There is no defensible single break-even figure yet. Apple’s Mac mini M4 launched in India at ₹59,900 for the base model in October 2024, but that is a historical launch price—not a verified current price. Cloud costs depend on whether you mean renting a remote computer to run OBS or paying a service to ingest and deliver a stream. Compare current, like-for-like prices and your actual hours before deciding.
For Indian YouTube creators, the key distinction is that a Mac mini is a computer you own, a cloud workstation is rented computing time, and a managed video service bills for streaming infrastructure. Those options solve different problems and should not be compared as if they were interchangeable.

What did the Mac mini M4 cost in India?
Apple announced the M4 Mac mini on 29 October 2024, with a starting price of ₹59,900 in India and an education price of ₹49,900. The base model included 16GB of unified memory, a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. Those figures are launch details, not a statement of the M4’s current selling price. Apple’s 2024 announcement described it as a compact computer for creative work, including video editing.

Apple’s India newsroom says the newer Mac mini generation, with M6 and M5 Pro systems, became available on 22 September 2026. Their starting prices were ₹99,900 and ₹209,900 respectively. That makes it especially important not to present the M4’s launch price as today’s price. If you find an M4 listing, check the seller, whether it is new or refurbished, RAM and SSD configuration, warranty, and the date of the offer. Apple’s 2026 India announcement gives the newer models and launch prices.

What the M4 can—and cannot—tell you about streaming
Apple’s M4 technical sheet lists hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW encoding and decoding. It lists AV1 decoding separately; it does not list AV1 encoding. In other words, AV1 playback support should not be read as proof that the M4 can encode an AV1 livestream. The specifications describe media-engine support, not independent OBS performance measurements. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications also list 16GB unified memory in the base configuration, configurable to 24GB or 32GB, and a 256GB SSD configurable to 512GB, 1TB or 2TB.
For a creator, the M4’s media engine is relevant to editing and encoding workflows, but it does not settle whether buying it is cheaper than renting a cloud machine. That depends on the software, resolution, encoding settings, session length, and how much of the computer’s time you will actually use.
Two different meanings of cloud streaming cost
Renting a cloud workstation
A cloud workstation is a remote computer that you access over the internet. You can install or run creator software such as OBS, editing applications, or rendering tools on it. AWS describes its G4 instances as options for remote graphics workstations and game streaming; G4dn uses NVIDIA T4 GPUs and G4ad uses AMD Radeon Pro V520 GPUs. AWS’s displayed G4 prices are for US East (Northern Virginia), so they are not India-local quotes. AWS’s G4 instance page describes the instance family.

These provider rates were listed in DigitalOcean’s Paperspace documentation, accessed in 2026; rates and availability can change. They do not establish an India-local, OBS-ready quote. Storage, data transfer, desktop software, taxes, currency conversion, and billed idle or reserved time can change the total. Check the current region, machine configuration and billing terms before estimating your own bill. DigitalOcean Paperspace pricing lists the rates.
A rented machine also introduces practical costs that a simple hourly figure misses: you need a reliable internet connection to control the remote desktop; latency affects how responsive it feels; and project files must be placed on or transferred to the machine. Confirm how sessions persist and whether a stopped, idle or reserved instance continues to incur charges. The cited pricing does not establish the performance of a specific cloud setup running OBS against the M4 on a particular creator workload.
Paying for stream ingest and viewer delivery
A managed live-video service is not a cloud desktop. It ingests and processes a stream, then delivers it to viewers under its own billing model. AWS IVS, for example, bills live input by stream duration and channel type, with viewer output billed separately according to delivery resolution and region. Input charges apply even when nobody watches. AWS IVS pricing describes those separate charge categories.
AWS gives an example of approximately $69 for a one-hour event at 540p with about 1,000 viewers: $1.76 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution of 791 GB. AWS says the illustration uses US East (N. Virginia) and default assumptions, and actual costs may be higher or lower. It is an AWS managed-delivery example—not a cloud OBS desktop quote, an India estimate, or a YouTube creator’s bill. Do not use it as a like-for-like comparison with a Mac mini purchase.

How to make a fair Mac-versus-cloud comparison
Start by writing down the workload you need to pay for. Editing, rendering, running OBS around the clock, and delivering a stream to viewers may require different services. Then compare costs over the same period and include the real configuration and usage.
- Verify the hardware price. Find a current M4 listing and record whether it is new or refurbished, its RAM and SSD, warranty, and seller. Treat ₹59,900 only as Apple’s October 2024 base-model launch price, not a current offer.
- Choose the right cloud category. For a remote machine running OBS or editing software, use a workstation rate. For a service that ingests and delivers video to viewers, use that service’s input and output charges. Do not substitute one category’s price for the other.
- Estimate actual billed hours. Multiply the current hourly machine rate by the hours you expect to run it, including billed idle time or reserved capacity. For a managed video service, estimate stream duration and expected audience delivery under the provider’s own rate structure.
- Add storage and transfer. Check the charge for keeping footage and project files in the cloud and moving them to or from the machine. Include any software charges, applicable taxes and currency conversion.
- Account for region and network. Check the provider’s available location and rate, your connection to that location, remote-desktop latency, and upload reliability. A US-region list price is not an India-specific total.
- Compare over your ownership horizon. Use the same period for the computer and cloud option. State assumptions about resale, financing, electricity, display and peripherals, and maintenance rather than silently treating them as zero.
A limited machine-cost calculation is purchase price divided by hourly cloud machine rate. It gives a rough number of rental hours equal to that purchase amount; it is not a total-cost-of-ownership break-even. A useful numeric comparison needs a current M4 price and a comparable cloud desktop configuration, region and bill, plus the creator’s real working hours and add-on costs. Without those matched inputs, a precise break-even number would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.

- Are you buying computing or streaming delivery? A cloud workstation runs software; a managed video service charges for ingest and viewer delivery. A YouTube channel’s own streaming setup is a separate consideration.
- Will the machine be used beyond streaming? If you also edit, render, or do other creative work locally, compare the value of owning a general-purpose computer—not just its cost as a stream encoder.
