If your MacBook Air battery is draining faster than expected, first find out whether the cause is active use, an app keeping the Mac awake, or a battery that has lost capacity. Check Battery settings and Activity Monitor, then try low-risk changes such as Low Power Mode, lower brightness, and disconnecting unused accessories. If Battery Health says service is recommended, arrange an assessment rather than expecting settings to restore aged capacity.
First, identify when the battery drains
Notice whether the charge falls quickly during active work, while the Mac is idle, or while it should be asleep. Also note whether the change began after a macOS update or a shift in workload. A single percentage drop is not enough to identify a cause; compare it with the recent usage history in Battery settings.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. Depending on your MacBook Air and macOS version, you may see battery level and screen-on history for recent periods, Battery Health or Condition, and Maximum Capacity. Use the history to put the drain in context: substantial screen-on time and a demanding workload point to a different pattern from a battery falling while the Mac is idle.

Apple does not provide one runtime target that applies to every MacBook Air configuration. Avoid judging your Mac against a universal hours-long promise; model, workload, settings, and battery condition all matter. Apple’s Battery settings guide explains which controls and information may be available, and notes that options vary by Mac.

Check whether an app is using energy or preventing sleep
Open Activity Monitor and select the Energy tab. Compare apps’ Energy Impact values as a relative indicator rather than a precise measure of battery drain. On a laptop, check 12 hr Power as well, if shown; it reflects energy use over that window, not a forecast of remaining battery life.
For drain while idle, look at the Preventing Sleep column. An indication there means an app is keeping the Mac from sleeping, which may help explain why charge falls when you are not actively using it. The Battery status menu may also identify apps using significant energy. These are clues, not proof that an app is faulty or solely responsible: workload and other system activity affect the reading. See Apple’s Activity Monitor guide for what the Energy pane’s fields mean.

Try low-risk settings and usage changes
- Turn on Low Power Mode: In Apple menu > System Settings > Battery, select the available Low Power Mode option. It is intended to reduce energy use and extend battery life; controls and availability can differ by Mac and macOS version. Apple describes its purpose in About Power Modes on your Mac.
- Lower display brightness: Use the brightness controls or the display settings available on your Mac. A brighter screen uses more energy.
- Set the display to turn off when idle: In Battery settings, review the display-off or sleep options shown for your Mac and choose a suitable period of inactivity.
- Quit apps you are not using: Focus on apps that appear to have comparatively high energy use or are preventing sleep, but check whether the pattern persists before drawing conclusions.
- Disconnect unused accessories: Unplug peripherals you do not need while running on battery.
- Keep macOS up to date: Install updates through the software update controls in System Settings.
Apple lists these as general ways to address quick battery drain. Menu names and available settings vary across MacBook Air models and macOS versions, so use the controls shown on your own Mac. See Apple’s quick-drain troubleshooting guidance.
Use Battery Health to decide whether service is needed
In System Settings > Battery, open Battery Health or Condition if it appears. Apple describes battery condition as Normal or Service Recommended; Maximum Capacity, when shown, compares the battery’s capacity with when it was new. A lower capacity can mean less time between charges even if your current apps and settings have not changed.

If the status says service is recommended, consult Apple’s Mac service guidance or an authorized service provider for an assessment. Check your exact MacBook Air model before considering any replacement part; compatibility and seller claims should not be assumed from the product name alone.
Charging optimization and charge limits, if available, manage how the battery charges and can support long-term battery longevity. They are not fixes for rapid discharge during use and do not restore capacity already lost through aging. A settings change can reduce current energy use, but it cannot reverse battery wear.

Match the symptom to the next step
| What you notice | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Charge falls during demanding active use | Recent screen-on history and Energy pane activity | Try Low Power Mode, lower brightness, and quit unnecessary apps. |
| Charge falls while idle or supposedly asleep | Activity Monitor’s Preventing Sleep column; connected accessories | Quit an app keeping the Mac awake and disconnect accessories you do not need. |
| Battery life is shorter across different workloads | Battery Health or Condition and Maximum Capacity, if shown | If service is recommended, seek a service assessment. |
These patterns help choose what to inspect; they do not establish a diagnosis on their own. Use the usage history, Energy pane, and battery condition together.
