Macworld and TechRadar favor NordVPN overall, while RTINGS names Mullvad its best-tested Mac VPN. Those are the outlets’ judgments, not results of our own testing. Choose by the job you need the VPN to do: privacy, streaming, or low-latency gaming.
What a VPN does—and what it does not
A VPN encrypts traffic between your Mac and the VPN server, then websites see the server’s public IP address rather than your home connection’s IP. Proton describes the latter plainly: “Websites see the IP address of the VPN server you’re using.” That explanation comes from the provider, not an independent guarantee.

A VPN does not make every website or app activity anonymous. You can still identify yourself by signing in, sharing personal details, or allowing other tracking methods. Treat a VPN as one privacy tool, not a substitute for account security or careful browsing.
Mac VPN shortlist by priority
| VPN | Best fit | What the cited coverage says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | General-purpose use | Macworld and TechRadar select it as an overall Mac pick; PC Gamer also includes it in a gaming guide. | Those rankings do not guarantee it will be best for your Mac, connection, streaming service, or game. |
| Mullvad | Privacy-focused users and latency-sensitive use | RTINGS names it its best-tested Mac VPN and reports strong speed, upload, and latency in its tests. Macworld positions it for privacy and anonymity. | These are publisher assessments and test findings, not universal results. Check current app features and terms. |
| Proton VPN | Users who want a free tier or a paid streaming option | Macworld recognizes its free tier; Proton describes its macOS app and features. | Proton says popular streaming-service access is included only with VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited. Free and paid plans do not have the same feature set. |
| Windscribe | A free Mac option to investigate | RTINGS describes a free Mac option and reports on its account, data, and security characteristics. | Verify the provider’s current free-plan limits and terms before choosing it. |
| ExpressVPN | Streaming and geoblocking use | Macworld highlights it for streaming and geoblocking; TechRadar includes it in its Mac coverage. | Streaming access can change as services detect VPN connections. Current plan terms should be checked. |
Prices and trial terms are omitted because they change frequently. Macworld compares connection limits and trial or refund terms, but confirm the current terms directly before subscribing.

How to choose for your main use
For everyday privacy
Compare the exact macOS app and the evidence behind privacy claims. A provider’s no-logs statement is its own claim; an audit is a separate piece of evidence, and its date and scope matter. RTINGS notes scope caveats in its assessment of Proton VPN, so “audited” should not be read as an unlimited guarantee. Mullvad is RTINGS’ best-tested Mac selection, while Macworld also positions it for privacy and anonymity; those are useful starting points, not proof that any VPN makes browsing anonymous.
For streaming
First check whether the service you want is included in the VPN plan you are considering. Proton says access to popular streaming services requires VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited. Macworld highlights ExpressVPN for streaming and geoblocking, while Macworld and TechRadar include other services in their coverage. A reviewer’s result is not a promise of future access: streaming platforms change how they detect VPNs, and availability can vary by server and plan.

For gaming
Prioritize latency and consistency, not download speed alone. RTINGS reports latency spikes in its Proton testing that could frustrate latency-sensitive use. That finding applies to its test conditions, not every Proton connection or every Mac. A VPN can also add a network hop, so the result depends on the route, server, and game. Before using one to appear to connect from another game region, check that game’s rules: PC Gamer warns that doing so may be a bannable offence.

Check the Mac app, not just the brand name
Mac support and features can differ by operating system version, app, and distribution channel. TechRadar reports on NordVPN’s Mac compatibility, and Proton’s official macOS page describes its app and setup. Before installing, confirm the current macOS requirement and that the specific app offers the safeguards you expect. Do not assume a feature listed for another platform is present in the Mac version.

For any provider, verify the current connection or device limit if you plan to cover several devices. Those limits, operating-system requirements, server availability, and plan features can change.
A practical decision checklist
- Privacy: Separate provider promises from independently assessed evidence; read what an audit covered and when.
- Mac compatibility: Confirm your macOS version is supported and check features in the Mac app itself.
- Streaming: Check the required plan and treat access reports as time-sensitive rather than guaranteed.
- Gaming: Look for low, stable latency, and check game rules before changing your apparent region.
- Value: Compare current device limits and plan terms for your intended use before paying.
Which one should you choose?
Start with NordVPN if you want a general-purpose candidate backed by Macworld and TechRadar’s overall Mac picks. Consider Mullvad if privacy and latency performance are your priorities, while remembering that RTINGS’ test findings are not a promise for every setup. For streaming, check the plan restrictions first; Proton’s popular-service access requires one of its specified paid plans. A free option such as Proton VPN’s free tier or Windscribe may suit basic needs, but do not assume free and paid plans have the same access or features.
