Deleting a Mac app does not necessarily delete its documents or other files. If you want to check for leftovers, inspect these eight locations—but treat them as possible places to look, not a promise that every app uses all of them. Quit the app, check for its developer’s uninstaller, and keep anything you cannot confidently identify.
Before checking Library folders
- Quit the app. Apple says to quit an open app before uninstalling it. Follow Apple’s current instructions for deleting apps from a Mac and check whether a non-Apple app includes its own uninstaller.
- Uninstall it using the method appropriate to how it was installed. A developer’s uninstaller may handle helpers or other components that dragging the app to the Trash does not. Manually deleting a folder is not proof that every component has been removed.
- Inspect only if you want to find remaining data. Search using the app’s exact name and, if you know it, its developer or bundle identifier. A matching name is a clue, not proof that a file belongs to that app.
- Review each match before deleting anything. App-created documents and other files can remain after the app is deleted, and some may need the app to open them. Preserve projects, databases, libraries, and anything whose purpose is unclear.
The paths below start with ~, which means your home folder. They refer to the current user’s Library, not an exhaustive inventory of every place an app might put files. Apple notes that sandboxing changes where standard app directories resolve; system-wide Library locations or other paths may also be involved. Eight Library locations to inspect
These folders have different roles and different risks. The list is an inspection checklist, not a set of folders that every deleted app will leave behind.

Apple’s Library reference also describes the purposes of Library subfolders. The list above combines those documented roles with locations suggested by a third-party checklist; in particular, treat Saved Application State and HTTPStorages as suggestions to inspect, not as Apple-backed universal cleanup targets.

Decide what to keep
- Keep user-created or shared material unless you know it is backed up and no longer needed. Application Support and containers can hold more than disposable settings.
- Be especially cautious with shared group data. A related app or component may still rely on it.
- Consider caches separately. Apple describes them as recreatable, so an identified app cache is usually a lower-risk candidate than a project or database. The app may need to regenerate it.
- Treat preferences as settings, not leftovers that must be removed. Deleting an identified preference file can reset configuration.
- Back up important data first. If ownership or purpose is uncertain, leave the file in place rather than guessing.
There is no single reliable filename-matching rule established here: names, developers, and bundle identifiers can help narrow a search, but they do not establish ownership by themselves. Apple’s central caution is practical: deleting an app does not necessarily delete documents and other files it created, and those files may require the app to open them.
