will succeed.
Verify a backup in Macrium Reflect X
- Open Existing Backups.
- Select Image or File and Folder, depending on the type of backup.
- Select the backup you want to check and choose Verify.
- For an incremental or differential backup, keep the related prior files included unless you intentionally want to check only the selected file.
If the backup does not appear in the list, look in another location or browse directly to the backup file. Macrium’s Reflect X verification guide documents the interface and options.

What Reflect’s verification checks
Reflect recalculates an MD5 hash for each block of backup data and compares it with the hash recorded in the backup index. A mismatch means the data read during verification differs from what was recorded when the backup was created; Reflect treats this as corruption. Verification is a useful check for changes or corruption in stored backup data.

What a successful verification does not prove
A successful hash check does not show that Windows will boot from the image or that every recovery step will work. It confirms that the checked backup data matches the hashes recorded during backup creation; it does not exercise the restore process. Macrium’s verification documentation distinguishes hash verification from testing whether an image is bootable.
Run verification from the command line
Macrium installs MRVerify.exe with Reflect at C:Program FilesMacriumReflectMRVerify.exe. Run it from an Administrator Command Prompt. This option suits scripted or batch checks; Macrium documents the available parameters in its MRVerify guide.

The guide’s sample syntax is:
mrverify.exe "full path to image file or folder" -p[--password] "password" -r[--recurse] -x[--fix] -l[--logfile] "logfile name"
MRVerify can check an image file or folder, recurse through subfolders, write a log, accept a backup password, and attempt to repair failed blocks if the live file system still contains the original data. Use --set when you need to check whether the complete set associated with a selected file can be restored. The documented exit code is 0 if verification succeeds and 1 if any file fails.

For confidence in actual recovery, pair hash verification with a separate, non-destructive restore test. Macrium’s validation guidance suggests restoring to a secondary blank disk and attempting to boot, restoring to a replacement system, or exercising the workflow in a virtual machine where practical. Reflect rescue media provides a bootable environment for recovery.

Automatically verify future backups
Enable Auto Verify Image if you want Reflect to verify an image immediately after creating it. Macrium warns this can considerably increase backup creation time. See its Auto Verify Image documentation for the setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If verification fails
Do not treat a failed check as proof that one specific drive or component is faulty. It establishes that read-back data did not match the recorded hashes, but not why. Macrium’s older Reflect v5 troubleshooting page names backup media as a likely cause and also mentions possible memory or motherboard faults. Because that page covers an older version, use it only as general diagnostic context and consult current Reflect X support for version-specific next steps.
