Choose the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 if you value a lighter laptop and lower starting price; choose the 15-inch if you want more screen space, a standard 10-core GPU and a six-speaker system. Both share the same M5 CPU family, memory and storage options, ports, and Apple-rated battery-life ceilings. For most buyers, picking enough memory and storage matters more than paying for the larger GPU configuration.
What is the MacBook Air with M5?
Apple’s 2026 MacBook Air is available in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. It went on sale in the United States on March 11, 2026, with preorders starting March 4. U.S. starting prices announced by Apple were $1,099 for the 13-inch and $1,299 for the 15-inch; announced education prices were $999 and $1,199, respectively. These are Apple’s U.S. launch prices, not a guarantee of current pricing or discounts. Apple’s launch announcement and current buying page provide the relevant pricing and purchase details.
Both sizes have a 10-core M5 CPU, 16-core Neural Engine, Neural Accelerators, hardware-accelerated ray tracing and 153GB/s memory bandwidth. The 13-inch base configuration has an 8-core GPU, while the 15-inch has a 10-core GPU. Apple offers the 10-core GPU in configurable 13-inch models as well. Both start with 16GB unified memory and a 512GB SSD. Full specifications are listed by Apple for the 13-inch model and 15-inch model.
The M5 also includes hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, plus AV1 decode. Those capabilities support compatible creative and playback workflows, but they are not evidence that every demanding professional task will run well over long periods. Apple Intelligence features depend on software, language, region and rollout; the chip alone does not guarantee that every feature or third-party AI application is available or faster.

Specifications are from Apple’s 13-inch and 15-inch technical pages; starting prices are from its March 2026 announcement. Apple’s listed storage capacities are nominal, so usable formatted space is lower.
Choose the 13-inch for carrying convenience
At 2.7 pounds, the 13-inch is 0.6 pounds lighter than the 15-inch and takes up less room in a bag. It is the practical fit for commuting, classrooms, frequent travel, cafés and users who usually connect to a desktop monitor. It also costs $200 less at the announced U.S. starting price. For browsing, writing, office work, schoolwork, ordinary programming and light creative work, its 8-core GPU base configuration is a reasonable starting point.
Choose the 15-inch for built-in workspace and sound
The larger display gives spreadsheets, documents, code windows, timelines and side-by-side apps more room when you are away from an external monitor. The 15-inch also has the 10-core GPU in every configuration and a six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers. It is the better fit if screen area and built-in audio matter more than carrying weight or the $200 entry-price difference. Its larger battery capacity does not mean Apple rates it for longer use: Apple lists the same maximum battery-life figures for both models.

How much memory and storage should you buy?
Memory and storage are configured at purchase; do not plan to upgrade them later. Unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU and system, so graphics-heavy work and local AI tools draw on the same pool as applications and macOS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Memory: 16GB, 24GB or 32GB
- 16GB: A sensible base for web use, school, office applications, ordinary programming and moderate multitasking.
- 24GB: A useful middle choice for many open applications and tabs, development tools, large documents or a longer ownership horizon. It is a strong general-purpose upgrade if the budget allows.
- 32GB: Best reserved for heavier development environments, virtual machines, large creative projects, data analysis, local AI workloads or unusually demanding multitasking.
Consider memory first if you routinely have many demanding applications open or intend to keep the laptop for years. A larger SSD cannot compensate for memory pressure during a workload.
Storage: 512GB, 1TB, 2TB or 4TB
- 512GB: Works for cloud-first users with documents, standard applications and streamed media, provided local project files stay limited.
- 1TB: A safer everyday capacity for local photo libraries, development tools, creative applications and keeping more files on the laptop.
- 2TB or 4TB: Consider these for video projects, large photo collections, local datasets, game libraries or a strong preference for internal rather than external storage.
Leave room for macOS, applications, caches, temporary render files and backups when estimating needs. For archives and large media projects, compare the convenience of internal capacity with an external SSD and a separate backup plan before paying for a larger built-in drive.

Is the 10-core GPU worth it?
For email, browsing, writing, school and ordinary office tasks, the 13-inch 8-core GPU should be sufficient. The 10-core option is more relevant to gaming, 3D work, video effects and other GPU-accelerated creative applications. Apple offers no percentage improvement in the cited specifications that would establish a universal value for the upgrade, so do not pay extra on the assumption that every task will be faster.
The 15-inch includes the 10-core GPU, but that is one part of a package that also buys a larger display and chassis. If you are choosing the 13-inch, select the higher GPU configuration when a specific workload benefits from it, not simply because the number is larger.
Display, camera, wireless and everyday details
Both Liquid Retina displays are rated at 500 nits and support wide color, True Tone and one billion colors. The 15-inch provides more workspace, not an established leap in image quality. Apple’s specifications do not list a high refresh rate, and the rounded corners mean the stated diagonal does not describe a full rectangular visible area. For color-critical professional work, check calibration and workflow requirements rather than treating the display name as proof of reference-grade accuracy.

Both models have a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support, 1080p video recording, a three-microphone array, directional beamforming, and Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum microphone modes. Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread networking. The four finishes are Sky Blue, Silver, Starlight and Midnight. Apple’s technical specifications list a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable and a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W maximum output; fast charging is supported with a 70W-or-higher USB Power Delivery source. Check the specific purchase configuration and region for included accessories.
Battery life: understand Apple’s figures
Apple claims up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of wireless web use for either size. Apple says those figures come from tests using preproduction systems configured with 16GB memory and a 512GB SSD, so they are manufacturer test results rather than independent measurements. Actual runtime varies with brightness, video calls, external displays, browser activity, background sync, workload, wireless conditions and battery health. Apple lists batteries of 53.8Wh in the 13-inch and 66.5Wh in the 15-inch, but that capacity difference does not establish which model lasts longer in a particular real-world task. Apple’s 15-inch technical specifications detail its test qualification.

- One external display up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 240Hz.
Apple also specifies that two external displays can be connected over a single Thunderbolt port. Check the exact monitor, resolution, refresh rate, cable and dock against Apple’s display compatibility specifications before buying accessories. A dock or hub may still be needed for HDMI, Ethernet, SD cards, USB-A devices or more wired peripherals; the two-port design can be restrictive on a busy desk. Inexpensive hubs may not support the resolution and refresh-rate combination you expect.
Which configuration fits your workload?
| Buyer | Starting recommendation | Reason to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Student or general home user | 13-inch, 16GB/512GB | Choose 24GB for heavier multitasking or a longer ownership plan; choose 1TB for a substantial local library. |
| Office user who travels | 13-inch, 16GB/512GB | Move to 24GB/1TB for many simultaneous apps, large files or more headroom. |
| Developer | 13-inch, 24GB/1TB | Choose 32GB for virtual machines, large builds or unusually heavy local workloads; 15-inch suits coding without a desk monitor. |
| Photographer | 13-inch or 15-inch, 24GB/1TB | Prioritize 2TB or more if the active photo library must stay internal; 15-inch helps when editing without an external display. |
| Video editor or 3D creator | 15-inch, 24GB/1TB as a moderate-workload starting point | Use 32GB or larger storage when project demands justify it; frequent sustained exports or effects work may call for a MacBook Pro instead. |
| Local AI user | At least 24GB, with storage sized for models and datasets | Consider 32GB for larger workloads, but verify the specific application’s hardware and memory requirements. |
| Long-term owner | 24GB/1TB in the preferred size | Choose 32GB if the future workload is likely to be memory-intensive; the recommendation is configuration logic, not a guarantee of lifespan. |
Apple offers 16GB, 24GB and 32GB memory options and 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB SSD options in its technical specifications. Live prices vary by configuration and market; check Apple’s purchase page rather than assuming an upgrade price.
When should you consider a MacBook Pro instead?
Choose based on the work, not screen size alone. Frequent long-duration rendering, compiling, simulation, high-end video production or other sustained CPU/GPU tasks are reasons to investigate the current MacBook Pro lineup. Apple’s cited Air specifications do not establish sustained performance under those workloads, and the 15-inch Air’s larger screen and standard 10-core GPU do not by themselves make it a Pro substitute. The same applies if your workflow requires a higher-end professional display or broader connectivity. Compare the current models on Apple’s Mac page before deciding; this guide does not assert a specific Pro model or price.
Buying, trade-in and protection
The announced prices above are U.S. starting and education prices from March 2026. Taxes, retailer discounts, financing, trade-in credit, promotions and regional pricing can change. Apple’s Trade In page provides device-specific estimates; the amount depends on device, condition and current offer. Compare the convenience of trade-in with private-sale proceeds, and follow Apple’s requirements for condition and data removal.
