A Mac portable computer is a Mac laptop: a portable Mac with a built-in display and keyboard. Apple’s current laptop support category includes MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro.
What counts as a Mac portable computer?
“Mac portable computer” is another way to describe a Mac laptop. Apple uses a dedicated Mac Laptop Support category for its laptop families; “portable” is a plain-language distinction, not a technical class with a specified weight or size limit. Apple’s Mac support page also separates laptop guidance from desktop setup.

Not every Mac is a portable computer. Apple’s desktop setup guidance covers iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro separately. A Mac mini, Mac Studio, or Mac Pro is a desktop computer; iMac is also in Apple’s desktop category. Apple’s Mac support page lists these desktop families alongside separate laptop setup guidance.

Why model details matter
Chips vary by model and year
Mac laptops do not all use the same processor. Apple’s list of Macs with Apple silicon identifies coverage by model and introduction year. Apple says the transition from Intel processors began with certain Mac models introduced in late 2020; that does not mean every older MacBook has Apple silicon. Apple’s Apple silicon overview describes the model-specific coverage.
Ports, charging, and accessories vary
Charging depends on the Mac laptop model: Apple documents USB-C and MagSafe options, including MagSafe 3 on applicable models. It recommends checking the wattage and cable requirements for the specific computer. A USB-C or Thunderbolt display that supplies power can also charge a Mac. Apple’s charging guide gives model-family and year details.
