The practical choice is less about whether Word, Excel, or PowerPoint will open and more about whether your operating system is supported, your license activates the apps you install, and the Mac or Windows version supports the feature your workflow needs.
Does Microsoft 365 work on a MacBook Air and a Surface Laptop?
Yes. Microsoft provides Microsoft 365 apps for macOS and Windows. Its consumer system-requirements page lists Windows 11 for Windows and the three most recent major macOS versions for Mac. A Microsoft or organizational account is required for licensing and access to services, according to Microsoft’s home-use requirements.

Those requirements apply to the software, not to every model in either laptop family. The title does not identify a MacBook Air generation or a Surface Laptop configuration, so it is not possible to make a like-for-like claim about speed, battery life, or overall hardware value based on the family names alone.
What system requirements should you check?
Microsoft’s consumer Microsoft 365 requirements page lists these suite-level minimums. They are not benchmarks or a guarantee that two devices will perform equally under a demanding workload.

Microsoft’s Mac support window changes as macOS releases change. In a September 2025 support snapshot, Microsoft listed Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, and Sonoma 14 as the three supported major versions. The same notice said Sonoma or later was required to receive updates starting with Office for Mac update 16.101 in September 2025; Ventura’s last supported build was 16.101 and Monterey’s was 16.88. These are dated details, not a promise of the current support window. Check Microsoft’s macOS update-support page for the version supported when you buy or update.
Are Microsoft 365 apps different on Mac and Windows?
Yes: the apps are platform-specific builds, so a feature available in one version should not be assumed to work identically in the other. The available official information here does not provide a comprehensive, current feature-by-feature parity list for Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint. If your work depends on a particular function, check Microsoft’s current documentation for that app, platform, and Microsoft 365 edition before choosing a laptop.

- For Word or PowerPoint workflows, check the specific editing, collaboration, and cloud-backed features you use.
- For work managed by an employer or school, confirm that its account, policies, and required apps support the operating system you plan to use.
Do not treat a difference between operating systems as proof that a named feature is exclusive to one platform unless Microsoft’s documentation for that feature confirms it.

Microsoft 365 subscription versus one-time Office
Microsoft says one-time Office suites include desktop applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but do not include some cloud-backed features or Microsoft 365 services. Its examples include PowerPoint Designer and Excel Data Types, as well as OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online. Compare what your work requires with Microsoft’s explanation of Office suites; an Office purchase is not interchangeable with a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Mac App Store downloads
For Word, Excel, and PowerPoint downloaded from the Mac App Store, Microsoft says a Microsoft 365 subscription is required to create and edit documents. Some one-time Office licenses cannot activate those App Store versions and must instead be used with Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft. If activation fails, verify both the license type and where you obtained the apps using Microsoft’s Mac App Store activation guidance.

How should you compare the actual laptops?
Compare named generations and configurations, not “MacBook Air” against “Surface Laptop” as if either were one fixed device. Microsoft’s store lists, for example, a Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (7th Edition), but that example does not establish which MacBook Air is comparable or what either device will deliver for your workload. Check the specific Surface Laptop listing and the exact MacBook Air configuration you are considering.
- Match generation and screen size as closely as possible.
- Compare memory and storage against your files, multitasking, and other applications—not just the suite minimums.
- Check the ports and accessories your desk setup requires.
- Confirm the operating-system support window and the Microsoft 365 plan and features you need.
A Surface Laptop store page may advertise Microsoft 365 apps or a subscription offer, but the offer’s terms can vary. Check the retailer’s current terms rather than assuming that buying the computer permanently includes a Microsoft 365 subscription.

What if Excel for Mac opens files but will not let you edit?
Microsoft published a support notice describing an issue beginning July 13, 2026 that may affect some Microsoft 365 subscribers on macOS and some non-subscription Office users: affected apps may open and print files but be unable to edit, save, or create them. This is a dated issue notice, not evidence that Microsoft 365 generally fails on Mac. If you encounter those symptoms, check Microsoft’s Excel for Mac issues page for the affected scope and current workaround.
Which laptop should you choose for Microsoft 365?
Choose the Surface Laptop if your work depends on a Windows-specific workflow or requires Windows 11. Choose the MacBook Air if macOS fits your wider setup and the macOS version, app features, and license you need are supported. For either choice, confirm the specific apps and features against current Microsoft documentation, then compare the actual laptop configurations you intend to buy.
