If OBS is sending the video to YouTube, OBS must stay open and actively streaming. Quitting OBS stops its encoder from sending content, so YouTube may take the stream offline. Minimize or hide OBS if you want to clear your desktop; do not quit it. Closing YouTube’s compact Live Control Panel is a separate action and does not, by itself, mean OBS has stopped streaming.
First, identify what “closes” means
These actions can look similar but have different effects. Check which one happened before changing settings:

- OBS was quit: If it was the encoder, its outgoing feed stopped. Restart OBS, start streaming again, and leave the app running.
- OBS was minimized or hidden: The window is out of sight, but the application can continue encoding. Check OBS’s streaming status and YouTube’s incoming feed.
- YouTube’s compact Live Control Panel was closed: That panel is separate from OBS. YouTube documents closing the compact panel by exiting its window; check whether OBS is still streaming and YouTube is still receiving the feed.
- OBS crashed or disappeared unexpectedly: This is not the same as deliberately quitting. Collect the OBS log and macOS crash report before changing encoder settings.
YouTube’s encoder guidance puts the key distinction plainly: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder setup instructions also explain that the encoder sends the feed using a server URL and stream key.

Keep an OBS-based stream live on a Mac mini
- Open OBS and select the scene and sources you intend to broadcast.
- Confirm that OBS is configured for the correct YouTube stream and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream keys and the encoder connection details.
- Start streaming in OBS. Verify that OBS reports an active stream and that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed.
- Leave OBS running for as long as it is the encoder. Minimize or hide its window if you do not want it on screen; do not use Quit or Command-Q.
YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop options affect how a stream can be started or stopped from the encoder. They do not keep OBS encoding after the application is quit. See YouTube’s live stream settings for the available controls.

If OBS is open but YouTube has no feed
Do not assume quitting OBS is the cause if the application is still running. Compare the status in OBS with the stream state in YouTube Live Control Room, then check the OBS log for connection errors or a change in streaming status. YouTube distinguishes starting and ending a stream through the encoder and Live Control Room; the event state and the incoming feed are related but not identical.
- OBS says it is not streaming: Start the stream again and confirm the selected YouTube destination and stream key.
- OBS says it is streaming but YouTube shows no incoming feed: Check the OBS log and connection status, then inspect the event in Live Control Room. Treat this as a possible connection or event-state issue rather than changing settings at random.
- The YouTube event appears ended: Check the event state and encoder controls in Live Control Room before attempting to resume or create another event.
If OBS crashed or the stream stopped unexpectedly
Record what happened and collect the OBS log and macOS crash report. The fact that the computer is a Mac mini does not establish a Mac mini-specific fault, and a crash report or log is needed to narrow down the cause. Do not assume that changing the encoder will fix a crash without evidence from the logs.

- MINI DESKTOP COMPUTER WITH TRIPLE DISPLAY SCREEN - Nucbox G10 integrates AMD Radeon Vega 8 1200 MHz GPU to deliver powerful graphics processing power to easily handle video editing, and playback, or casual gaming. And it can connect to 3 display screens simultaneously via HDMI 2.1 TMDS/ DPv1.4/ TYPE-C.
OBS lists Intel and Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 Big Sur or later in its system requirements, while cautioning that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee successful streaming or recording under every workload. Its macOS compatibility table changes with OBS releases, so check the current table against your macOS and installed OBS version rather than relying on an older version number.
OBS also documents Apple VideoToolbox hardware encoding on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, including H.264 streaming support on Apple Silicon. Encoder selection may affect performance, but it does not remove the basic requirement for the active encoder application or process to keep running. See OBS’s hardware encoding documentation.

When a separate encoder makes sense
If you need to quit OBS while the broadcast continues, another encoder must take over and keep sending a feed. A dedicated hardware encoder is one possible approach, but it is not required for the ordinary fix of leaving OBS open. Before choosing hardware, check YouTube compatibility, supported inputs, resolution and frame rate, encoding formats, connection requirements, and whether the device can operate without a host computer. YouTube discusses encoder choices in its live streaming tips; the sources cited here do not establish compatibility for any particular model.
