YouTube specifies encoder and stream settings, while OBS warns that compatibility alone does not guarantee a workload will run successfully. Choose memory for the complexity of your scenes and apps, and storage according to whether you record locally—not simply because you stream live.
Is there a minimum Mac mini RAM or storage requirement?
No universal minimum is established by Apple, YouTube, or OBS for 24/7 YouTube streaming. YouTube’s encoder recommendations describe video output settings; they do not prescribe computer memory or disk capacity. OBS says performance needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully.

That makes the actual workload the useful basis for a decision: a simple scene with one video source is different from a scene with animated overlays, browser sources, capture devices, local recording, and several other apps open. Treat additional memory as headroom for a heavier workload, not as a YouTube requirement. OBS’s macOS requirements and workload caveat are documented at OBS System Requirements.

Current Mac mini configurations to consider
Apple’s current 2026 Mac mini specifications list M6 and M5 Pro configurations. These are available product configurations, not validated 24/7 streaming recommendations.

| Model tier | Unified memory | Built-in SSD | What that means for a streaming setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 | 16GB starting; configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB starting; configurable to 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB | The base configuration is an available starting point, not a documented minimum. Consider more memory if your actual scene and concurrent apps need headroom; choose SSD capacity based on local media and recording. |
| M5 Pro | 24GB starting; configurations up to 48GB or 64GB | 512GB starting; configurations up to 8TB | Offers higher listed memory and storage options. The specifications do not establish that Pro is necessary for a 24/7 stream. |
Apple lists hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW encoding support for the current lineup. Check Apple’s current Mac mini technical specifications for the configuration details before buying.
If you own a 2024 Mac mini
Do not apply the newer lineup’s starting configuration to an older model. Apple lists the 2024 M4 with 16GB unified memory, configurable to 24GB or 32GB, and a 256GB SSD with larger options. M4 Pro starts at 24GB memory and 512GB SSD, also with larger options. Apple lists hardware video encode engines for both chips. See Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications.

How much RAM should you choose?
Start with the scene you will actually run, rather than a supposed universal figure. A relatively simple stream scene and few open apps place different demands on the computer than multiple animated sources, browser overlays, capture devices, and simultaneous local recording. If you edit video or keep other demanding apps open while streaming, include those in the workload you evaluate.
- Use OBS’s Apple Silicon VideoToolbox hardware-encoding support where appropriate; OBS documents streaming support with H.264 on Apple Silicon. This is encoder support, not a guarantee of uninterrupted performance for a particular setup. See OBS Hardware Encoding.
- Build and test the exact OBS scene, output resolution, frame rate, and encoder you intend to use.
- During testing, watch OBS performance and YouTube stream health. If the system struggles, simplify sources or reduce the output workload before deciding that a higher memory configuration is the only remedy.
Apple’s memory options help define what you can buy, but neither Apple’s specifications nor YouTube’s encoder guidance set a 24/7 OBS RAM target.

How much storage do you need?
Sending a live stream to YouTube does not, by itself, establish a required internal SSD size. The key distinction is whether you also save recordings or retain large source files on the Mac mini.
- Streaming without local recording: choose capacity for macOS, OBS, applications, and the media files you keep locally. A larger SSD is not a stated requirement just to send a live stream.
- Recording every stream locally: estimate space from the recording bitrate and how long you retain each recording, then leave additional room for the operating system, apps, and other files. The right amount depends on your chosen recording settings and retention period.
- Keeping substantial source media: include those files in your capacity plan. An external SSD can be useful for this conditional workflow, but it does not add unified memory.
YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe local disk capacity. Apple lists the built-in SSD options for the current Mac mini and the 2024 model.

Set up and test the stream profile
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube gives 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. These are encoder-output recommendations—not RAM or storage requirements. Confirm the current values and other codec-specific guidance in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Match the encoder settings to YouTube guidance. For the relevant RTMP/RTMPS profile, use CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval; set bitrate according to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Use the stream key from YouTube’s live-stream setup in OBS’s streaming configuration. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Test with representative content. Include the expected audio and motion, and run a test before relying on the setup for a long session.
- Monitor stream health. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS while testing and during operation so you can identify output or connection problems.
What 24/7 operation does—and does not—mean
A Mac mini can be configured for an always-on streaming workflow, but the official sources cited here do not guarantee that a specific configuration will remain online continuously, nor do they document a Mac mini and OBS setup proven in a full 24/7 endurance test. Before depending on it, test your own scene for a representative duration and plan for stable networking, power continuity, and recovery after a restart or interruption.
