Yes—the Mac Studio with M5 Max is a powerful desktop for photo and video editing, and PetaPixel found it to be its best tested machine in Photoshop and a record-setter in its Premiere Pro tests. That is a strong recommendation for demanding creative work, not proof that every buyer needs the high-end configuration reviewed. PetaPixel tested a 128GB-memory, 4TB-storage model priced at $6,899; Apple’s M5 Max Mac Studio started at $2,499 in the U.S. at launch in September 2026. Those are substantially different configurations.
What PetaPixel tested—and what it did not
In Jeremy Gray’s review, published September 21, 2026, PetaPixel tested a Mac Studio with an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB of unified memory, and a 4TB SSD. PetaPixel listed that configuration at $6,899 and noted that the 4TB SSD option added $1,800 over the 512GB drive. The review also gave $3,499 as the price for a 40-core GPU model with 64GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. These are reviewer-stated configuration prices, not a promise of current pricing. Apple’s U.S. launch announcement gave the new Mac Studio a starting price of $2,499 and said it would be available beginning September 22, 2026. The standard M5 Max GPU has 32 cores; the 40-core GPU is an upgrade. So the PetaPixel review is evidence about a highly configured machine, not a direct test of the least expensive M5 Max model. Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement.
PetaPixel’s verdict was that the M5 Max Mac Studio is “an outstanding desktop computer with extreme capabilities.” The publication rated it 9.5/10 and described it as a likely top overall desktop choice for photographers seeking a Mac Studio below the M5 Ultra tier.

How it performed in photo and video editing
Lightroom Classic
PetaPixel used Puget Systems’ Extended Lightroom Classic benchmark. The workload imports 250 RAW files from the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, Panasonic Lumix S1R II, Sony a1 II, and Nikon Z8; creates 100 Smart Previews; and exports 100 JPEGs and 100 DNGs. The charts report Sony a1 II timings because those files have the highest megapixel count among the four cameras. The benchmark also exercises AI tools including Select Sky, Select Subject, Reflection Removal, Denoise, Enhanced Details, and Super Resolution.
In those results, PetaPixel found the M5 Max Mac Studio nearly as capable as its M3 Ultra comparison system, which had 256GB of unified memory. That is a close result in this benchmark, not evidence that the systems are interchangeable for every large project or workload.

Photoshop and Premiere Pro
PetaPixel called this its best-tested machine in Photoshop and said it set a new record in its Premiere Pro tests. Those findings support the Mac Studio as a serious option for photographers and video editors, but the published results do not establish that the reviewed 128GB/4TB configuration is necessary to achieve strong performance.
DaVinci Resolve and independent benchmark context
PetaPixel cautioned that a change to its DaVinci Resolve benchmark makes comparisons with older Macs unhelpful in its current results. Its comparison pool was incomplete, and it had not benchmarked the base M5 Max Mac Studio. In the available view, the M5 Max nearly matched the publication’s M3 Ultra comparison machine, which had 256GB of memory.

Specifications that matter to creative work
Apple lists the standard M5 Max with an 18-core CPU—six super cores and 12 performance cores—a 32-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine, and 460GB/s memory bandwidth. The configurable 40-core GPU option has 614GB/s memory bandwidth. The Media Engine supports hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, with two video encode engines, two ProRes encode/decode engines, and AV1 decode. M5 Max configurations can be ordered with 48GB, 64GB, or 128GB of memory and SSDs up to 8TB. The right capacity depends on the size of active projects, the apps you use at once, and how much media you want stored internally. PetaPixel specifically notes that memory and storage upgrades are expensive. Consider whether external Thunderbolt storage suits your workflow before paying for a larger internal SSD.

Ports, displays, and what you need to supply
The Mac Studio is a desktop computer, not a complete workstation kit. Apple lists the computer and power cord in the box; a display and any peripherals you need are separate purchases. M5 Max supports up to five external displays. The front has two USB-C ports rated up to 10Gb/s and a UHS-II SDXC card slot. The rear provides four Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple also lists Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. These connections can suit a desk with multiple displays, camera cards, and external drives, but check that the ports match your existing gear.
Are there alternatives?
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Mac mini | Photographers whose work is mainly Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, if a smaller or less costly desktop meets their needs. | PetaPixel says it may be sufficient for some photographers; the evidence here does not establish a specific Mac mini configuration or price for comparison. |
| Discounted M4 Max Mac Studio | Buyers who want a powerful Mac Studio and find a prior-generation model at a good price. | Compare the actual discount and configuration against the M5 Max you would buy; no current discount or inventory is established here. |
| M5 Ultra Mac Studio | People with especially demanding video workloads who need the higher-tier option. | It is a higher performance tier; assess whether your applications and projects benefit enough to justify it. |
| M5 Max MacBook Pro | Editors who need a powerful Mac they can take with them. | A laptop is preferable when portability matters; compare the complete setup you need rather than desktop-only specifications. |
To choose among them, compare the total price of the configuration you need, memory and internal storage capacity, the demands of your video or 3D work, display and peripheral connections, and whether you need portability. Remember that the Mac Studio’s memory and storage are not user-upgradeable in the way some workstation buyers may expect.
Who should buy the M5 Max Mac Studio?
It is a compelling choice for photographers and video editors who want a high-performance Mac desktop and can match the configuration to their workload. The review supports confidence in its performance across named creative tests, while its high-end test unit and costly storage upgrade are reasons not to treat the $6,899 configuration as the default recommendation. Buyers focused on photography may be well served by a less expensive Mac, while the most demanding video users should compare the M5 Ultra and weigh the cost against their actual projects.
