If your Mac feels slow after updating to macOS 27, start with storage, Activity Monitor, app compatibility, and background activity. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the slowdown. Work through the checks below before making disruptive changes or assuming there is a hardware problem.
Check whether the slowdown is system-wide or limited to one app
Notice when the Mac feels slow: during startup, when opening a particular app, while many apps are running, or even when the desktop is idle. If one app is the problem, investigate that app first; a single slow or repeatedly hanging app does not necessarily indicate a system-wide issue. Apple lists limited startup-disk space, high memory demand, incompatible apps, unused open apps, and disk problems among potential causes of a slow Mac. Apple’s slow-Mac guide is a useful reference for these checks.

Free space on the startup disk
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Review the recommendations and identify files you can safely move or remove. Apple recommends moving files to another disk or an external storage device, then deleting files you no longer need from the startup disk.
External storage can help when the startup disk is short on space; it does not automatically make the processor faster or resolve an incompatible app. If you need another drive for files, check that it has enough capacity for your needs and connects to a port on your Mac.

Use Activity Monitor to identify resource-heavy apps
Check CPU activity
Open Activity Monitor and select the CPU tab. It shows system, user, and idle CPU activity. Look for an app you recognize that is consuming resources while the Mac is sluggish. If appropriate, save your work and quit that app normally. Avoid force-quitting unfamiliar system processes. See Apple’s instructions for viewing CPU activity.
Check memory pressure
In Activity Monitor, select Memory and use the Memory Pressure graph and swap information as context. Memory pressure is more useful than simply looking for unused RAM: macOS manages memory, so a low amount of free memory by itself does not mean the Mac needs more or will run faster if apps are closed. If pressure is high, try closing apps or browser tabs you are not using, then see whether the slowdown changes. Apple explains how to check whether your Mac needs more RAM in Activity Monitor.

Activity Monitor refreshes on an interval. Apple notes that making its information update more frequently may itself affect overall system performance, so avoid increasing the update frequency as a general speed fix. Activity Monitor’s update-frequency settings explain the available control.
Investigate an app that is slow or hangs
If the problem consistently occurs in one app, check the app’s system requirements and whether it supports your Mac’s processor and graphics hardware. Update the app if an update is available from its developer, and test whether the slowdown persists when the app is closed. A compatibility or app-specific issue calls for a different response than slowness across the whole Mac.

Review apps running in the background
macOS 27 can indicate when an app continues running in the background after you quit it. Apple notes that background activity can affect performance. To stop a particular app’s background activity, control-click its Dock icon and choose Stop Running in Background. You can also review System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > Background App Activity. Apple describes these options in its guide to apps that continue running in the background after you quit them.
Disable background activity selectively: an app may rely on it for automatic updates or syncing. If the app stops working as expected, turn its background activity back on.

Install available macOS 27 updates
Check Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update for updates available to your Mac. Apple lists macOS 27.0.1 as a bug-fix update and recommends macOS 27 updates for users of that release. Its macOS 27 update notes, published September 28, 2026, say updates improve stability, performance, or compatibility; they do not promise that every slowdown will be fixed. Apple also notes that software updates can affect performance or battery life.
Check the disk if symptoms point to a disk problem
If you suspect a disk issue, use Disk Utility to verify the disk and try to repair it. Apple’s slow-Mac guide recommends this approach for disk problems. If the issue remains after these checks, contact Apple Support or a qualified service provider. Slowness alone is not enough to diagnose hardware failure.
