MacBook Air Alternatives: Lightweight Laptops for Everyday Use

Looking beyond the MacBook Air? Compare lightweight Windows alternatives by weight, display, configuration, battery claims, ports and compatibility.

If you want a lightweight laptop but do not need macOS, the Dell XPS 13 (2026) is the strongest everyday Windows alternative supported here: Dell lists a starting weight of 2.2 lb and offers LCD and OLED display options. It is not a universal winner, though. Your software, preferred screen, memory needs, ports and budget should determine which model and configuration to choose.

Which MacBook Air alternative should you consider?

This shortlist covers several different priorities rather than pretending every laptop is a like-for-like Air replacement. The XPS 13 is the closest small Windows option in the available evidence; the XPS 14 and ThinkPad X9 15 are larger premium choices, while the Zenbook A14 is a lightweight Windows-on-Arm option. Prices, configurations and availability vary by market, so check the exact version sold where you live.

Model Why consider it Key trade-off or check
Dell XPS 13 (2026) Dell lists a 2.2 lb starting weight and positions it for students and everyday use. Display choices include a 2K LCD non-touch panel or a 3.2K OLED touchscreen. Dell specifications Configurations differ substantially. TechRadar found the 8GB base version slowed in demanding programs and heavier multitasking. TechRadar review guide
Dell XPS 14 (2026) A premium choice if you want more screen and configuration flexibility; RTINGS reports options up to 64GB RAM and a 120Hz OLED touchscreen. RTINGS RTINGS says the MacBook Air offers much longer battery life and maintains performance better in sustained workloads.
ASUS Zenbook A14 A lightweight Windows-on-Arm option. Windows Central describes it as under one kilogram and lists USB4, HDMI, USB-C and USB-A. Windows Central Check compatibility with the applications and peripherals you rely on before buying.
Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025) Consider it if you want a larger 120Hz OLED display, a strong keyboard and touchpad, and more ports. RTINGS RTINGS describes it as more expensive and less portable; it is not a close size match for a small Air.
MacBook Air M5 (13-inch or 15-inch) The baseline if you are open to staying with macOS. Tom’s Guide reported US starting prices of $1,299 for the 13-inch and $1,499 for the 15-inch, and more than 15 hours of battery life in its account. Tom’s Guide, September 18, 2026 Those are reported US prices, not guaranteed current prices; verify the current price and configuration before purchase.

Is the Dell XPS 13 a good everyday MacBook Air substitute?

It is the most directly supported Windows alternative in this selection if portability and ordinary school or home tasks are the priority. Dell lists a 2.2 lb starting weight for the XPS 13 (2026), but that figure is a starting specification, not a promise that every configuration weighs exactly the same. The manufacturer offers a 2K LCD non-touch display or a 3.2K OLED touchscreen; choose based on whether you value touch and OLED contrast or prefer the non-touch LCD option. Dell’s US comparison page lists the current options.

Choose memory for the work you actually do

Dell lists configurations up to 64GB of memory and 4TB SSD storage, but maximum family specifications do not describe the base model. TechRadar’s guide reports that the tested XPS 13’s 8GB base configuration slowed in demanding programs and heavier multitasking. If you routinely keep many browser tabs and applications open, edit media, or use memory-intensive software, do not assume the entry configuration will feel equivalent to a higher-memory version. Confirm the exact memory and storage in the SKU you are considering.

Read battery figures as separate claims

Dell advertises “up to 17 hours of streaming” for the XPS 13. TechRadar reports 16 hours and 17 minutes of video playback in its lab test. These are different conditions and should not be treated as a single guaranteed runtime or directly compared as though they were the same test. Dell’s claim and TechRadar’s test result provide the respective qualifications.

When does a different alternative make more sense?

Choose the XPS 14 for a larger premium Windows laptop

The XPS 14 (2026) is worth considering if you want a larger display and more configuration flexibility than the XPS 13. RTINGS reports that options include up to 64GB RAM and a 120Hz OLED touchscreen. Its comparison also finds the MacBook Air has much longer battery life and better performance retention during sustained workloads, so favor the XPS 14 for its Windows ecosystem or configuration and screen options—not on the assumption that it beats the Air on those two measures. RTINGS’ comparison does not provide a matched battery figure here.

Consider the Zenbook A14 if low weight is central

Windows Central describes the ASUS Zenbook A14 as under one kilogram and lists USB4, HDMI, USB-C and USB-A. That port selection may suit someone who wants to connect a mix of newer and older accessories without relying only on USB-C. The processor platform is Windows on Arm, so check that essential software, drivers and peripherals work as expected before you commit; do not assume every application behaves identically to its version on a conventional Windows laptop. Windows Central’s guide is the source for the model description and ports.

Choose the ThinkPad X9 15 if you value workspace and input feel over compactness

RTINGS describes the 2025 ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition as having a larger 120Hz OLED display, a strong keyboard and touchpad, and more ports. The trade-off is higher cost and lower portability, making it a larger premium alternative rather than a small-laptop substitute. RTINGS’ guide supports those qualitative comparisons; it does not establish a current local price in this shortlist.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Confirm the operating system and software. List the applications, accessories and peripherals you need. If choosing the Zenbook A14, specifically verify Windows-on-Arm compatibility for critical tools and drivers.
  2. Compare the exact configuration. Check memory, SSD capacity, processor and display for the SKU on sale. This matters especially for the XPS 13, whose 8GB base configuration is not equivalent to higher-memory versions.
  3. Match the display to your use. The XPS 13 has a 2K LCD non-touch option and a 3.2K OLED touch option. Check screen size, touch support and refresh rate on any other configuration rather than assuming every model has the headline panel.
  4. Inspect ports against your accessories. Compare the laptop’s physical ports with the monitor, storage, charger and other devices you use. The A14’s listed USB4, HDMI, USB-C and USB-A may reduce adapter needs, depending on your equipment.
  5. Interpret battery claims in context. Look for the test type and conditions. A streaming claim, a lab video-playback result and your own mixed-use day are not interchangeable measures.
  6. Check local price and availability. Compare the same memory, storage and display tier in your market; a starting price or base model is not a fair comparison with a better-equipped alternative.

How should you compare battery life and price?

For a current US baseline, Tom’s Guide reported starting prices of $1,299 for the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 and $1,499 for the 15-inch model in its September 18, 2026 roundup, along with more than 15 hours of battery life in its account. These are reported US figures, not a guarantee of today’s checkout price or a result that can be compared directly with Dell’s streaming claim or TechRadar’s video-playback test. Recheck pricing and configuration locally. Tom’s Guide’s roundup provides that dated report.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
